Check www.nvidia.com, under linux drivers. My suggestion would be to do
a normal installation, and then follow the instructions on the website for
installing the nvidia supplied drivers. While I personnally would prefer an
open source driver to the NVidia binaries, I also can't argue with the huge
performance increase I get.

Now now Greg, this is comp.os.linux.hardware, not
comp.os.linux.advocacy. I've seen enough wars about which
OS is best, I'd rather not get into a which linux distro is best.

Okay
Thanks all responders for great help, I now have much more insight in the
issue.
I understand that scsi2 should be sufficient for 2 drives as well. I'll
have one drive for operating systems and one for data.
I also understand that IDE is becoming faster too, and isn't ruled out as
an option yet. I'll consider scsi2 and ide udma/100, and let the price
decide.
Thanks, have a nice day, and maybe see you again one day

Giantolin, you should probably post this to news://it.comp.os.linux.iniziare
, or
hope that someone with a better grasp of italiano reads this me. As far as
the
hardware you have listed goes, you sholdn't have any troubles with Suse 7.1,
though you might need to use Xfree86 3.3.6 (rather then 4.0.x), and I don't
know
if thats an option. I'm completely lost on that last sentence, though for
all I know,
you're completely lost trying to read my response.
Is there a translation service available on the web? One that actually
works?

the computer.

It's worth the hassle to me, as long as it isn't too expensive.
Thanks for the input.

Great! Good to know what to ask for, when you're in the store. I'll go
for the quieter stuff, as long as "little more money" really is little more
money and affordable.

First of, what can't find your modem?
Have you checked to make sure that /dev/modem is a symlink that actually
points to /dev/ttyS0? If not, do a 'ln -s /dev/modem /dev/ttyS0'.
Something that I have always found helpfull to make sure the modem is
there and is capable of responding to commands it to type:
echo atz > /dev/ttyS0
and observe the lights on the modem to see it the data/commands are
actually making it to the modem, then
echo atd(some fictitious number) > /dev/ttyS0
to see it will pick up the phone line

In the last N years, I have been watching IDE vs. SCSI battle, if price is your
big factor, then always choose IDE (unless you can get last years high
performing SCSI drives at firesale prices when the new models come out, or if
you need more disks than IDE supports). If speed particularly under multiuser
situations, or total capacity is more important than price, always choose high
end SCSI.

Running without mtrr gives you time to study each frame.

Compile your kernel without agp support, and let the Nvidia-driver do
its thing.

Halloo all,
I have 2 hard-drives that I have installed in removable hard-drive racks,
and want to be able to hot-swap them while my SuSE 7.1 system is running.
Assuming I umount the filesystems that the drives are mounted in before
removing the drive, can anyone think of any problems that might be caused
because of this? Any advice would be appreciated.

The kernel is outdated, and needs a new driver. The source disk of RH 7.0
has the driver that compiles under RH 6.2 and works fine.

Oops! IDE drives (IBM Deskstar, ATA100 and an older Seagate 3.2GB ATA33)
on the primary IDE controller of a Tyan S1598 Trinity ATX motherboard. The
HD rack is the only device on that IDE controller.

This is true, though my reasoning lies in ALSA. This is the recommended
driver library to use as it does support this person's hardware. I
recommend SuSE as they ship their distro with the ALSA drivers already
supported.
Optionally, this person may get the ALSA packages from
http://www.alsa-project.org, compile them, install them, and change an init
script to run the sound daemon upon bootup. This is what I do as I try to
compile as much as my system by hand as possible. (But that is another
holy war altogether).

IDE drives are not really designed for such things. By trying it, you risk
at least trashing your data or crashing your system. I guess doing damage
to your mainboard and the HDs themselves is also possible.

This is really bugging me and I don't know what to do...
I'm running Suse7.1/KDE2 on a Pentium III w/ 256MB RAM and an ATI Rage card
with 32MB VRAM and XFree4.x My monitor is a Iiyama Vision Master 450 (19").
My image quality is crappy - window borders often are real wiggly or
crooked. They change depending on where on the screen I place them - so if
I move a window to a certain place it looks fine. If I move it somewhere
else it's left or right border goes all crooked or wavy again. The 'good'
places are not the same all the time.
I had the problem before I upgraded to Suse7.1 but the move to XFree 4
seems to have made it worse.
Does anyone have any ideas?
