Hi Greg,

it looks like you have unsupported scanner as it is not in the list of
supported scanners

Thanks

That solved the problem I've upgraded the BIOS to the
TY version.

I am having difficulty configuring an HP 4050N printer to work with
Mandrake 7.1.

The printer is hooked into the ether through an HP JetDirect card. I
can telnet to the printer and have also determined that it uses the
HP Laserjet 4 print filter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah. IDE RAID. 0, 1, and 0/1.

Yes, that's plausible, now.

In short: it isn't. Look up the specifications for RAID0, 1, and 0/1
(which are three types the controller offers) sometime. For an IDE
array, this makes sense, as you can probably still only have four
devices on the bus. The best kind of RAID for most setups is RAID5:
it offers the biggest bang for your buck. It really shines best when
you get far more than the minimum three drives, though, and it also
requires (probably) the most advanced circuitry.

But anyway, I digress a little. For your purposes, you're probably
better off using software RAID.

If this board's RAID controller functions similarly to a SCSI RAID
controller, yes.

> this doesn't mess with partitioning?

No.

Yes. Both OSes have to have drivers for the RAID controller.

I'll add in another factor -speed.

On a machine where the CPU is not being used for other tasks, SW RAID is
as fast as HW RAID. However, that's rarely the case. On a machine with
other applications eating up large chunks of CPU time, then the RAID
processes have to fight for CPU time, and things run slow. With IDE drives,
it's even slower, as the CPU is utilized much, much more than with SCSI
drives.

So, if the machine is going to do nothing but be a file server, software
RAID is going to be fast. If it's going to be a database server, doing lots
of I/O *and* having the CPU maxed out by the database, then it's going to be
slow. I've seen it happen. ; )

We just finished setting up some higher-powered servers, and went with
hardware RAID in both of them. We found some used AMI Enterprise 1200's for
$125 each, and some 9.1 gig hot-swappable drives for $130 each. All in all,
the arrays are fast, stable, and most of all, redundant. The RAID 5
checksum routines are done on the card, not the CPU, freeing it for database
work, and the hot-spares are utilized and rebuilt on-the-fly, with no reboot
or downtime.

Requiring a flash when the inevitable bugs are found, and restricting
the program to real mode.

No thanks.

I had a similar problem with my SB16, songs would play very fast. I'm
not sure what caused it but I downloaded the source for XMMS and mpg123
and recompiled them for my 686. And I'm not sure if this makes sense
but it sounds like a good reason for this, but maybe it has to do with
the software being compiled on a 386?

I think I have that same HCF card, but anyway opening your case will
most likely not void your warranty, just take out the HCF card, see if
the sound program will detect the other one and if it does just setup
the non-HCF card and replace the HCF card back into it's PCI SLot

I remember having used the Crystal driver to make a Yamaha (YMF718 I
think.. can't remember now) work...Seems like they are compatible at the
register level... But I might have been lucky! :)

What I did was to boot into Windows95/98 and jot down the IO and IRQ info
for the card. Then used this info to build the crystal CS4232 driver (into
the kernel)....
Worked pretty well (Still works!)
I did have to do a little experimenting though.. mainly with the DMA
settings...

Oh Yeah!

Are you using SuSE?

I am. I've been using SuSE since 5.x

I'm posting from a SuSE 6.4 2.2.14 kernel, i586 with 3DNow activated.
;-)

You CAN choose the kernel option from YaST2 during installation.

Only sucky-crappy distros like RH, Debian, etc. , and so on you need to
recompile for anything other than the generic stuff.

Even soundcard, SMP, pentium, ata/dma a bunch of scsi, GForce video, etc
runs right out of the box without any messing around.

My aic7xxx module does not load.

The only subdirectory under /proc/scsi is "scsi"

"dmesg | grep scsi " returns the following:

As an added kicker, when I boot the same machine using a FreeBSD 3.4
