actually, this motherboard comes with a RAID controller on the board. IIRC,
an HPT370(??). the board costs about $250-300. basically, i am deciding
between this board and the ASUS A7V, both KT133 chipset for the socket A
Athlon. The RAID controller seemed like a very nice addition, so I was just
checking out whether it is worth it or not.

so, basically, as far as linux and the installer are concerned, i will have
only one drive? this doesn't mess with partitioning? does this have any
implications for dual booting?
thanks for your help.

Subject: I need help from a Monitor /Video Linux Guru
Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 09:36:06 -0400
Ok, I am a newbie at this, however, I have gotten the program installed but
I am not happy with the results. Here is the problem. I have an old US
Logic Monitor, 14 inch, and an ATI Rage 128 Xpert AGP video card. As I was
going through the installation the program suggested that I use a Generic
Monitor since mine was not on the list. I went out to the internet to see
if I could pull up any info on my Monitor and Here is what I found:
US Logic
Model: MM400
Max Resolution: 14 SVGA x 1024
Sync Type: Not Available
H Freq/V Freq: 768/30.1/37.9/40/48.3
Tube: Not Available
Monitor Type: 14
How do I go about changing the H Freq and V Freq on the monitor, I am not
sure how to enter the numbers. The main problem that I am having is that
when I get into Gnome, I have to manually change scroll the window up and
down using the buttons on my monitor, the screen size is 640 x 480 and I
would really like 800 x 600. In windows, I have it set to 800 x 600 32 bit
color. However, in Linux when I try and set it to this I am getting the
black screen of death and then have to reboot the computer.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Gretchen

Subject: ST01/02 Driver for RH
Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 10:07:39 -0700
Hi -
I'm looking for a driver for the ISA SCSI controller. This is an embedded
controller in Compaq Proliant 4500 servers. Although not directly supported
by Compaq or RH, the chipset appears to be ST01. Compaq calls this a 2/e
scsi controller, not to be confused with the SMART 2 series of controllers,
which already have kernel support (2.2.16 anyways, probably others).
http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html lists the ST01 as
supported which is good news I think, if I cold only find the driver.
It also seems to have support from the *BSD Unices.
So the problem is my *.iso CD doesn't boot, but other OS's will boot from
CD. I can create a boot.img, and boot, but the install can't find the CDROM
which is on the 2/e controller.
Does anyone know where I can find this driver, or what the linux src file is
called ?
Thanks for reading this far (if you did)

Nothing. Just install the driver, add the appropriate alias for eth0 to
conf.modules, and there you are.
I don't know offhand (i.e. without looking) which driver supports the
chip on this card. You have the card. Look at its chip, then check the
driver sources for their comments about which chips they support.
Compile install and configure the appropriate driver ...

It is an Onstream tape drive. I have a second Linux machine that
recognizes it everytime, but the one machine I want to use as an
enterprise backup machine does not see it. Everytime I reboot the second
machine that does see it, Kudzu will bring up the menu to add it if I
just plugged it in, or remove it is disconnected, but the first machine
will not. The adaptec card does see it and enumerates it.

Your using a SCSI tape, but the kernel loads an emulation driver for
tapes connected to the IDE interface. Could this be the starting point
for further investigations? :-)

Why not go for a PCI ISDN card, like an ASUS or AVM Fritz. They are
capable of channel bonding and give you 128K access without the need of
an additional serial card and are much cheaper: you should be able to
get them for less than 50.

It's supposed to be the Tulip driver, which I already have compiled
into my kernel. It was working with the previous Linksys LNE100TX card

the old Linksys cards. I have almost the same situation, with a mix of
the old and new Linksys LNE100TX cards. I had to get and install the
latest tulip driver to get the new cards to work. The new driver works
fine with the older Linksys cards, too.

ok, so '-u1 -c3 -m16' are adequate parameters?
no errors and stable, right?
(I have an ATA-100 running on VIA ATA-66 onboard controller)
There seems to be much ambiguity as to the hdparm settings...

I have a "Plustek FBIII" ecp scanner that works well in windows.
However, I am trying to get away from windows and want to set it up in
linux. How do I do that; are there any programs that interface the
scanner and the os?

Okay, how do I do it? It appears that cdrecord only wants to use 650 or
5something MB media. Is there an alternative to cdrecord to copy or
master on an 80 min, 700MB cd?

Subject: Dual Head FB with ATI cards

I have a slightly different problem but the subject nearly fits mine.
My Setup:
I am trying to get 2 ATI Charger 3D cards (Mach64) chipset to run
with a vanilla 2.2.16. I have an ATX Board with VIA chipset and 3 PCI
slots. Currently I have plugged the Chargers into slots 1
(0:8:0) and 3 (0:10:0). In-between is a network interface card.
(I also tried each card alone as 0:8:0, worked; as well as
0:9:0/0:10:0 which did not, see below).
None of the hardware components have been extensivley
used before, the cards are completely unused.
Since using different settings for vesafb and atyfb respectively
did not work I currently am having removed all "video..."
kernel appends.
The Error:
First of all, my PC seems not to recognize one of the cards as
suitable for being primary VGA interface. It's always the same
card being refused (I tried different configurations, see above).
This card performed normal when plugged in without the other card.
The screen atached to this card (which is currently 0:8:0) remains
dark and the system comes up on the second head.
Now I go into linux-2.2.16 via LILO.
The first head get initialized as second framebuffer device but
is displaying garbage only. /dev/tty1 is being mapped onto
the (working) head 0:10:0. Mode changes onto /dev/fb0 (default
fbdev) are accepted and executed. /devv/tty2 and 3 are being
mapped onto the second head (why?). The stuff that head
displays is unreadable (see below).
Diagnostics:
The malfunctioning head reacts to mode changes performed by XFree.
(Version is 4.01 configured for Xinerama). It still displays garbage
but different-looking one ;-)
In console I get long vertical lines in green and yellow - about
10 pixels apart (guessed). There are also problems with image
synchronistation (small, fast waves of distortion).
The image displayed begins to flash (blink) heavily when
modifying areas by moving a window.
Question:
How can I fix this? I really do not want to buy an expensive
AGP card since I only do text-processing and some 2D graphics
at this box.
Greetings,
Tilman.

Ok, I found the executable (with FTPSearch). No matter did I boot with
dos 7 or dos 3.3 floppy it says "Generic SCSI CBios is required to run
this program" and exits. Well, I know I have the controllers bios enabled,
so this left me empty handed.
However, looking at dmesg, I notice the text "SCSI device sda: hdwr
sector= 512 bytes." To me it seems that the AHA-2940 bios did change the
sector size during low level format. Right?
