Hi y'all.
I've picked up a GUS classic with no docs. Can't find much about on the web
re: jumper settings, etc.
Can anyone who's set on up walk me through jumpber settings and any params
you have to feed the kernel (module) about it?

Cheers

I suspect the usual cable or termination problems. My Initio card
works fine with my CD burner, and did not require any changes from the
default BIOS settings, other than termination.

Linux is well known for finding hardware faults that Windows hides.

Make sure that you are using short, high quality cables. Terminate
both ends of the bus. Use an active terminator. My scanner caused
problems until I pitched the cable and passive terminator that came
with it. It was OK if only the scanner was connected, but not if
anything else was connected. A better cable fixed that.

Nice response; even better attitude. People ask for help on this forum, they
don't ask to be ticked off. Sure, he should have backed up (I'm sure that he
won't forget to do *that* in a hurry again) but I fail to see the need for a
response like that.

Have a nice day.

With RedHat, I strongly suscpet that he just needs to load the ide-scsi
module and that a kernel compile is not necessary unless he has
compiled his own monolithic kernel in the past.

It seems happy enough with my writer running as hdb

No, I don't think that he needs to muck around with his fstab to
in that way. This is my fstab, and cd recording works just fine.

Hello,

I came into a similar problem when I tried to set up my sound card. I
recommend that you download a program called ISAPnP Tools. It is
available at www.freshmeat.net, or any other Linux download site. Just
download the file (in .tar.gz format), use tar to extract, and follow the
instructions indicated in the readme file.

Hope this helps.

Maybe it is their first experience with linux. Maybe they are just sick
of using an operating system that falls apart when its web browser crashes.
There are as many reasons for starting with a stock distribution of linux
and keeping it relatively simple at first as there are disgruntled
Microsoft Windows users.

If you have an interest in Linux becoming truly mainstream, then this
attitude is really counterproductive.

100% stable and no errors on my system. The VIA chipset should support this

The above was from me. Well, I actually found the file to edit to use the
ljet4d driver. I guess that I really should do more research before asking
for help. Printtool apparently doesn't support Ghostscript's ljet4d DEVICE
option, but I can use it by editting the postscript.cfg file in the correct
/var/spool/lpd/lp? subdirectory.

Sorry to have bothered ya'll. But I'll probably be back with more stupid
questions. If you wondered about the weird address in the previous post,
I was messing around with my ".slrnrc" file to munge my email address and
I really messed it up. Hopefully, I have munged it more reasonably now.

That's what you get for using an internal modem.

If the modem gets stuck in such a state, sending any init string will
show no effect at all.

Junk it. Internal modems are a pain, and the problem you're encountering
is one of the more serious reasons against using them. Buy a nice
external modem that you may simply switch off/on again in case it gets
stuck.

Let's see ... I don't know what freeware programmes are available, but,
for example, Norton Utilities Disk Editor, treating the hard drive as a
physical drive - you should be able to browse it (it has a lot of sectors
though!) to find where partitions start and at least recover data
(probably only data that is in plain text files on defragged sections).
