I don't know what linux you are running, on my system (RH6.2) the init
string
is in the CHAT script named

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0

yours may be in a different directory.

My flashy new PC appears to have come with a Fujitsu/Siemens 8x4x32x
CD writer. I can use it to read CDs with no trouble, but the cdrecord
compatibility list doesn't mention it at all... not as "supported",
not as "unsupported", not even as "may be supported one day". Has
anyone used this drive for burning under Linux yet?

Be aware that switches for dump is a little "unnatural" i guess
you should do :
dump -0usf 1000000 /dev/st0 /home/ftp/mp3z

but do check your manpage first !

You could try cdrtoaster. This is a small (about 15Kb) and fairly basic
TCL/TK front end to cdrecord, but it lets you see what the parameters to
cdrecord are, and it shows the cdrecord output during the burn. I have a
SCSI Yamaha 8424 which I run at 4 times. No problems burning even on cheap
disks.

I haven't tried xcdroast so I don't know how much it shows you about what is
happening during the burn. I assume it doesn't show much, as if it did you
would see what cdrecord was using, as opposed to what you wanted.

There are plenty of other cd burners out there - see what you can find.

Hope this is useful.

If you also have the need for accessing the 'net from each of those
systems through a single ISP, I recommend the SMC7004BR Barricade. This
is much more than a hub although it serves that purpose.

        http://www.smc.com

I am not affiliated with SMC in any way other than as a VERY satisfied
customer. I have one installed in my home network, supporting a Windows
system, a Linux box, and an old NeXT. It work beautifully, sharing my
single ISP among all three simultaneously while giving me complete
connectivity across all of my systems.

I have a HP deskjet 815c usb printer.
But when printing a test page, I get the error message
"cannot open '/dev/usblp0' - 'Permission denied'"

I set up a device node entry, using the following command:
mknod /dev/usblp0 c 180 0

Then I used the printtool to install my printer.
After that my printcap file looks like this:

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL ppa 600x600 letter {} {HP DeskJet 820} ppa820b1 {}
lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\

        :lp=/dev/usblp0:\

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

AFAIK, there is no such thing as a generic "AC'97" sound driver for
Linux; you must still locate a driver for your specific chipset.
"SoundBlaster-compatible" is also pretty much meaningless in Linux, with
one or two exceptions. You'll need to research what hardware that
motherboard uses. Many AC'97 sound setups in motherboards rely on the
VIA 82c686a chipset, which is built into several VIA motherboard
chipsets. This is supposed to work with the driver in recent 2.2.x and
2.4.0-test kernels, but most people report serious problems with it. In
practice, this works much better with the ALSA driver
(http://www.alsa-project.org), which is a nuisance to install, but works
pretty well once running.

You need the modules from Alsa.

snd-card-intel8x0.o for (you guessed it) intel chipsets or
snd-card-via686a.o for via chipsets.

Sorry to be kind of useless here, but I haven't had to play with this
sort of thing before. Does it look okay? What exactly should I be
looking for in terms of potential problems?

Cheers,
Andrew

P.S.: Again, my /etc/hosts looks like

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain Mintaka
130.15.26.39 lola lola.phy.queensu.ca

|Andrew,
|
|I had a somewhat similar problem. Try the following diagnostic checks:
|
| ifconfig to verify your eth0 setup
| route -e or -n to verify routing
| review your communication setup files
|
| Now, most likely everything above will be okay. So,
| setup to telnet into your linux box. Just before you telnet in start
|the tcpdump facility. Then do a
| telnet session and watch what is going on. This little facility can
|show who's at fault. When I had
| the dump I was able to show the cable modem folks the problem and
they, |when they saw it
| with their own eyes, immediatly gave me a fix. Knowledge is power.

Thanks for the help, but I'm not having trouble booting. I'm booting
off /dev/hda, which is detected fine.

I'm just having trouble with Linux throwing away the tail end of a long
string of boot options. For example, the string:
  append="hde=7473,255,63 hdg=7473,255,63 hdi=7473,255,63 hdk=7473,255,63"
appears to be cut off to:
         "hde=7473,255,63 hdg=7473,255,63 hdi=7473,255

I have looked in init/main.c in the linux source directory to try to figure it
out. I did notice that there are limits on the number of parameters. Maybe
this is it...

Subject: IDE CD-RW (HP 9310i) workd with RH 6.2
Date: 5 Oct 2000 10:50:23 -0400

Hi,
I have been trying to make our IDE CD-RW (HP 9310i) work on
our Dell power edge 1300 series machine with 2 processors. It has
a factory installed Red Hat 6.2 operating system on it and the kernel
is 2.2.14-6.1.1. I read the CD-Writing How to in the /usr/doc/HOWTO
directory and here is what I did so far. I have to mention that
the CDRW is mounted on /dev/hdd and the machine can see it as a
CDROM. I can mount it and do a ls to see the content. But I want
to make it as a CD writer

edited /etc/conf.modules to add
 alias scd0 sr_mod # load sr_mod upon access of scd0
alias scsi_hostadaptor ide-scsi # SCSI host adaptor emulation
 options ide-cd ignore=hdd # if /dev/hdb is your CD-writer

recompiled the module as said in howto
  cd /usr/src/linux
  make menuconfig
   make dep
  make bzdisk
  make modules
  make modules_install

This process wrote the bZImage to my floppy. If I understood
correctly. The next step i sto boot the machine from the flopy
. But ther kernel went to Panic and got stuck there.

After restarting the machine without floppy. I looked at the
new modules library and I still can't see the moduless
scsi_mod.o and sr_mod.o in the SCSI directory .

cdrecord -scanbus commands shows only the two SCSI hard drives in the system.

I thought I followed everything the way I undestood. Am I missing
something. I would appreciate your help. You all seemed to be very
happy with CD-RW installation process. Please help me figure
out why my new kernel is going to panic.

Regards,

Prakashan
