I am trying to find whatever information I can on the Lexmark Z12 Inkjet
Printer, and a driver if possible...I have scoured the internet and I am
unable to find anything about it. If anyone has any information, such as
whether it is PCL, Postscript, etc., please let me know.
I tried the Lexmark 5000 driver, all I could get the printer to do was
spit out a sheet of paper, lock up lpd, and it never did anything else
after that.

Subject: problems with Compaq QVision 1280 video card
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 03:31:22 GMT
Hello. I'm running XFree86 3.3.6 in Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 on a Compaq
Deskpro 590 with a Compaq QVision 1280 video card. My monitor is an NEC
MultiSync XE15.
According to my XF86Config file, the VertRefresh setting is set to
55-120 Hz and HorizRefresh is set at 31-65 kHz (are these the right
settings?) Ctrl-Alt-Plus switches me between two modes -
640x480x256colors and 800x600x256colors.
The card works fine in 640x480x256colors, but at 800x600x256, I get a
weird interference pattern onscreen - many thin rows of multicolored
dots that scroll endlessly downwards - when they disappear off the
bottom of the screen, they reappear instantly at the top.
1. What can I do to solve the problem of interference at 800x600?
2. If #1 can't be fixed, how can I get X to run at 1024x768?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Moved modem to ttyS2 - now dead.
Hello all,
I had to move my modem to serial port ttyS2 (from ttyS1) to free up com
2 for my new hotsync cable (It's a long story why I did this but lets
say it was to get my hotsync working with the other MS OS). Anyway, I
moved the jumper settings on modem card to com3, IRQ 5. I then fixed up
my ppp-on script and changed my pppd to use /dev/ttyS2. The modem works
without a problem when running it with OS/2 but it kinda hangs there in
S.u.S.E.
The clip from the messages log looks like this;
Sep 3 13:42:43 titan pppd[271]: pppd 2.3.10 started by root, uid 0
Sep 3 13:42:44 titan chat[274]: send (ATZ^M)
Sep 3 13:42:44 titan chat[274]: expect (OK)
Sep 3 13:43:28 titan su: (to root) root on /dev/pts/2
Sep 3 13:43:29 titan chat[274]: alarm
Sep 3 13:43:29 titan chat[274]: Failed
Sep 3 13:43:29 titan pppd[271]: Connect script failed
Sep 3 13:43:30 titan pppd[271]: Exit.
Note: this message doesn't always show up. Also it seems like I don't
get any response from the modem on additional attempts after the initial
fail. It almost seems like the hardware locks or hangs.
Boy, I sure would love some advise on this one. I'd like to go back to
surfing on my Linux soon.
Thanks.

Hi All,
Two questions to ask:
1)I'm using Slackware3.0(kernel 2.0.0), but cant mount /mnt/cdrom and
/mnt/floppy. I can see my cdrom using dmesg command like-- hdd:CS-R38 ATAPI
CD-ROM Drive, also under /dev--i can see cdrom--->dev/hdd, then when i use
mount /mnt/cdrom commnad, it respond " mount:mount point /mnt/cdrom does not
exit"(my setting in /etc/fstab---/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauot,owner 0
0).
2)when i exec mount /fd0/floppy, system respond "fs type vfat not supported
by kernel". Is modfying kernel a only way to deal with, if so where can i
get better sources to do so('cause i read some HOWTOs but dont explain
clearly to deal wiht my problems)

Try
mount /dev/cdrom
and
mount /dev/fd0
Those work for me in Mandrake.

I'm not sure if it is or not, but at the point where you're getting a
dual-CPU machine, you really do want to recompile anyway.
> Now a question about performance, I know every application might not

Expect a single application to perform the same as on a single 233, and
two applications to perform as if they each had a 233. There is some
overhead, but from a "seat-of-the-pants", that's about what you should
expect.
(BTW, you can easily and safely increase the bus on a P233 to 75 MHz, which
will give you very nice results, as you're getting a much higher bandwidth
to everything off of the CPU.)

It really depends on your app. If your app is I/O-bound, a system with a
good SCSI drive would win out. If it's CPU-bound, then the system with the
fastest CPU would win.
> How would the dual board function as a server compared to the others?
Depends on what you're serving. ; ) Chances are that it will do much
better.

Check the SETI page, it has it broken down by processor.

You can try local used hardware places, "property surplus" at universities
or military bases, or just ask around with the local tech-weenies. Most of
them have at least a few 10 mbit cards lying around collecting dust.

Subject: Flash Bios with linux
Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 00:28:51 -0600
I have a dell optiplex gx90 upgraded to a pentium 120. I need to flash the
bios, so I created a dos boot disc from a win 98 se box with "format a: /q
/s." I deleted drvspace.bin after the first try to be sure that it wasnt the
problem. When I insert the floppy, the system accesses the drive, and just
sits there without doing anything, or giving me any type of error message.
If I press a key on the keyboard, it seems like it tries again and again but
nothing happens. Finally, when I remove the floppy and press a key, the
system goes right into LILO. I'm running linux 2.2.14. Does anyone know why
this doesn't work?

Check to see if there's an audio out jack on the TV card - this may need to
be hooked up to the line input on your sound card.

Ok Scott,
Let me ask you a question: Did your eMahine came with Windows preloaded?
My IBM ThinkPad 380ED did and I installed RedHat on top of it. For the
next week, I tried fruitlesly to get the sound working. Until I decided
to try something else. I fdisked the baby and got it to Windows
once more. I was greated by Windows "Ta Taaan" sound. I headed for the
control panel, and copied down how to configure the device (System,
Device Manager, I beleive, dont remember). Then I reinstalled RedHat,
and put all the data I had written down with sndconfig. Success on
first try!
I do not know what the command would be for Mandrake, but sndconfig is
just a nice interface to /etc/conf.modules. In the worst case, put your
config there or do it by replacing the addresses, irqs, dmas, etc into
the different modprobe lines.
Also note that my ThinkPad came with a CS4236 (wich is really a CS4232)
configured as was told to you by the previous poster, so I cannot tell
you what

I assume that is "does not exist". Does it? See if there is an empty
directory /mnt/cdrom/ (you will have to create it if it is not there).
(my setting in /etc/fstab---/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauot,owner 0

well, then you would have to do a mount /dev/hdd (there is no entry
telling it how to mound /dev/cdrom) or change the entry in fstab to
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner 0 0
> 2)when i exec mount /fd0/floppy, system respond "fs type vfat not supported

What's the fstab entry for this? And don't you mean "mount /dev/fd0"?
Can you mount ext2 filesystems on floppies?

Huh? Do you have a printer on the same parallel port? If so then try

What modules are loaded at the time? You need:
scsi_core
sd_mod
ppa
parport
parport_pc
Please indicate which of these modules (if any) are compiled into the
kernel, and whether you have any other SCSI devices in your system.
