I actually like the Micron ZX very much. Except for the fact that it
has one of these ltmodems in it, it works perfectly with linux. That
even works with the lucent driver, with the exception of this sound
problem.
It works with the maestro sound module and I can play other sounds
through it.
Someone else suggested that I use the 'M1' setting in the init string,
but that didn't work either.
Any other ideas out there?

This may be a dumb question, but did you remember to compile in ide-
floppy support. Could the kernel be trying to load it as a regulare
IDE drive?

i have exactly the same scenario only with an Erazor X2 (GeForce).
Ive tried the TurboLinux install and tried using the SVGS X server
and the video mode test fails on every resolution and it will not let me
go past it or cancel it or use my own drivers off disk. my question is the
same..how can i install the drivers if i cant install Linux in the first
place.
i will attach what i found on the web though and posted to another nesgroup.
if anybody can help it would be appreciated.
>>>>
i tried installing TurboLinux with the exact card you have, the ELSA Erazor
X2
but no luck. i tried the SVGA option in the X server. the weblink at
http://linux.integrity.hu/en/html/glx_64.html says that should work for any
GeForce card.
well from our installs it doesnt work with either the Suse or Turbo versions
of the Linux
install. I did find some Nvidia specific drivers but I have no idea how to
incorporate them into
my setup. the link is at
http://www.nvidia.com/products.nsf/htmlmedia/detonator3.html
if you have any idea on how to do this then please let me know ASAP.

Hi David,
it looks strange to me that you use /dev/nrst0c. I guess that it should be
/dev/nrst0. Just check dmesg output for "st" device to check which number it
got for rst?. If you mean compression for the tape there should be option for
mt (check man st). You can control compression by dip switches on the tape
drive - check manufacture web site for the settings. Check that you do not
created file /dev/nrst0c by "file dev/nrst0c". There are two types of access
to tape 1) nrst? no rewind and 2) rst? rewind to begin of the tape. I bet
that you created file /dev/nrst1c instead to put file on tape and try to
rewind forward tape to end of the file which is not on the tape. This is why
"it returns immediately".
Don't worry it will work. Just check that you do all correct.

I am trying to install TurboLinux 6.0 on my machine
but I have a GeForce card and the video probe does
not detect my card. i pick SVGA of the X server and then
i choose evry resolution but the video test fails on all and
then i cant cancel out of it so im just stuck there with no where
to go. How can I install the OS if i cant install the video drivers
to actually see what im doing. If someone could give me a step
by step so that i can get this thing running that would be helpful.
I know some stuff about Linux but for the most part im not sure how
the install functions. I do have two RPM's from the Nvidia site.
one is a GLX and the other is a kernel. not sure what to do with those
or how i can incorporate them into the install.
PLEASE HELP. Im very computer literate and this stuff just boggles
me. im starting to understand why so few people switch or test Linux.
anyways,

Using ppa (for Zip drives) (or imm for ZipPlus drives - a later
version) which provide a SCSI driver for the drive connected to the
parallel port (of course you need the parallel port driver too) ... one
quick way to check the scsi bus is to use cdrecord as in:
cdrecord -scanbus
If everything is working that should show your Zip drive.

DVDs consist of movie material and encryption key.
The key resides in a special sector on the disk that is
pre-written to all zeros on blanks.
So, no, blank DVD disks are not available that can be used
for DVD copying.
Besides, DVD blanks are more expensive than DVDs for movies are,
currently.

Most likely your USB change ate the IRQ for the sound card or moved it.
Everytime you add something like the USB support you need to review what IRQ
got assigned to whom and review the conf.modules and the isapnp.conf details
(both files are in /etc) to make sure they all agree after the change with the
actual hardware assignments. A simple step by step approach is:
1. Before you make the change print a copy of /proc/pci and /proc/ioports
and /proc/interrupts
2. After you make the change do the same
1. Observe what has changed and review the configuration files for any
required updates, make them and reboot
There is always a chance that you will find that you have maxed out on IRQ's
that devices can use and then you need to make some tough choices. Probably
you aren't there if everything works under windows.
Another approach is to observe the windows assignments of this stuff and if
yuo have PNP hardware just mimick it in the configuratin files.
Good luck!

True, good possibilities, but I still see a lot of postings where lots of
bad hardware is suddenly discovered upon Linux installations... One would
wonder why didn't these problems didn't appear before they changed from
other leading brand OS...

I have a diamond viper II 32 mb AGP video card. My motherboard, Abit BE6-II

Ultra 66 controllers. Unfortunately when I install the OS I can only use 16
colors because it couldn't find a compatible driver for my card.
Can anyone tell me where I could find a driver that would work? Any and all

But, if you could decrypt the movie you are copying (DeCSS), couldn't
you the write an unencrypted copy of the movie without needing to
write to the key sectors?
Or is it not possible to burn movies to a DVD-R(AM), even unencrypted?

Why do you think it should be detected? Are things "detected" in your
distro of linux, whartever it is? I'd expect to configure it, myself!
That involves checking it's not a winmodem, then running isapnp to
configure it, then running setseriual to configure your kernel to match
(after having carefully configured the bios to not allocate the
resources you want to someone else).
If it is a winmodem, you are probably SOOL.
Read the modem howto, or your distros instructions, whichever appeals
most.
