Subject: Problem with a 30.7Go Maxtor HD
Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 11:06:45 GMT

Hi everyone,
I hope this is the good newsgroup, if not, let me know so that I can go
elsewhere to shade my tears ;o)
I got a problem relative to the installation of linux on my computer. Here's
the situation.
It is made of 2 HD : 1 IBM ULTRA66 of 13 Go formatted in FAT 32 and running
my windows 98 OS and 1 new Maxtor ULTRA100 Diamondmax of 30.7 Go. Both of
them are connected to a ULTRA66 card on the motherboard.
The idea was to partition this new disk (which is a slave one) with 8 Go
formatted in Linux and with another one of 128 Mo for lnux swap. The other
22 Go or so where supposed to be formatted in DOS.
I first tried to format the windows partitions with fdisk. It worked
perfectly. I had let the other 8 Go free so that the partioning could be
done under DrakX once it would have been launched.
But (here comes the problems... T_T) when I launched DrakX, it told me that
I had a 13Go first HD called hde and then, the other disk, according to him,
was an 8Go drive called hdf...
We tried to use fdisk under linux from another computer on this one and the
result was that my new HD was seen as a 8Go HD with 16383 cylinders or so
whereas under fdisk in DOS mode, it had a 29311 Mb capacity.
I tried to install Suse 6.4 thinking that mandrake had a problem but it also
told me that this drive was an 8 Gb drive :o(

We tried to change the number of cylinders under fdisk in expert mode but it
did not work... More important, a diagnosys told us that some partitions
were crossing each other, and I don't believe it is normal ^_^;;;
The first time I tried to partition it I was able to use 120% of my HD
capacity........ since under the dos fdisk I could always fill 29311 Mb even
with 8 Gb already formatted in Linux and Linux swap...
We also tried to reformat, reinstall everything but it did not work... And
also, if I install it on the first 13 Gb HD, keeping the new HD for windows,
it won't recognize all the capacity of the HD, so I don't think it is a
solution, not talking about the fct that I don't have an application such as
partition magic ...

It does not appear to be a real hardware problem since it works under the
DOS fdisk, but more a problem of compatiblity with linux.

So there is my problem, I don't want to use only 8Gb on a 30.7 Gb but using
linux, it appears to be the only way... And I really would like to try linux
because I am tired of crashing and seeing this blue screen all the time ;_;
Thank you very much in advance if you can help me.
Goodie, linux newbie, eating his table *crunch* *crunch*

VFAT filesystems mount on /dev/sda4. However, if you reformat your ZIP
disk with an ext2 filesystem then it will mount on /dev/sda1 instead. As
for WHY, I have absolutely no idea. However, it does mean that your
/etc/fstab is unambigous:

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfat rw,user,noauto,unhide
/dev/sda1 /mnt/zip2 ext2 rw,noauto

The trick will be to configure the parport modules correctly. For
example, a typical modules.conf might contain these lines:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc irq=7,5 io=0x378,0x278

However, I have no idea which IRQ and IO port your second LPT port is
using. You should use whatever values you configured (jumpered?) your
ISA card to. When you load the parport modules, you will then have two
devices, parport0 and parport1 (check in /proc), and the ppa module will
scan them both for a ZIP drive when it loads.

I recommend using EEP on the second port since I don't think that ppa
supports ECP.

I made a 'ln -s /dev/lp0 /dev/scanner'. 'find-scanner' opens the device
but still no scanner is found. Do I have to load some modules before?

Ok, I built all the SCSI stuff into the kernel rather than have it
modular, but what finally fixed this problem was makeing /dev/scd8 and
/dev/sg8 (and /dev/sgi)

It seems the philips drive takes up /dev/scd[0-7] and /dev/sg[0-7] for
some reason. Making those files with mknod made cdrecord -scanbus notice
the Teac drive at once.

Thanks for the tips.

I need a Fibre Channel solution for a 17 node Linux Cluster. I noticed
that there is support for 1 fibre channel card in the Linux kernel,
but I wanted to speak to anyone who may have put fibre channel in a
Linux machine and see what they recommended.

This is probably a red herring, but if you use X-Windows (I assume you
do) you do not need gpm. If this does not help, try changing the mouse
type in XF86Setup. If you are not using X then I don't
know......Sorry.

Actually, I have already experimented mounting with /dev/sda and /dev/sda1.
Neither works. Now I must give you a little bit of history here. This same
zip drive and the same exact disks used to be mountable on /dev/sda4 on
my older PC, which used to have Red Hat 6.1 installed. I have since handed
down that PC to my son, since I bought myself a new one.

