I'm using a Audio Excel MD-Mate, which is a PCI card based on the cmpci
8738 chipset. It supports SPDIF in and out and TOSLink, if you have a
MD-Recorder (like me). I'm using the ALSA driver and it works great.
You haven't heard MP3's until they've been SPDIFFED out to a decent amp.
:-)
I picked mine up for $80 at CompUSA (I know... I know...)

I found this support, in the stock 2.2.16 kernel source tree, at
your favourite kernel.org mirror. grab the full source for 2.2.16, and
give that a compile. You should find what you're looking for, in there.

Hi !
What do I've to do to make a MS SideWinder Joystick "working"
with a sb pci 128 on a Suse Linux 6.4 machine ?
I've tried to install the Linux Joystick driver v1.2.15 : nothing !
Niente ! Nada ! Rien !
Getting mad with it !
Alternatively, I'm also looking for the IPChains to enable multiplayer
capabilities
of fs2000 thrue a firewall (Suse 6.3)
Thanks a lot !

If that isn't there, it needs to be. In /etc/conf.modules, you need a
line like so:
options es1371 joystick=0x200
then unload and reload the es1371 module. Once that's done, just insmod
joystick and insmod joy-sidewinder and you should be set. It might be
worth looking at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/joystick/ if you haven't
already.

Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 23:29:46 GMT
Ok I am having an extremely similar problem, but no ISA is involved
whatsoever. I have an Intel SE440BX2 motherboard with an integrated Yamaha
DS-XG sound chip (PCI) that is running on IRQ 11. I am also using a 3Com
56K V.90 Controller-based modem also running on IRQ 11. I have no problems
in Windows, but in Linux apparently these two are not cooperating together
real well. When I have the ALSA sound drivers loaded I can not access my
modem at all, and when I am online I can not open my ALSA sound drivers.
I'm positive that it's got to do with both of them being on the same IRQ,
but I don't know how to change it. I have attempted going into the CMOS
and setting IRQ 11 as "reserved" only for both devices to attempt to occupy
IRQ 14. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Say yes after it plays/doesn't play the test sound, and let it set up
the driver. Then try to play a sound. When I was using my Yamaha
OPL3/SAx with RH 6.0, the sndconfig test never worked, but XMMS and
other programs outputting sound worked fine. I would think you would
have little problem the ES1371 (yes, that's what it really is -
Creative bought out Ensoniq and renamed their line of cards) under
linux, as it is PCI and should be configured pretty automatically.

One sample of why, from the log:
kernel: unexpected IRQ vector 217 on CPU#1!
Apparently this new functionality requires adding irq handler code, but
the code doesn't exist, so it sends it to limbo. It is good, however, to
see progress on this subject. Apparently the IRQ assertion needs a
handler. Chances are that the hardware that the assertion uses
hard-codes or firm-codes 217 as a standardized value (or soon-to-be).
Will anyone be able to use this new information to help stabilize the
i840 boards?

A little bit of "why" would probably be beneficial.
The fact that there's virtually no swap in use indicates that there is
"enough" memory to satisfy the requirements for program/data.
The fact that the whole 64MB is in use indicates that the system was
able to make beneficial use of all that memory, for storing programs,
data, and cacheing files.
If more RAM were added, that would contribute primarily to cacheing
files, which should improve performance somewhat. Probably not
_massively_, but at least some.

Hi Jeff. We just got two of those i180 cheapbastards in here and had a
wrastling match with'em. I went the RH62 route, and experiencd all the
same problems you are (solved now though, after much pain)
Another guy had a Mandrake 7.1 CD... guess what... zero trouble. These
are (stupid/cheap/crap) Dell Optiplex GX110 boxes with the
i810/810e/AC'97).
Neither of us still have sound (crap AC'97), but we're working.
I feel yer pain bro... seriously. I had the exact same XFree 4
problems you did. I went and fetched all those glide libs too... only
to find out it was useless because the XFree86 -configure would end up
halting on a signal anyway later (grrrrrrrrrrrrr).
If you'd like my working XF4.0 XF86Config for the 810e, I'd be happy to
share it. Unfortunately, you also have to go through the runaround of a
kernel update (to get agpgart) before getting it to work though, you
can't just take my file and have it working. Also, it has been
mentioned before to avoid the Intel agpgart, and use the one in the
kernel update. I tried both, and had better luck with the 2.2.16-3
kernel.
Good luck. You're not alone man... i810 support from RH62 is really,
really (really!) poor... but it can be conquered, if you're up to it.
