Dell has RPMs available on their website which provide XF86Config files
for several resolutions. Just be sure to edit the monitor frequency lines
to match your monitor's specs.

Hi,

I got this IBM-DTLA-307045 harddisk. Linux on bootup reports it with those
parameters: hdd: IBM-DTLA-307045, 43979MB w/1916kB Cache, CHS=23819/16/63
That looks rather ok to me. The hard disk is supposed to have 46 gigs, but
whatever. But when I try to make a partition or just format hdd, I only
get 11G out of it.

There is a lengthy article at IBM describing the same problem with some
older BIOSes. But since with Linux I bypass the BIOS anyway (not booting
from that device), I thought I don't need to care.

I am using linux 2.2.12-20 on a i386 RH 6.2 box. It's a really old P75. Is
there anything I can do? Should I upgrade the kernel to 2.2.17 or 2.4.x even?

many thanks in advance,
Andreas

Can anybody recommend a CD burner brand/model that works well under

work under both Winxx, any flavor of linux, and maybe someday BeOS.

Thanks

If I map both of my CD drives to use ide-scsi then the RW shows up as
scd0 and the CDROM as scs1. If I only map the RW to ide-scsi then only
scd0 appears but when I modprobe ide-cd it complains that it can't
access /dev/hdd.

I'll try and have another play tonight and grab the error messages. I
was out all weekend so I couldn't try anything.

Well I seem to have an up to date PDQ description file. Looks
like we may be looking at the files in ~/.printjobs.

Which one should I look at first? What am I looking for?

Thanks,

I'd like to know if you come up with anything. For me, with lack of time, I
used my other medalist drive and the installation went perfect!

I used Norton Disk Doctor on the bad disk to mark the "supposed" bad
clusters and planned to use the disk for temporary backups etc.

You might be in luck if you choose check for bad clusters during the RedHat
installation. I did not try this option but it might help?!

I'm finding quite a difficult time trying to get this Gravis Blackhawk
Digital card working with the ESS Solo 1.
I see from dmesg that the ESS Solo 1 reports that a joystick port is
being found on 0xbc01, but I'm not sure as to how to pass this on to the
joystick driver.

Has anyone gotten this combination to work correctly? I know that both
drivers are still works in progress, but I'm just curious to know.

I bought a Philips 460 CD-RW 4/4/16 11 months ago.  It works flawlessly
in Linux, not quite so well under Win9x. I don't think these particular
models are made anymore, but the latest model in the 400 series is very
similar, and it reads at higher speeds.

Basically, most newer IDE CD-RWs and all SCSI CD-RWs should work under
Linux. The only ones that I've heard problem reports about are some
Sony models and the Iomega ZIP-CD. Make sure you read the CD-Writing
HOWTO at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html before you
start, or get a distro like Mandrake which sets things up automagically
if it detects a CD-RW on installation.

No, this is not normal, but if you're using cdparanoia, it will be
slower than cdda2wav. cdparanoia performs a lot of data integrity
checking and tends to read each sector of an audio CD several times to
catch and repair any scratches/errors on the medium. Some CD-ROMs are
better at reading audio data than others, but the old 8x drive in my
laptop can read CDDA at 0.75x, and my 4/4/16x CD-RW can read it at about
1.5x with cdparanoia.

Do you get a lot of + signs (or, Cthulhu forbid, * or ! signs) in the
display when you're using cdparanoia? If so, it means your drive isn't
reading CDDA very well. You can use cdda2wav to improve the speed, but
that will also reduce the quality.

> Linux does recognize the 3Com ISA Etherlink III card (model 3C509B-TPO).

Set the I/O and IRQ with jumpers so the device does not conflict
with other devices in your box (watch for serial device conflict) -
say I/O = 0x300 and IRQ = 5.  Make sure /etc/modules.conf (or
/etc/conf.modules) has the lines

alias eth0 [module]
options io=0x300 irq=5

where [module].o is the driver for your network card (I don't know
what module drives that card - I have never owned a 3com product).
I use sis900.o and ne.o for my two ethernet cards.

Once that's done, you activate the card by, as root, typing
ifup eth0, or by setting ONBOOT=yes in the file

 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Here is the config script for my eth0 card:

DEVICE=eth0
USERCTL=no
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=x.x.x.255
NETWORK=x.x.x.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=x.x.x.y
GATEWAY=x.x.x.z

You will need your numbers at x,y,z - it depends on what you are
using the card for. Once that is in place and the module is loaded,
type ifup eth0 (or once all works, "ONBOOT=yes" will activate the
device automatically at boot time). If you see no message like

 Delaying eth0 initilization

it's probably working. Type "ifconfig eth0" to see.

For Red Hat specific configuration information, read

Hi Andreas,
                    I added a 15 GB drive to a P90 by getting
a Promise Technology DriveMAX bios extender card. The
card cost me maybe 16 or 17 dollars. It allows up to about
128 or 132 GB drives. I also downloaded the new Lilo
from ftp://ftp.metalab.org. It does not have the 1024 cylinder
limits. I used the phrase "lba32" on one line in the lilo.conf
file. Leave out the quotation marks. I think the new lilo
is version 21.5.
 You don't have to use lilo to boot Linux if you don't want
to as there are other ways to boot.
