Subject: BP6 + Mandrake + reboot problem
Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 23:08:14 GMT

I've had this problem since Mandrake 7.1, now
running LM8.0.

When I get into a console & su then do a reboot,
services shut down properly but then my machine "hangs".
Reset button does not work neither does power off. I have
to turn off the power supply, wait 6 secs, turn the
power supply on then use the "On" button. Everything
boots fine after this. "Restart" from WinME does not
cause this behavior. Anyone know what causes this?

MB: ABit BP6
CPU: dual 366Cel's overclocked to 550
RAM: 512M
OS: LM8.0

(It seems shutdown is being invoked with -h (runlevel 0)
rather than runlevel 6.)

Did you move to a different kernel version? If so, you'll have to
recompile alsa as well, against the new kernel.

If you are using alsa, the module you will want to load is
snd-card-ens1370. The alsa and kernel drivers are different, and its
totally possible that whatever you have isn't supported by the kernel
drivers (although I doubt it). Also, it is possible that you have an
ES1371 or 1373, in which case you will need to use the es1371 driver
(snd-card-ens1371 if you are using ALSA).

Hi,

I have an old Seagate CTT3200 floppy controller tape drive (Travan TR3) with
its own Conner 2MB/s controller card. I'd like to test it (and possibly use
it!) under RH7.1 and/or Mandrake 8.0.

Does anybody use a similar tape drive?? Any particular problems I should be
aware of??
Please don't suggest I use a SCSI drive instead, I already have a Sony DDS3
tape drive that works like a charm...just want to resurrect an old piece of
equipment.

Thanks in advance,

Roberto.

There is a difference between color memory and comparison,

I doubt it, even next to each other. Color memory, no way!

Try it with something better than a computer display.
Jaggies are the norm here. Also note that the color
rendition is highly dependant on the software.

If I'm going to carry a riser, I'll carry a keyboard. My
ThinkPad A21p has space to rest the palms, but it doesn't
keep me off the CNTL key.

When you'r not using WinBlows? I don't even want it when I
am! I don't like WinBlows specific hardware in any form.
The WB key is just another example.

CNTL-ESC is simple - right palm-left esc. Not a problem.
..don't need no stinkin' WinKey. My version works in OS/2
and Linux too.

Well, yes. "init 6" reboots the machine; "init 0" halts it. How are
you doing this reboot? "shutdown -r now" will do it, as will calling
/etc/rc.d/init.d/reboot or /sbin/reboot .

Automatic power-off on shutdown requires APM running. APM is not
SMP-safe, so it is disabled. This problem is not there in LoseME, as
LoseME does not support SMP.

IMHO, with modern distros, this config should work out of the box,
as there are the appropriate module(s) and device nodes by default.
One possible problem might be the controller card; IIRC most of these
cards are supported - but you might check the HW settings for I/O port
and IRQ, and might have to specify this to the "modprobe ftape" command.
If the card - and thus the drive - isn't recognized, you might have to
build a custom kernel in that case, after manually editing
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/ftape/Makefile (or are these settings
editable
by "make menuconfig" in the meantime ? - don't think so).
If you need to re-build the ftape driver, however, I'd highly recommend
you get the ftape-4.x source from freshmeat or similar, and use that
instead of the kernel-included driver, which is still V. 3.0.4 IIRC.
This promises more stability and possibly performance in some cases,
transparent compression, and introduces the facility to format tapes
in Linux by included utilities. Beware : the devices nodes with 4.x
have undergone some changes, but there's an included script to create
these.

> Does anybody use a similar tape drive?? Any particular problems I should be

My Seagate/Conner TST800 TR-1 is working fine - apart from it's slowness
and noise - but with the normal floppy controller. Used to work as 3rd
device with a 3.5" and 5.25" drive, but when the latter (finally) seemed
to have died last week, I had to re-jumper the tape drive to become 2nd
device. Guess you won't have such problems with your dedicated
controller.
