Duanne, got cdrecord to find the the CDWriter. What was happening was I
was using a Linux Boot disk for my Dual Boot system. I was changing the
lilo.conf but it wasn't working... I noticed you said to use sbin/lilo
after changes have been made to lilo.conf. I guess it wasn't accepting
the changes on my boot disk. I switched to using lilo from the hard
drive and it works. Now, I can't get back to Windows becuase somehow
lilo will not boot me into dos no matter how I configure it. (but tha
t's a seperate problem).
My question is this. When I try to blank a CDRW using CDRToaster I get
a "incompatable medium" error. When I try to burn a disk I get.
cdrecord: Premature EOF on stdin
cdrecord: Input buffer error, aborting
cdrecord: fifo had 1 puts and 0 gets
cdrecord: fifo was 0 times empty and 0 time full, min fill was 100%
Is this a problem with the type of disk or the hardware setup?
cdrecord recognizes the HP 8100... I'm using CompUSA brand CD
recordable disks.

Mount the new drive with the new big partition created, onto
/mnt and use:
find /usr -print|cpio -pdmv /mnt
find /etc -print|cpio -pdmv /mnt

to move each subdirectory and file in the / (root) over to the new drive.

Hello,
as far as I know you can't send something direct to the lexmark 5700.
This is (windows spoken) a gui printer, that means it only understand
some sort of graphik language. On the other hand the permission denied
comes from your linux system and should be correct if you have done
this as normal user.

If you wait a few minutes, does it recover? It always does when

No. It's because you're overloading your SCSI bus, not because of a
drive failure. See below.

You've got four devices on a single SCSI bus. How much cable do you
have between them all? Probably quite a bit.
> (scsi0:0:0:0)

> ....
The 40M/s rate means Ultra-Wide.
Ultra-Wide SCSI has a cable-length limit of 3m (approximately 9.8 feet)
with 1-4 devices attached. The limit drops to 1.5m (approximately 4.9
feet) when 5-8 devices are attached.
(Source: ftp://ftp.t10.org/t10/drafts/spi2/spi2r20b.pdf, page 51)
If you exceed the limit (or even come close to it, in my experience),
your SCSI bus becomes unreliable. The unreliability will increase when
the bus is under stress (such as when you write a lot of data to a
device.)
> (scsi0:0:1:0)
> Device using Wide/Sync transfers at 40.0 MByte/sec, offset 31
> ....
>
> (scsi0:0:2:0)

> Device using Narrow/Sync transfers at 10.0 MByte/sec, offset 15
> ....
Unless you've got some very unusual cables, I'm certain that you've got
more than 3m of cable in there. And if not all of your cables conform
to the SCSI spec, then your actual limit may even be shorter. (A lot of
people don't recommend more than 1.5m on an Ultra-Wide bus, regardless
of the number of devices.)
IMO, you've got a few choices here:
1: Slow down your SCSI bus. The SCSISelect program (press CTRL-A during
POST) can be used to force your Ultra-Wide devices to run at
Fast-Wide speeds. You should be able to use longer cables at the
slower speeds.
2: Get another SCSI card. If you move two devices to another Ultra-Wide
card, you may be able to get your cable lengths for each bus under
the limit - at which point they should all run reliably.
3: If your drives support LVD (Ultra2, Ultra3 and Ultra160 do), then you
can get a SCSI card that also supports LVD. You can then move all
your hard drives to that card. According to
ftp://ftp.t10.org/t10/drafts/spi2/spi2r20b.pdf (page 52),
differential busses have a 25m limit (until you go to Fast-40
(Ultra2) speeds. (Although most vendors cite a 12m limit for LVD,
regardless of the speed.)
If you do this, however, do not get rid of your original SCSI card -
you'll want it for any non-LVD devices. If you mix LVD and non-LVD
devices on a single bus, the bus will run in non-LVD mode - meaning
you'll be back to the same (short) limits you are trying to get away
from.
If you don't have any spare slots, you can get dual-channel SCSI
cards (like Adaptec's 39xx series). This way, you'll get two busses
on a single PCI card.
I realize that none of these are what you want to hear, but there's not
too much choice in the matter. Unfortunately, these cable-length limits
are real limits and are not just marketing hype. When you exceed them,
SCSI becomes unreliable.
Good luck.

Subject: Installation fails for Adaptec (AIC7880) SCSI Controller
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 20:57:27 +0200
All
I am trying to install RH 6.2 on a IBM PC 330 Server which uses an
Adaptec SCSI controller and an IBM ServeRaid Raid controller. It seems
as if the SCSI controller driver is not loaded correctly.
Problem:
I boot from the CD and after the kernel loaded it says AIC7xxx loading.
Thereafter, it asks which installation medium to use; CDROM or Hard
Drive. I then choose CDROM and it asks for SCSI or Other. I select SCSI
(it is a SCSI CDROM). Then it presents a list of driver options, but
nothing for CDROM's. Instead it looks like SCSI controller cards
-without the AIC7xxx in the list. No matter what I select it just goes
back to the list again.
If I select the Hard Drive for installation medium it does exactly the
same as with the CDROM.
What I have tried:
1. I downloaded the latest boot image from Redhat.com which includes the
latest ServeRaid driver. It changes nothing.
2. I downloaded the latest AIC7xxx driver from RedHat. It still asks for
a CDROM driver, but this time the AIC7xxx driver is included in the
list. I select it. It then loads and show CD is initialising, but then
it goes back to the driver list and this driver is not their anymore.
>From there on it is exactly the same as described in the problem above.
The System:
Server Type: IMB PC server 330
SCSI controller: AIC7880 chipset. I don't know which AHA card. but I
think it is AHA-294x -that is what MS NT reports.
Raid Controller: IBM ServeRaid.
CDROM: Plextor SCSI, PX20TSI
Tape Drive: SCSI. I don't know which type.
SCSI DEVICE ID: The card was at 7. I changed it to 0. It reports no
other devices.
CPU: Pentium 2.
It is currently running MS NT.
Other remarks:
1. I have not checked the bios version yet. According to RedHat.com I
need version 3.60 or higher to work with the latest ServeRaid driver.
2. I have changed the terminations in the SCSI configuration utility to
active at both ends.
3. I disabled sync and disconnect for SCSI peripherals.
4. I have changed the CARD Device ID from 7 to 0, as mentioned.
5. When it boots it does report SCSI devices: 4 logical drives, CDROM
and Tape drive.
6. When I boot from CD -just before it reads the CD- it reports: No
SCSI boot devices found.
Questions:
1. Does anybody know how top solve this?
2. How can I get more diagnostic information from the setup program.
3. If the SCSI Controller driver loaded correctly, is it necessary to
load drivers for SCSI CDROM's, or SCSI tape drives.

Does it have an i810 chipset? I have a machine that does, and the i810
video stuff takes some of the system RAM for itself, so you can't tell Linux
to take the entire chunk of RAM. I used:
append="mem=127M"
and it worked fine, however that machine will never run X. If you need to
run a GUI, then you'll probably want to leave more than a meg for the video.
