I know that SANE was installed when I did the installation of Mandrake=20

Hi Jim,
do you have a documentation for your modem? If yes, check modem commands
for the modem.
Normaly to disable sound on dial up you can use ATM0L0 and to switch modem
speaker to loud you
can use ATM3L3 or something like that. TO be sure read modem commands
documentation, they
should point this there. After you will figure out commands you can add
them in you initiation
string and it should works after that. ( I guess that some software which
you run can disable speaker
- this why you sometimes hear sound and sometimes not)

The number of times I am about to post a message and solve it _before_
posting!
I tried a couple of things just now:
o Installed 2.2.17
o Replaced the network cable - it seems to have failed during my "problem
solving" effort. Bad timing.
The machine can see the network. I rebooted the 2.2.14 kernel (with the
1.0.0c version of the 3c905 driver as a loadable module) and ths one works
too!
Never mind,,,

My prob is solved, I had used my old .config to compile my kernel - just forgot
to rename it!
Now it's not perfect, but I get about 20M/sec.
Just get the ide-patch from
ftp://ftp.be.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/
(or some other mirror)
And compile it with support for dma and your card,
eg. the Promise Ultra66 is the PDC20262.
See the kernel docs for your card...
Good luck.

Hi,
I have a Segate 18GB Ultra2 SCSI HD, after I "fdisk" it and write the
partition to disk. It work fine without any error message, but the
problem is that when I quit fdisk and enter fdisk again, the partition
table does not change as I modify before.
what's the problem?? Harddisk problem or fdisk problem? It have also
use "cfdisk", but with the same result.

I have got a Compaq P70 monitor.
I like to get the frequences (vert & hori) that work best for it.
I have been on the http://www.compaq.com & http://www.compaq.fr sites.
I have not been able to find the technical details of the P70.
Does anybody have them? or
Is there a place somewhere to get them?
Very best regards,

RedHat definitely provides sources. Install the kernel-source and
kernel-headers packages. Be sure to install the same version as your
installed kernel (2.2.16-3). They can be downloaded from the same place
the kernel update itself was downloaded from.

I haven't actually used one, but if your drive is SCSI-2 or SCSI-3
compliant, the generic SCSI tape driver (st) should work fine with it.
You may have to fiddle with the mt command to set compression, density
and block sizes to something appropriate for your drive and media, but
this shouldn't be a big deal.
As a test, backup a few megabytes of files on the Sun (using tar
format), then try and restore then on Linux. Then backup a few
megabytes of files on Linux and try to restore them on the Sun. If it
works in both directions, then you probably don't need to do anything
else.
The only real catch here is that the Linux PC should have a SCSI card
fast enough for the drive. Many DLT drives are Ultra2 or Ultra160
(LVD), and won't perform at top speed unless attached to a similar
interface. Still, SCSI cards aren't _that_ expensive these days.

Subject: maxtor 54098U8 read performance slows down, drive problem?
Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2000 20:40:13 +0200
Hi,
I ask this because we have a very strange problem with a
asus k7V and two maxtor ide 54098U8 40 Gb drives.
Bios V1.003 (now V1.007 but no difference).
I use a SuSE 6.4 ide Kernel 2.2.14 with
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_VIA82CXXX=y
no (own) ide patch applied.
I start dma with
/sbin/hdparm -c1 -m16 -d1 -X66 /dev/hda
/sbin/hdparm -c1 -m16 -d1 -X66 /dev/hdc
(one disk per controller)
In the first couple of months
hdparm -t /dev/hda -> 17-18 Mb/s
hdparm -t /dev/hdc -> 15-16 Mb/s
The disk on first controller is always faster (no matter which disk, no
matter which cable).
Then the disk performance of the first disk slows down to
hdparm -t /dev/hda -> 0.7-2.7 Mb/s
and while copy operation the system was frozen. But no problems with
data corruption, no errors in any log files, no other hint that dma was
off. We send the disk back to the distributor, he has verified the
problem and send the disk back to maxtor (no answer since (6 weeks)).
Then we changed the mode of the second disk to udma 2 (default 4) and
put it on the first controller:
hdparm -t /dev/hda -> 17-18 Mb/s
After a couple of month the disk slows down to 8 Mb/s, the actual read
performance was 1.9-2.8 Mb/s (last week) and is now about 1 Mb/s.
The disk was nearly not used in the last weeks.
The bonnie benchmark gives good block write (17-24 Mb/s) but the same
bad block read performance. We use reiserfs, but I think at least hdparm
should be fs independent, correct?
Now I have applied the
ide.2.2.16.all.20000825
patch and use Kernel 2.2.16 with parameter idebus=33, everything works
fine, but the read performance of
the maxtor 54098U8 7200U/min is still disastrous.
Today I have got a maxtor 94610U6 5400U/min for testing, and
hdparm -t /dev/hda
gives more than 26 Mb/s.
Is there a known problem with the maxtor 54098U8 disks or has anybody an
idea what happens?

Subject: microATX motherboards?
Date: 6 Sep 2000 19:31:36 GMT
I'm looking to build a new simple firewall machine. I had been using a
486, but it's old and is getting expensive to fix/upgrade. Harddrive
failed last week, etc., etc., etc. So, I've been checking things out and
ran across microATX form factor mobo's with onboard vid, aud, and lan,
etc.
General Technics, http://www.gtweb.net/, has a new 2U rackmount for
microATX at a good price, which includes 2 PCI riser cards (for the
NIC's), which I'm seriously thinking of using if I can find a good
microATX mobo.
Does anyone have any experience with running Linux on a microATX form
factor mobo? Opinion?
One, in particular, catches my eye:
The ASUS MEZ-M is based on the Intel 440ZX AGPset in the microATX form
factor for the latest support Intel CeleronTM processors designed for
Socket 370TM. The mainboard includes ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X with optional
Creative ES1373 PCI Audio and 18-bit Audio CODEC onboard. In addition, it
also provides Quick Adjustments, Easy Installation and Concurrent PCI
functions for allowing users to monitor, auto-detect and accessing the
system comfortably, accurately and efficiently.
The Intel 440ZX AGPset brings 100-MHz FSB (front-side bus) and PC100
SDRAM performance to entry-level Performance PCs.It builds on the proven
value of the Intel 440BX AGPset architecture to bring quality and
reliability to Performance PCs at entry-level prices.
Supports Socket 370TM Processors 300MHz and Above. Optimized for the
microATX form factor. Support2 100NHz Front Side Bus. Builds on 440BX
AGPSet core architecture. Supports AGP 1X/2X. Supports Slot 1 architecture
Opinion?
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

It should be included in any sane Ghostscript package. Examine the

Yes, I am aware of no multifunction devices which work completely with
free software.

For scanner suggestions, see the SANE project's website, the URL for
which I have of course forgotten. Use google.
For printer suggestions, see http://www.linuxprinting.org/
You will probably be happiest with an Epson Stylus; effectively all
Styli are now fully supported by free software's `stp' Ghostscript
driver. Most HP, Canon, and Lexmark models are not well-supported.

I think I was having a similar problem after installing a CD writer and
upgrading to linux 2.4.0-test4, but my Zip drive works now after loading the sd

My /etc/modules.conf (== conf.modules in 2.2ese)

2.2 probably calls sd sd_mod.
