Can any recommend a nice frame grabber they are using for Linux?
I need the frame grabber to accept separate R,G,B inputs (not just
composite).
I also need an API to call to command the card to capture as needed.

Thanks, Mark.

Subject: HP 420, Mandrake 7.0 printer problem
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 01:07:08 GMT

I am running Mandrake 7.0 on a dual boot compak 5070 with a 350mhz celaron
processor. I have a HP 420C printer, the printer's connected to the machine
via a Mustek 600CP scanner which is connected to the parallel port (I
haven't ventured to check compatability or run the scanner under linux yet).
The printer works fine when operating in Windows 98, however I cannot get
the printer to work under linux. I have used printtool to configure the
printer and filter, but to know avail. When I do a tunelp sometimes I get
that the printer is online and the IRQ that it is using, other times after I
have tried to send a job to the printer it is stating that the printer is
busy. I have shutdown and mannually restarted LPD, and when I send a job to
the printer it appears that the machine thinks that the job is completing;
because the light on the printer begins to blink as if it is accepting the
job but I never get any output (whether working from the command line, or in
a program such as KFM or Netscape). Any and all serious help suggestions
can be emailed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

THANKS ALOT ALL!!!!!!!

(I'm new to linux)
I have x 4.0.1 with the GLX.tar.gz and the kernel from the site.
any help would be appreciated.

I was wondering how you installed the drivers for the geforce?
the manual supplied with the dirvers is too complicated for me as I just
installed the os 2 weeks ago. since them I've been forced to use an old
matrox card, a far cry form the geforce!
any help would be appreciated and if you do reply, please do so in very
simple terms.

Since you're installing Mandrake 7.1, the 1024 cylinder limit is a
non-factor. Why? It uses grub for its bootloader, so no 1024 cylinder

I have had zero luck finding a Linux driver for the D-Link DFE-550TX 10/100
Ethernet PCI NIC. It uses a chipset from Enable Semiconductor (now part of
Lucent), unlike all of D-Link's other cards. Has anyone ever succeeded in
getting this card to work with Linux? I am awaiting word from D-Link tech
support but I'm not too hopeful...

Run your X configuration program (Xconfigurator, SaX, XF86Setup,
xf86config) and when this program asks you what kind of mouse you have,
tell it. Every PS/2 mouse should work with the "PS/2" protocol as long
as you specify the correct number of buttons (usually 3; the wheel is
usually used as button 2.) If you have an MS Intellimouse, you could
try specifying "IMPS/2" as the protocol, which will let you use the
mousewheel in conjunction with the "imwheel" program.

BTW, every X configuration program should be able to work just fine even
if your mouse isn't recognized. Use Tab and/or the arrow keys to move
around and Space to select an option...

Subject: laptop hardware re-detection problems laptops? (e.g. Portege 3480)
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 00:11:16 -0400

I installed redhat6.2 on a Toshiba Portege 3480 recently. This
machine has a USB floppy (luckily it can be turned in legacy mode
so one can install linux from floppy), but no CDROM. For bizarre
reasons I was not able to get the install program to *use* the
PCMCIA external CDROM (it would detect it though), so I wind up
using a jaz drive.

The problem I then ran into is a conceptual one. Redhat now comes with
kudzu, which detects current hardware and compares it with the previous
boot.

This laptop has two peculariaties: the USB floppy and an ethernet port
on the port extender. If the machine is not booted with the USB floppy,
any subsequent "hot-swap" won't be able to talk to the floppy. I don't
see a solution to this.....

Simimarly, if one boots with the ethernet (i.e. port extender)
online, it works ok, but for one I was not able to figure out how to
talk to a PCMCIA ethernet card when this other (port extender) ethernet
was enabled. Secondly, i was not able to reliably talk to the
port-extender ethernet card after a suspend.

So, the solution right now is:

        - don't boot with port extender, or at least don't
allow the eepro100 port extender ethernet to be added
to the hardware profile by kudzu
        - make sure the floppy drive is online during boot, so the
           floppy can be used.

Is this a serious linux problem? Certain devices that are only
present on port-extenders (e.g. the ethernet in this case) with which
the machine was not booted?

A little advice:

1. Make a detailed list of all hardware you have, including
settings. Also include BIOS settings.
2. Read a little about stuff you don't understand, then proceed.
3. Have a pencil and paper handy to record what happens, plus all
the information that springs forth during the install that will
be useful later.

OR

Just stick the CD in and go for it. In case of troubles, goto
step #1 above.

Subject: Xircom RealPort pc card loses link
From: Mark Aufflick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 04:35:42 GMT

Hi all,

I have a troublesome Xircom realport REM56G-100 (combo 56k & 10/100 realport
16 bit pcmcia card)

I have used a few of the hacks suggested in this newsgroup to make the card
get initialised properly every startup, so the card works reliably after
startup or after card insertion, but after random periods (say 3 hours) the
card stops SENDING link. The link light on the card glows showing it is
receiving link, but the link light on the hub goes out, showing that it is
no longer receiving link. Needless to say the hub works fine for other
devices and I have tried different ports on the hub with the same result.

If I perform the following magic to restart the card I get link and
connectivity back - remove one of the steps and the magic stops:

 /sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
 /sbin/cardctl eject
 wait for double beep
 physically eject card
 re-insert card
 wait for double beep

I am using a 10BaseT hub, the IP is configured via DHCP using dhcpd - but I
have tried using a static IP with exactly the same problem.

My System is based on RedHat 6.1, but I have post-installed pcmcia-cs 3.1.20
which "reduces" the problems with my Xircom card!

My laptop is a Thinkpad 600E

Any suggestions would be great as I have run out of avenues!

Cheers,

Mark Aufflick.

http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodems.html for the modem. Most newer
computers come with "Winmodems" (LOSEmodems, that is) which are
impossible to get working under Linux *unless* they have the Lucent
chipset. If it is a LoseModem, sell it to a stupid person and go buy a
Real Modem (defined as an external modem that connects to the serial
[not USB!] port.)

The printer isn't even listed on http://linuxprinting.org/ . Sadly,
many printers these days are "Winprinters" that will not work with
anything but Windoze, and many other printers are impossible to get
going because manufacturers refuse to release the specs for the printer
control language. (RMS started the whole Free Software thing in part
because of a closed-source printer driver... you're not alone here.)
