He're something in the gee, whizz! department :
I swaped out p2 350, and put in a amd tbird. ( just changed the MB and
CPU)
After I got it booting right, I hooked up the hdd, and rebooted. the
familiar lilo boot prompt greeted me ( rh 6.0, w98 and w2k were on the hdd,
from when I was using the P2 ). Chose linux, and I was at run level 3, as
usual, network was up and running. Logged in, and got into X .
Yup, definitely faster. Enabled dma transfers on the CD, and proceeded to
play mp3's while I downloaded windows drivers for the video cards.
Time to get operational : How long does it take to boot ? :)
Unfortunately , I can't say the same about windows.

I use a Iwill db100 motherboard with 2 ata disks in RAID-1 (hda / hdc)
My kernel is 2.2.13.
After 2 months of nice activity, my server output a lot of errors about
my /dev/hdc disk and it stoped working. I desactivated RAID and reboot
my server using only /dev/hda and no longer /dev/hdc
Now at boot-time I don't even see my /dev/hdc drive :
before :
PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hda: ST320430A, ATA DISK drive
hdc: ST320430A, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
after (or now):
PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
hda: ST320430A, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
So no more hdc, nor ide1...
Maybe it's a bios problem, but i cannot guess because my server is
remote and i don't have access to it.
did someone face it before ? is there anyway to "reset ide1" (with
hdparm or i don't know what).
Can I try to pass to the kernel via lilo the old settings of ide1 ?
any idea welcome
thanks,
jerome

as/400 drives have 520 byte sectors. you should be able to low level
format it from the scsi bios thing and make it work, or ask in
comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware for 520to512.exe.

I have a Dell Precision 420 dual CPU system, and I am trying to figure
out why a Qlogic QLA2202F dual channel Fibre Channel adapter only interrupts
correctly in the PCI slot immediately adjacent to the AGP slot. In all of
the other PCI slots, only the second channel is able to interrupt Linux
(2.2.16 SMP kernel) correctly. I've asked Dell for some details on the
interrupt routing for this system, but was wondering if anyone else had
run into similar problems and found a solution.
Note that the QLA2202F works fine in a Dell Dimension XPS 333 system.

Subject: Improve Rotational Delay of HDD with Software Only
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 01:01:44 +0900
My English is poor. sorry.
I invented a software technique that improves rotational delay of HDD (only
at reading).
This technique makes HDD's rotational delay time half (only at reading). It
needs no additional hardware. Load for CPU and memory is little.
I think it's a nice idea, for...
o It makes low rotation-speed HDD very faster.
o Low rotation-speed HDD has low power consumption.
o At notebook PC, faster system and longer battery-life becomes available.
And, at server or workstation, this technique will improve cost-performance
if the load for HDD is mainly read.
But this technique is experimental phase yet. The experimental
implementation works well, but a lot of work is needed for practical use.
If you feel some interest about this technique, please visit here.

Has any got a Adaptec AHA2944UW differential SCSI adapter working with
redhat 6.1?
I am trying to connect an IBM 2105 (Shark) disk subsystem but with
little luck.
The PC BIOS can see the adapter and the adapter BIOS can see the disks
but linux can't.

Since the program you wrote is design for WINDOWS 2000 only.. Why bother
post it in LINUX's news groups?

I have a new Socket A Athalon motherboard with a VIA chipset with
intergrated SoundBlaster Pro compatable 'sound card'. I run it on
WinDowZZ 98 with no problems, (So I can play Tomb Raider!!). I have just
installed SuSe 6.4 and have loaded the module drivers OK as I see them
when I do my cat /dev/sndstat, but I cannot get any 'noise' out of them.
I have selected the SoundBlaster Pro support in the modules.conf, but
this is for a specific SoundBlaster sound chip, xx3070 or similar.
Any pointers?

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario 1685 with a synaptics touchpad.
It has a kernel hack as it jumps and false clicks and
basically doesn't work straight outta the box.
I read that the Synaptics Touchpad now *does* work
flawlessly using the latest kernel 2.2.16
Has anyone confirmed this? I have not had a chance to
patch the new kernel yet. If 2.2.16 does 'fix' the
touchpad it will solve a huge problem for Presario users.

Once you make a connection, enter this into a command line:
ping 141.211.125.17
If you get pings back, your connection is OK, and you merely need to
set up your DNS servers. There's a place in kppp where you can enter
the DNS numbers manually: Setup->Accounts->Edit->DNS . Your ISP knows
its own DNS numbers (or it *should*, anyway) so call them up and find
out what they are.

Not enough info -- how are you determining that Linux can't see the
disks? Is the aic7xxx module being loaded? What are the outputs of:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
cat /proc/scsi/aic7xxx/0

AMD's new chips are all coming out for Socket A. Slot A is in the
process of being phased out.
In terms of performance, I don't think it will matter much.
If you get a good deal on a Slot-A board/CPU go for it. But don't
expect to be upgrading your CPU on that board. The Thunderbird and
Duron are both Socket-A packages.

1. I changed from a P200 to a K6-3 400 on my old machine. Not a single
problem, lots of extra speed.
2. I took the hard drive over to my new (as of last November) Athlon 600.
No problems, lots of extra speed. Compiled at least two kernel upgrades
over the time, no problems, lots of speed.
Problems with AMD:
1. You'll sit tilted to the right. That's from the thickness of all that
extra money in the wallet in your left hip pocket.
2. You won't be sending an Intel unique CPU identifier to anyone who has
the hack and asks for it.
3. You'll just have to put up with the extra speed. Poor you.
