During the text install I selected Gnome Workstation...
There wasn't an option to make a boot disk
I'll try it again...

I cannot find this in the RH 6.1 docs that are on the CD, but I believe at
the boot prompt you enter "linux text" like this:
boot: linux text
Your video chip is not supported by XFree86 in RH 6.1 by default, but
could be configured manually as 4 MB Neomagic (even though it is 6 MB)
with the SVGA server or by compiling framebuffer support into the kernel
and using the FB server. For a monitor selection try LCD 1024x768 or
whatever your resolution is.

You either need a boot floppy, a primary /boot partition entirely below
cyl 1024 or a newer version of LILO that can boot beyond that. If you
have not written anything on your second FAT partition yet, you could
remove it and put it farther back or in an extended partition. Info on
how I partitioned the 9 GB drive on my F450 is at
http://www.de-srv.com/linux/sonyF450.html
When you get this all figured out, it would be helpful to write up your
own experiences to link from the Linux Laptop home page.

Dear all,
I am to buy a new machine, and was wondering if expert users like you
had the idea to make a FAQ or special recommandations people like me
could rely on.
Especially, I am willing to find a document listing supported
material. Video is a tricky one. Could you please point out the neat
places to visit or give advices based on your own valuable experience.
Best regards.

Clarification: No sound, either, and from what I have been able to
determine, I will need a new sound card & modem to convert the
Pavilion to a real Linux box. Seems the Rockwell hardware is 100%
undocumented & the maker would rather not have Linux support.

Eric,
I use an Optra E310 at both home and work. In fact, I used to use it
at work with Slackware 7.0. I used apsfilterconfig to set up the
/etc/printcap file; however, the printer should work with a generic
postscript setup -- possibly your system already has a generic printcap.
If you wish to use apsfilter, which I would advise, as it makes filters
that format postscript, plain text, and raw data correctly, simply run
"apsfilterconfig" and answer the questions. When complete, you should
be able to use lpr to print anything.

Samba documentation is abundant at www.samba.org. In fact, if you
downloaded the source, you should have O'Reilly's entire book, Using
Samba. However, I can perhaps give you some direction. (Although it
should be known that this list is not intended to address only software
issues).
First, how did you obtain samba? Did you download it, and what type of
package did you download -- source, rpm, tgz, deb, etc. for specific
distributions of Linux. Chances are, if you received a pre-packaged
one, simply installing it will set most everything up. You will need to
customize the smb.conf file, wherever that may be. I prefer to use SWAT
-- the web interface for samba. If configured correctly, using
http://(your address here):901 should access a very intuitive interface.
What I have just written is all very general. If you need more
specifics, explain where you are at with the install. Also, I would
advise downloading Using Samba from
http://us4.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/using_samba.tar.gz
run:
tar zxvf using_samba.tar.gz
on the file, then it should be browseable from netscape or whatever you
use.
Hope this helps

Okay, thanks Michael for your help, and for being so prompt to answer!
However, isn't the Hardware-HOWTO a bit old? Isn't it updated more
often. It is one year and three days old now. Seems to me there's been
a few moves in the hardware industry in between...
I'm gonna check that carefully.
Thanks again.

It sounds like you may have had some BIOS overlay software in the
MBR that got over-written when you redid the MBR. Without that,
the BIOS on your machine is only able to see up to cylinder 1024
(about 504MB). There are a few things you could try. If you
know what overlay software you had, you could reinstall it and
see if you find your lost partitions. You could replace your HD
controller with a newer one that has an on-board BIOS capable of
LBA to see past physical cylinder 1024. Or you could
repartition, keeping all your bootable partitions below 1024
cylinders. The rest of the space would be usable as additional
partitions after you have booted up.
If it were up to me, I'd spring for the new controller. Then you
shouldn't have a size restriction either.

Hello,
I just assembled a quite nice machine and am having problems getting linux
on it. I'm hoping someone has come across a similar problem and might be
able to help. This is my system:
Asus A7V Motherboard with an AMD Athlon 800 processor (Bios 1.0.3)
Tekram DC-315U SCSI Controller
SCSI CD-ROM (pretty generic; I forgot the name)
Generic floppy
IBM UDMA100 15Gb Hard Drive
Matrox Millenium G400 Graphics Card
Soundblaster 16 Audio Card
I've tried to get RedHat6.2 working (both by SCSI CD-ROM and BOOT
floppy). Unfortunately, it keeps on responding with "BOOT FAILED: PLEASE
INSERT SYSTEM DRIVE" (or something very similar). Yuk! I have a version of
slackware too which doesn't seem to work either.
I've installed Linux on several systems (including Alpha and PPC), but
I've never had difficulties this early in the process. Very frustrating.
Peace and Luck!

Sorry, haven't found anything more up to date.
Anyway, I guess good friends with proper knowledge
are often an even better place to start from when searching
for new hardware.
It's also a good idea to check newsgroups, faqs, etc for
separating well known troublemakers from valueable stuff
that has proven to work.

Okay, huh, is there something especially troublemaking in the following:
PIII 800Mhz, bus at 133Mhz
Voodoo or Matrox graphics card
SDRam memory at 144Mhz
DFI mother board
Oh, by the way, if you happen to know the difference between AGP and PCI,
that'd be a good bit of info. Nowhere can I grab the difference, if any of
if even relevant.
And *Thanks* --again--

I am using a Tyan Tiger 100 mobo with 2 P3 600 MHz. Don't know how high
the CPU speeds can go with this mobo. It is 100MHz FSB and I have 256
