I was looking around and found some high quality USB audio AD/DA
converters. I would like to get one for the purpose of doing some
portable digital recording. I am interested in manual and autonomous
recording of birds and other wildlife.

My question is should I try to find a PCMCIA to USB card, or do you
think this is a dead end to get this sort of device running under
Linux? Would it be easer to find a used laptop with USB already built
in and get that to run with Linux?

I have a custom built system running rather well, but crashes now and
then. It hangs only in X (Xfree86 3.3.6). At first I thought it must
be the video card, so I replaced my ATI Xpert 128 with a Matrox
Millenium G400 Max. Soon after I installed it, the system crashed
again.
Many, but not all of the crashes seem clearly related to SCSI periperal
access. I have an Adaptec 29160 installed in a 32-bit PCI slot. Could
this be the culprit? The card is sensed smoothly, and usually works
fine. Might it be the drivers for the card?
        I use Redhat 6.2 with a rebuilt 2.2.16 kernel, including AIC-9xxx
support, "linear" is set in lilo.conf, I have a Tyan Tiger 133
motherboard, with 256MB of Crucial PC133 and a Pentium 800EB installed.
var/log/messages says nothing about the time of the crash.
        Do I have SCSI problems?
        Thanks in advance.
Personal e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be extremely helpful.

Subject: Re: Compaq deskpro erratic clock with RH6.0
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 15:10:04 GMT

Hi:

I had a similar problem on a desktop. I had enabled some auto-power-off
feature in the BIOS. It would keep Linux loaded and when you moved the
mouse or pressed a key, it would come back to life. However, while it was
snoozing, NOTHING functioned (the computer was, for all practical purposes,
off).

In particular, it would not keep time while asleep. When I then moved the
mouse or pressed a key, it came up with the time it went to sleep at, rather
than the current time. So I thought my clock was totally messed up. When I
went on MediaOne, I had to disable the auto-power-off feature to keep my
InterNet connection accessible from the outside. Coincidentally, that fixed my
clock problem as well.

This might not help, but sometimes you need to look for an answer where you
least suspect it.

I have just compiled and installed kernel 2.2.17-17mdk with support for
SoundBlaster Live! (in the kernel, not as a module). When the kernel
boots, it finds the card and offers a reassuring pop! on the speakers.
But when I try to use the card (with, say, mpg123) I get an error
message: Can't open /dev/dsp! I don't have this problem with earlier
flavours of the 2.2.17 kernel that offer native support for the Live!
card. What's up? Is this a file permission issue?

Baffled in Vancouver.

Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 15:22:22 GMT

Hi:

Not all that easy, I believe. It seems easy, though. There should be a number
of files in the /dev directory:

/dev/devicves
/dev/ioports
/dev/interrupts
/dev/dma (or something like that)

These supposedly contain all the information you could possibly ever want.
What I don't know is how accurate this is. I am saying this because I use
isapnp, which checks on these files and on isapnp.gone. I am using an IO
that is listed in neither of these places, yet, isapnp does not let me assign
this IO.

By the way, once you figured out what IRQs, IOs and DMAs are being used,
I believe your best bet will be to use isapnp to actually change these (in a
very limited manner, with much praying). Chances are it was installed when you
first installed your system. If not, scour the web for the isapnp website.

Anyway, for what it's worth. Good Luck.

I've had this problem...and I'm sure there's a better solution, but I ended
up just doing (as root)
chmod 777 /dev/dsp*

I also did mix* (so I could access the mixer) and midi* (just in case).

So far, it's worked just fine. I'm sure it's a security risk somehow, but
as this is a single-user system , I'm not concerned.

My setup is the opposite, my CD drive is /dev/hdc, and the CDRW is /dev/hdd.
That shouldn't make any real difference, though.

I went a different route. In one of my initialization scripts
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules, I do the following:
/sbin/modprobe ide-cd
/sbin/modprobe aic7xxx
/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi

and in /etc/modules.conf, I have
options ide-cd ignore=hdd (this would have to be ignore=hdc for you, of
course). When I'm done booting, I see the following when I do an lsmod:

You don't really explain what you mean by "I can only use ide-cd or ide-scsi
at any point in time". How are you trying to mount the devices? What
device names (/dev/???) are you trying to use? The CDRW can be referenced
at least two ways: /dev/scd? and /dev/sr? . If you're using mkisofs and
cdrecord, I believe it also uses /dev/sg? for it as a character device.

What's the problem? This card is one of the first cards supported by

have you done so far to get it working? You obviously haven't read the

The Seagate NS-20 (aka TR-5, 10GB native, 20GB compressed)
ATAPI drive I'm using is fine for my needs and runs with the
ide-tape module. There's no need for ide-scsi if you
re-compile your kernel to support ATAPI Tape Devices. It
cost about $430 Canadian; that's under $300 U.S.

The tape isn't write protected, is it? My Seagate tape
drive chokes when the little red tab on the Travan tapes is
set to "Locked". Obviously I can't write to locked tapes,
but I can't even *read* them. Any mt command gives an
input/output error. (Took me a half hour to figure that out
when I first tried to restore from a locked tape. Checked
drivers, software, everything but that stupid little tab!)
