Could anyone tell me the basics of setting up this particular device?

Might it be possible to use AT commands?

I think so, yes. There's only one way to really find out... hehe. Anyway,
this is relatively new hardware which should support this option.

I don't know this particular device. But if it is really a ISDN TA connected
to the serial port, then it is in fact set up using AT commands. For
linux, it is treated like a plain external modem.

Linux doesn't fully support USB right now which will probably hinder
your progress, at least until 2.4 comes out (whenever that will be). At
this time the best thing to do is to get USB setup by looking at the
site that is developing USB for Linux. I can't remember the name but
doing a search should surely find it. This may get usb setup for your
current kernel however it may not provide support for the actual cdrw
drive you are working with.

That's as far as my knowledge goes.

A real modem never requires a driver contrary to what Windows makes you
think.
Anyway, check out http://o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html to see if yours
is a winmodem. If it's not then it will work in Linux.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 18 Aug 2000 12:06:54 +0200

Hi all!

On my X screen, I get a vertical stippled line. This line appears
even if I start the server without any arguments at all, i.e. without
loading any clients or window managers.

This is not visible in low-resolution modes, but appears at 1024x768,
1152x864, and 1280x1024. It is at different positions: as the
resolution increases, it moves to the right and upward, and space
between stipples increases.

The line is not just a display artifact, but actually appears in video
memory: If I make a screenshot, it is present in the screenshot file.
If part of the screen with the line scrolls, or if I move a window
across it, all pixels that come in contact with the line get "tainted"
and stay violet until redrawn by the application.

I am running on a new K6-2 500 with a new Matrox MGA G400 board, using
XFree86 3.3.6 and the utah-glx drivers. If I comment out the Modules
section from XF86Config, thus not loading the utah-glx drivers but
using the SVGA driver, nothing changes. The system is continuously
on, and the problem first appeared after two days running in high-res
mode.

I am a bit stuck at this point and would appreciate any help.

TIA,
Marc Andre

Hi,

I remember having read somewhere (I believe it was the ZIP HOWTO) that you
should FIRST load the imm module because otherwise parport will claim all
parallel ports it finds for itself leaving nothing for imm.
Try to move 'insmod imm' above 'insmod parport'.

(I only have this from the documentation. I've been doing quite some reading
on ZIP since I'm going to buy a ZIP-drive myself very shortly, I don't have
any practical experience on this, yet ;-(

Regards,
Nico.

Hrm.. Well, then. Winmodem support isn't that great under Linux, if the
support is there at all... Might want to think about getting a real modem, if
you're having trouble with yours, or wait for improved drivers for your

Standard trackballs are no different than mice really so there shouldn't
be much problems. I use a Mouse Systems PC-Trackball II in Mouse Systems

Alternatively, is there a serious PC-specific LCD competitor in the same

Recently I posted a request here asking about a SuperMicro Super 370DL3
/ 370DLE motherborad (they are essentially the same board, the only diff
is that the DL3 has onboard SCSI). The nice thing about these boards is
that they are dual processor (socket 370) motherboards supporting the
Intel Pentium III Coppermine with a 133Mhz FSB. Unfortunately I was on
vacation for 10days and then our news server suffered a disk crash and
lost all old messages and was down for another week - basically if
anyone responded to my post, I didn't see it... So I ask again...

Does anyone know anything about the SuperMicro 370DL3 mother board? Does
anyone know anything about the performance of the ServerWorks SeverSet
III LE chipset? I've been looking for benchmarks & reviews of this
board but I haven't found anything. Any thoughts or suggestions?

From: Art Werschulz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 13:57:37 GMT

Hi.

I'm running RedHat Linux 6.2 on a Dell box. "uname -a" produces the
output
  Linux sobolev 2.2.16-3 #1 Mon Jun 19 19:11:44 EDT 2000 i686 unknown

Juding from the output of "xstart", I am using an ATI Mach64 AGP
graphics card with 4 Megs of VRAM. Here are some of the details from
the output:

  (--) Mach64: PCI: Mach64 RagePro rev 92, Aperture @ 0x41000000,
       Registers @ 0x40000000, Block I/O @ 0x1000
  (--) Mach64: Card type: AGP
  (--) Mach64: Memory type: SGRAM (1:1) (5)
  (--) Mach64: Video RAM: 4096k

I would like to have more VRAM. I'm not particularly interested in
gaming; I would just like (e.g.) wmaker to have sufficient colors
available, and I would like netscape to not need a local colormap.

So:

(1) Can additional memory be added to this card?

(2) If not, what would be a good replacement card to use? What
gotchas should I be watching for?

Thanks.

It could be that the corel kernel was compiled without versioning info,
check this by the output of the following:

grep printk /proc/ksyms
nm /lib/modules/2.2.12.misc/snd.o | grep printk

Does the first one give printk and the second printk_Rsmp_1b7d4074?

These kind of problems have also been reported with the NVIDIA modules.
You might be able to solve this by compiling alsa without versioning
info, i.e., after ./configure comment out the GENKSYMS=... line in
Makefile.conf. For me this is
# GENKSYMS=/sbin/genksyms -k 2.2.16
but you probably have to put a # sign in front of
GENKSYMS=/sbin/genksyms -k 2.2.12 ...

Best get the "drivers" from digi itself. If you install them the script asks
you which board is installed, compiles the drivers and makes you nice boot
scripts. All you will have to do is to call the digi script from your rc
script. The ports are called /dev/ttyD0...15. So you won't to compile a new
kernel or something like this. The described software can be found at
http://support.digi.com/support/drivers/linux/4001450M.rpm
I have done so under SuSE linux so it wouldn't be very helpfull to describe
how to edit the rc files in this enviroment but I guess RedHat has it in
/etc/rc.d/...
By the way RedHat 6.2 is listed at Digi as supported OS but not SuSE so you
should definitely get it running :-)

Hey all,

I've got a 3 month old installation of Mandrake 7.0 (2.2.14) on a PII
233 with an 8.4GB disk. In the last couple of days, the system has
frozen solid, forcing a hard reboot.

Is this indicative of a bad cpu? Scrolling through Netscape, untaring a
file, etc. Any event seems to bung it up. I've not added any new
software or done any system updates in the last three months. I'm
fearful that it's the disk, as any attempt to copy the contents of my
home partition (/dev/hdc3) to another disk causes a freeze.

I have Win95 on my first disk, and have been unable to cause it to
freeze, no matter what.

Any ideas, thoughts, or chunks of wisdom?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Thanks for your help in advance

I'm trying to install redhat 5.0 on a vintage compaq 486sx33 circa

me during setup to autoprobe.

I have checked the Hardware compatibility FAQ (updated 9/99) and the
Adaptec AHA 1510/AIC6360 is listed as supported. However when I look on
the redhat site only the AIC 6360 is listed in the most recent version
and not in any of the previous releases. So whats going on here?

Is the fix as simple as getting the most recent version of redhat or
another distribution?

I've checked the caldera and corel websites and it is not listed. The
slackware site says it supports every thing in the Hardware compatibilty
FAQ. I haven't checked debian or turbolinux yet.

I appreciate your response to my question. The boot floppy was created
while compiling the kernel. I use make bZdisk for the creation. I don't
know what files or on it since I can't read it. I would like to solve
this problem so when I write files to a floppy from another program to
be able to read it. If i format a floppy and put a filesystem on it
(ext2), can I just copy a file from the hard drive to it. This isn't
necessarily referring to a boot floppy.
