I've a Compaq Presario 1200 XL 109 with 64MB/6Gb, and I'm running Red
Hat 6.1 kernel 2.2.14. The installation was not without its problems,
videocard (cyberblade i7, I think the refresh rates of the LCD) and
sound (via686 onboard) where the problem area's. But I got a working
XFree86.conf from the internet, solved that one in 15 minutes. The
soundcard was recognized by the red hat oss drivers, but didn't work,
giving a error message 'device busy'. I replaced the sounddrivers
with latest alsa sounddrivers 0.5.9 (worked not with earlier versions),
now the sound is working great. Even the Lucent winmodem is working with
a module I got from the internet (ltmod.o). 32Mb is a little bit on the
low side ,I think mine is underpowered in that area too, But then again
I'm a developer of medical image manipulation programs and I'm used to
lots of ram. To give a better answer, when I boot my laptop with Linux
(dual boot) using helix gnome (windowmanager sawfish), it's using 24MB
of the ram. Then the videocard is using 4MB, that is together 28 MB, so
you would have 4Mb of free ram. Don't forget that the recommended
minimum ram for windows98 is also 64 Mb, and that is a toy OS IMHO.

I've also a 6GB harddisk, my configuration looks like this:
2 GB windows 98
2 GB linux
2 GB fat16 partition for data, recognized both by windows98 and Linux

M.Geerlings

first thing to do is to get the 3c509 out of the PnP mode.
3com has 2 installation diskettes on their site. boot from your windows
bootdisk and use the second 3com install disk to run 3c5x9cfg.exe. make
sure you disable pnp and reboot. first write down the IRQ and IO
settings!

second thing to do is to setup your internet-settings in RH. i don't
remember what the programme is called, but it's that handy config tool
that comes with RedHat. (what's it called again?)
remember to fill in the io-adress like this: io=0x300 (substitute 300
with the actual io. IRQ is optional as you will see.

if you filled it al in correctly, you should be able to ping your
localhost (no response? NiC is not properly installed, check the io).

good luck!

Subject: 2 SCSI cards in one machine

I have a Linux computer running Caldera OpenLinux 2.3. It has been
running fine for over a year with one Adaptec 2940 SCSI card with 5 SCSI
hard drives attached. We have added a 2nd Adaptec 2930 SCSI card with a
SCSI 8mm tape drive. At boot the BIOS for both drives is recognized as
well as all of the devices. One Hard drive SCSI card is on irq 11 and
the tape SCSI card is on irq 5. There are no device conflicts for irqs.
There are no device conflicts for i/o ports.

Linux does not see the 2nd SCSI controller, but it sees the first one. I
do a "dmesg" and there is no mention of the second controller.

There are no additional LILO boot parms for the Adaptec aic78xx driver
regarding irqs and i/o ports. Currently the SCSI driver for the
controller is being loaded as a module. Is there anything that I can do
to get the 2nd controller to be recognized by the kernel?

sndconfig doesn't want to set up my CMI8330 chipset, anyone any ideas? The
error I'm getting refers to "ad1816.o" or something similar (sorry, I'm at
work and not at the relevant computer at the moment. Just thought I'd try a
quick enquiry between hectic moments.

No matter what I do sndconfig just sits there and tells me that something is
already in use (to do with the file mentioned above). Even if I remove all
the sound drivers using modprobe, it still won't do anything useful. I did
have an OSS commercial driver for it but I lost the licence file. I saw the
option in sndconfig and thought I'd have a go. Guess I thought wrong.

Any help appreciated

Here's another trick. Copy everything from /etc/skel/.kde/Templates into your
~/.kde/Templates folder, then make sure you own the files by running a console
and entering the following:

  chown myname.myname ~/.kde/Templates/*

substituting your user name for "myname" in the above, and you should find a few
more options on your desktop rignt-click menu.

ifconfig shows, that everything is o'key - the card is identified by the
system and adress is assing to this card:

eth0: Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:AF:C8:E1:6F inet addr:192.168.12.127

But nothing arrives, if I try to ping some computer from this network. Ping

Then, it doesn't work at all since 2 days. And now, I don't know what I

I've had 2 SCSI controllers on one machine in the past, but they were
from different companies (Buslogic and Adaptec), and one was an ISA
card, the other a PCI card. Because I was loading different low level
drivers, I was able to pass parameters to the 2nd driver in the insmod
call to tell it where the 2nd card was. The 2nd card was only used as
a generic device (for a scanner) and invoked as /dev/sgd when I did a
scan using SANE.

Hope that helps.

Has anyone had any experience with the Intel AC97 codec (mother board
built-in):
When ever I start esd, I get the message "/dev/dsp: dno such device".
The lspci -n and lspci -vv show there is an Intel AC97 codec installed

No audio capability yet.
Everything seems to be built in the kernel (make xconfig) for audio.

Been messing with this for 2 months now and getting frustrated.

Hi there,

just go int /proc directory and check CPU info. If you will not find
information
about cache (it will reported as 0) it will mean that system did not
recognize it.
If it will not equal 0MB or 0KB it will mean that sysinfo misreport
information

That's wrong - "make mrproper" will, amongst other things, remove
".config", which contains all your configuration information that you
configured during "make menuconfig"!

Try "make clean" here instead.

Hi there,

first question which I'd like to ask "Do you able to use drive at all in
SuSE 6.4?"
if yes, I guess that they could change default block size for tape
drive.
You can figure out block size with dd command:

dd if=/dev/nst0 of=/tmp/file

it should report block size.
But I warned by "device busy" message. It seems to me that system
do not getting access to tapedrive. As you been using this drive on this

computer I exclude possibility of hardware conflict. I am sorry but
I never used SuSE. In Redhat I'd check that st.o module compiled
and loaded or compiled into kernel.

NOTE: Just for case I'd check BIOS PnP OS option and if it "on" I would
disable it. In most case it is source of "device busy" but can not say
it
about tapedrive.

The problem is that the kernel can't load the aic7xxx module and therefor=
e
can't access your SCSI disk. I usually compile any disk drivers into the
kernel instead of compiling them as modules. So when you do a 'make
menuconfig', change the option for aic7xxx support to "Yes" instead of
module. Also, do a 'make clean' instead of 'make mrproper'.
