Subject: Q: mem=64M in lilo.conf (dangerous???)
Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 00:38:51 +0100

Hi everybody,

I have installed Debian Linux on my Gateway Solo with 64Mb RAM.
I've just seen that it uses only 16Mb RAM and I can't use some
software (MuPAD,....) which may take a lot of memory.

I've seen in a documentation (but it was not clear), that I
could add the parameter mem=64M somewhere in my
lilo.conf file, but that it could be dangerous sometimes.

Does someone know if this command is rather safe
and what is precisely the syntax I should add in my
lilo.conf file (which I use to launch Linux or Windows).

Thanks by advance and sorry if the question has already
been raised (I guess so...).

For me, when I did that with 2.0.36, the kernel just crashed when it tried
to power down. I haven't tried it with 2.2.x, ---- anyway I think its success
depends on the BIOS of the machine.

Hi!

How to setup Epson Stylus Color 600 under Slackware?
I can print ASCII only using lpr.
I have tried aps-4.9.tgz from "contrib" but something
was wrong and it did not work for me.
Please, no RPM!

Thanks a lot in advance.

I am stuck,

I have two Dell poweredge XE 590 who are not able to boot from the RH 5.2
boot diskettes.
I have made several RH 5.2 boot floppies from both the web and cd's but
no luck
Here's what happens :
I can see the Welcome to Redhat Linux bootmessage, I can switch between
screen(F1,F2,F3,F5,F6). After I hit enter, I see :
Loading initrd.img...
Then the sreen starts scrolling and after a few seconds the monitor switches
off.

My system :
Dell PowerEdge XE 5990
Intel Pentium 90
64M memory
On-board NCR 53C810 SCSI hostadapter
Adaptec AHA-1740 Eisa SCSI hostadapter
ATI68800AX videocard

The bootdiskettes work perfectly well on a Dell optiplex, so I assume there's
nothing wrong with the diskettes. Also RH 4.2 installed like a charm!

You could mount the ms filesystem as indicated by others here, or you
could use the mtools package. Mtools allows reading, writing,
directory listing and more from Linux, without loss of lfns and
without mounting the ms filesystem. It's quick and it works well. I'm
not sure of the package name, but give me an email holler and I'll

Hello all,

I'm new to this group, so I hope this post is on topic.

I'm a freelance webmaster (among other things) and I've got a big
presentation on Wednesday. If things go well, it will probably be time
to bite the bullet and get my own server.

I'm looking to build something inexpensive (under $1000), yet stable and
serviceable. I have some experience with Linux. I installed it my WIN95
machine at home so the wife could do MUSH development (don't ask).

My server will most likely run the following software:

Linux (maybe Red Hat?)
Apache Web Server
mSQL
PERL
Qpopper
Sendmail

The machine will host between 5 and 10 domains that will get light to
moderate (less than 1GB/month) traffic and a POP3 server.

So, given all this, here are my questions:

1) What would you say is the minimum CPU I would need (AMD K6-2?
Celeron?)

2) What is a good, stable motherboard to use for this purpose

3) Can I get away with using an IDE hard drive and get acceptable
performance.

4) Which NIC (10/100 base T) works best with Linux?

5) Any other stuff I'm overlooking?

Thanks!

In console I try 'gpm -t ps2 -m /dev/psaux', but no sing of life from

Kvin,

There is an early development Banshee server for XFree86 that I have
found to be very stable (no crashes yet with a version from
early Feb.) on my sytem.

This server is being developed by Daryll Strauss, who to 3Dfx is the
single contact point for 3Dfx support under Linux, and who
has developed all the support for other 3Dfx cards under Linux. For
status on this server, and a link to the most recent version,
please see Daryll's status page at:

http://glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html

I'd certainly recommend giving the most recent development version of
this a try. It doesn't have 3-D support yet, or full 2-D
acceleration, but it is pretty fast and supports high resolutions with
lots of colors. I think you'll be rather pleased!

I had a terrible weekend (last two in fact) trying to get this card to work.

Now, I know I can ask somebody.

BTW, I did download XFree86 3.3.3.1.

Still I cannot find Velocity 4400 in the list of cards.

On top of this Xconfigurator is dying on me giving a segmentation

I can do the setup using XF86Setup though.

What card do I choose? "My Video Card"
Then choose the chipset to be "Riva TNT"

I could not find Riva TNT.

Please help. I am going crazy with this problem.

I had the same problem until I upgraded to dhcpcd 1.3. Go to freshmeat.net
and search for "dhcpcd" you can download the latest version there.

I know that if you try installing with Redhat, druid disk is sure to give you the
"primary partition
too big" error :) if your trying to install it alongside windows, or any other os I
suppose

Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 06:48:11 GMT

I have installed Linux 5.2 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000. I have made all the
suggested upgrades. I am having problems with the PCMCIA Card services
(3.0.5). I get them to start, detect the card. I can even get the card to
activate. The problem comes in when ever I want to use the card. It doesn't
work!!!

According to everything I can find on the net, the driver is still under
development. Has anyone got this combo to work?? I would appreciate any help
or ideas. I have tapped out all of my local resources.

No shit, thanks for the post. Good think I haven't bothered with Win98.

What's the trick to getting stereo output from a WinTV, model 401 Bt878
with FM, dbx stereo. It has the TDA9850 sound chip on it.

I am using the Hauppauge new driver, but can't seem to get it to
recognize
stereo, both FM and TV.

Any ideas? Using the linux 2.2.0 kernel driver, also tried Bttv v0.6.3,
same results.