So, once upon a time all of my zip disks were mountable on /dev/sda4
under Red Hat 6.0 and 6.1. This is the first time I have attempted to
use the zip drive under Red Hat 6.2.

Hmm, I thought my /etc/fstab file was pretty specific in the original
posting. Besides, the same zip drive with the same disks used to mount
as vfat file systems under /dev/sda4 in RH 6.0 and 6.1. Only now that
I have bought a new PC and switched to RH 6.2 does this problem present
itself.

I will certainly try what you have proposed and post back the results.

I am running into what sounds like the same problem with a
Seagate Barracuda and a several year old AHA 2940UW. I'm quite
certain termination is correct. I've tried this drive alone
(on the wide bus, still have a CD-ROM and DAT on the narrow
portion of the bus) with termination enabled and with two other
drives with termination supplied by another drive. (Before
trying to add the drive, I had a working system with three IBM
Ultrastor UW drives runnning the 2.2.12 Kernel with no apparent
problems. Until one of the drives failed, that is.)

I was able to format the drive under Windows NT and copy files
to it, so it seems that the hardware works. There must be
something different about how the Linux driver handles the
    drive that triggers this problem.

The first error message I see before the endless loop of SCSI
bus resets starts has text something along the line of 'Testing
    Unit Ready'

There seem to be others experiencing the same problem, so it
does not appear to be a sample defect with the drive.

I also have a monitor doing that. Its the monitors preset sync
circuitry. Either you are set right on the borderline of its detection
window for that set of operating parameters, or the detection circuitry
itself is flakey. On my old junker 17", I think its the detection
circuitry. Annoying yes, but apparently harmless in my case. I can
hear a relay click, the h scan collapses and comes right back up. Its
been doing it for 4 years now, independant of the computer or os driving
it. Since a decent new on in that size range is a bit pricy, I guess it
can blimk once in a while.

Cheers, Gene

Thank you for the response.

I wasn't clear on this issue. When I said 370, I meant the chipset
i815(?) and when I said Slot 1, I meant BX chipset. Sorry for the
confusion on my part.

Should I get a smp board based on the BX chipset or an smp board based on
the 815(?) chipset? The most important criteria being compatibility with
Linux.

I'm feeling too dumb to own a computer right now, but
I've been working on this off and on for weeks now, and I'm
not making a bit of progress. I have Redhat 6.2 (Kernel
2.2.14-5.0) installed on an Intel box with an external 3Com
USR 56K Faxmodem v.90 modem, Sportster 5686-03 and I can't
get it to work, although I've seen several postings on the net
saying it's works very well with RedHat.. I believe the problem
is in my serial port configuration. I've had the modem and
cable running on a Win2k box. I'm connecting through the COM
ports on the motherboard and I've tried both of them with an
equal lack of success. I've been through the FAQs, HOW-TOs,
books, the so-called mfgr support, and talked to whoever I
could find with any Unix/Linux experience. If anyone can offer
any help, suggestions, hints, or point me in some productive
direction, I'd really, really appreciate it. I've tacked on
the results of several diagnostic tools I've used at the end
of this message. Thanks again.

SSB,

I'm not sure this explanation makes sense. I would expect _polling_ to
suck up an inordinate number of cycles, since the CPU is likely to spend
a lot of time waiting for the printer to free up its internal buffer (if
any) and report an un-busy condition.

With IRQ-driven printing, the CPU only pays attention to the printer
when it is out of power, out of paper (sometimes), or out of bytes to
print, then it rapidly dumps enough data down the pipe to fill the
printer's internal buffer back up. Much less processor overhead.

I can't speak for Linux, since I've never checked into this particular
aspect of the system. I do know that OS/2 defaults to polled printer
support, and enabling interrupt-driven support (adding /IRQ to the
driver line) speeds up printing _and_ makes the system much more
responsive.

MSWinNT, at least through v4.x, has _no_ support for interrupt-driven
printing, as I painfully discovered trying to screen-dump a DOS session
to a slow printer with an 80-byte buffer. Don't know if MS added this
in for MSWin2K.

Hope this makes sense...

Ummm... can you *get* a i815 based SMP board? I haven't heard of one... The socket
370 boards SMP boards I've found so far are i840 based, VIA Apollo PRO (133A) based,
or ServerWorks ServerSet III (LE/HE) based. I understand the i840 based boards have
a few problems (expensive memory, and Linux compatibility). The VIA Apollo PRO
chipset is used in a number of single and dual processor motherboards and provides a
133Mhz FSB. The ServerWorks ServerSet III boards provide a 133Mhz FSB plus two PCI
buses, one of which allows 64bit PCI cards. The BX /GX based motherboards will only
provide a 100Mhz FSB.
