Hi,

Have been messing around for about a week now, just to set up Linux
right in a way DMA can be used. Did a minimum custom install of RH7, and
several other installs just to make the kernel recompilable (it's hard
when you have a 1 G hd :-), tried params, searched the net for
compatibility issues and so, just because of this problem: I can't make
hdc to start up in a default dma-mode.

System: Epox EP-68LXR mobo with i440 chipset, 82371AB PIIX4 bridge,
Award 4.51PG bios. Samsung 4.3 SV0432D (UDMA-2) is used for Win98 (hda)
and Seagate ST 51080 (Multiword DMA mode 2) for Linux (hdc), and a
Toshiba XM5702 cdrom as hdd.

What can be noticed at startup is that, no matter what I try, all hd's
are set up in PIO mode. Besides this, I have to force hdc with chs
parms, otherwise physical parms are used (why?). Bios settings are ok
(all UDMA, LBA), even flashed it 3 days ago to most recent version.
However, when I force ide usage in lilo, dev/hda is ok after boot (so
says hdparm), but still the pio mode message.. Besides it is the win
disk :-) Hdc stays in normal mode, but then can be changed by hdparm.
Hdparm -i tells me it is set up in mword mode 0, and no pio's at all.
Forcing this should be risky..

Thought it was a jumper thing, but no. Removing cdrom either helps.
Recompiling the kernel is something I didn't do and is not necessary, I
think. Adding 300 megs just to force default dma..

Here's the info:

I have everything working now, using BootMagic/Partition Magic. I had
set advanced partition hiding on and set the desired partitions on the
other drives to be visible. That does not work. However, turning
advance partition hiding off, does make primary partitions on other
drives visible. DOS on ide2 will boot, but if I try to allow
partitons on ide0 to be visible to it, the boot process hangs the
computer. This is OK since I only want DOS on ide2 as a backup in
case ide0 gets corrupted. The FAT16 data partition, hda6 (well below
the 8G limit), is not visible to DOS 6.22, but it is visible to both
WIN98SE and Linux. I assume that this is a just a DOS 6.22
limitation.

I did a full reinstall of Mandrake 7.0 into hda3, and installed LILO
there. I tried several times. but Mandrake would not install with an
SMP kernel as it did before. However, I was able to edit lilo.conf
and it now boots with the SMP kernel.

I was unable to find a copy of your book localy. If problems develop,
I'll order your book. I have more hardware upgrades desired. Thanks
for your help.

0. Connect the ZIP drive to the parallel port
1. modprobe lp
2. modprobe imm (if this gives an error, use ppa instead of imm)
3. Put a DOS disk in the ZIP drive and attempt to access it using
   mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt
4. If that didn't work, try "modprobe scsi_mod sd_mod".

What would you connect a terabit card to... given that the fastest bus i've
seen in an linux machine is a 64-bit 66mhz PCI one which can only provide a
touch over 4Gigabit of bus bandwidth?

I feel useless that i'm only just putting gigabit in my own appartment...
where can i get some terabit gear?

There are several methods. Editing your XF86Config will get it working with
kde/gnome programs.

Editing your .Xdefaults will get it working with netscape (sort of), emacs and
a few others.

The above solutions are explained here:

http://www-sop.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

For other programs (also works for programs above if you so desire) you can use
imwheel:

Try running "ACP/U" at the command line (dos diskette prompt) and set
the DMA mode to ZERO.

Pretty much all BIOSes are "too old," in this respect.

Anyway, use Linux fdisk to make a partition you think will be about
right for /boot (20MB should be _plenty_), then check out the
partition table information (also using fdisk - not cfdisk or any
others). It should tell you the start and end cylinders.

You can also try to be smart and do it in your head. Presumably your
hard disk is being reported as something like 38274/16/63 (the last
two are probably the same). So we have about 1023*16*63*512 =
503.5MB, which is roughly how big your /boot partition can be. Tell
fdisk something smaller than that and you're almost certainly in the
clear.

hi there,

i have got into trouble installing suse 7.0 on my machine. first i had
major headaches with yast2, so went back to the old faithful - yast1.
the system installs but doesnt recognize the adaptec scsi card (2940UW
dual - bios 1.33). the sequence goes like this:

1. during yast1 initial screen, i tried to load the scsi kernel modules
for adaptec scsi - i get a message that module faile to load but the
message output shows that it did recognize the card along with an error
saying parallel port devices not found (why thsi?).

2. after the full install, the boot messages show 0 scsi hosts found.

as a matter of interest, the win2k installed on the second disk does
recognize the card and all the peripherals.

my sys config is as follows:

pentium iii, 700 mhz w/128m. the pci peripherals are asus-v3800magic
agp, 3com 3c9xx network card, adaptec 2940uw and es-1373 sound
(integrated on the motherboard). the motherboard is an intel 815.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance

/bazmi.

I suspect you'll have to wait until terabit ethernet exists before you

Subject: Linux Mandrake and Lexmark z52

Hi,

I've just installed Linux Mandrake on my system and everything has installed
so far without a problem, apart from the above mentioned printer. I have
been unable to find a suitable driver for Linux anywhere. I've tried Lexmark
themselves and have searched various Linux hardware compatibility lists to
no avail. Interestingly, though, one list I searched said my printer was
supported in Red Hat Linux, Suse Linux and Corel Linux but no mention of
Mandrake Linux! Can any-one help me sort this problem out?

Cheers,

Shaun.
