It turned out I didn't have the latest beta, and that, once I went and
got it, worked (I think) I need to go find the latest gs, 6.23 IIRC,
and build that.
As gs just got itself a new maintainer, where is the code now, still at
ftp.aladdin.com, or has it been moved?

Ok, I have now had the pc running the whole weekend with USB disabled
in the bios and xscreensaver (2D&3D) running. It has not shown any
problem during that weekend. I consider it stable now. I know that it
would crash at least once a day, and that even with no screensaver
running.
I have had this problem even with RedHat 6.0 using a standard kernel
(2.2.14 to 2.2.16). I first noticed it when the network interface was
running 100mbit/sec and therefore causing more interrupts (NIC irq
shared with USB, but USB drivers never loaded (hadn't got any)).
Therefore I say that the MSI 6167 motherboard (AMD chipset) and the
Linux kernel is *a bad match*. At least if interrupt sharing is
happening with the USB port. Disable USB from bios and you are safe (I
know I am).

You need to enable i2c in your kernel - see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/bttv* (think it's there...) for more info.

The ifcfg-eth0 file simply sets IP address u.s.w. for the network
interface. I'll bet you have one on each machine in which
BOOTPROTO is set to DHCP - and your /etc/conf.modules has
an "alias eth0 [module]", too (assuming you did not specifically
enter your IP, etc. using a config tool - in which case you will
find an ifcfg-eth0 with the right info). Most distro's try to make
this happen automatically during install - but it almost always fails
for me. I have better luck setting these parameters by hand (or, it's
necessary because my net cards don't work after "out of the "box"
install).

I've used a panasonic DVD-RAM under linux here (don't know the exact
type)
Worked with a small patch then, but IIRC you don't need that with the
current kernel anymore.

We build Linux boxes with working cdrw's. Here's what we do.
I suggest you compile a kernel for scsi emulation, removing atapi
cd support. Red Hat gives config files in the directory configs
which lives in the kernel source code directory. Use the config
file from which your current kernel was built (from the kernel
source directory, type "make menuconfig" and use "L" to load the
config file). In "General setup", make sure SCSI support is on
(you will see [*] SCSI support). In "Block devices", make sure
Include IDE/ATAPI CDROM support is off (you will see
[ ] Include IDE/ATAPI CDROM support), and make sure SCSI emulation
support is on (looks like <*>). Finally, in "SCSI support", make
sure SCSI generic support is on (like <*>).
Those are the kernel options which will work. You then must
compile and place the kernel image in /boot and make sure you
can boot it with LILO (read README in the kernel source directory).
Just use a block from /etc/lilo.conf for your new kernel. In the
block pertaining to the new kernel, put
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
(assuming cdrom is master secondary IDE device). Type /sbin/lilo
to activate the changes. You should have a boot disc and leave
your old kernel in place so you can boot from it if the new one
fails. You should see a SCSI adapter found during boot, and
one SCSI device.
Finally - there is a file called /etc/cdrecord.conf which sets
the device information telling cdrecord which device to use.
You can kill /dev/cdrom and mv /dev/cdrom1 to /dev/cdrom if you
like - assuming you will continue using this kernel. In cdrecord.conf,
my default device is "yamaha", and cdrecord -scanbus tells me
/dev/scd0 (my R/RW) is at 2,0,0. At the bottom of cdrecord.conf,
I put the line
yamaha = 2,0,0
and that's it.
Red Hat has documenation bundled into the cdrecord RPM. The file
README.ATAPI is a good read.

Hello!
I've a Transmonde VIBRANT LS portable.
I have problem with my cooling fan under Linux.
I've installed SuSE Linux 6.4 on my machine and
everything works just fine except cooling fan control.
If the fan is turned on during the boot when Linux is started,
then the fan couldn't turn off and remains turned on all the time.
It is the same, if the fan is turned off at boot time, then
remains turned off all the time.
I've already compiled the kernel 2.2.16 with advanced power management
support and I can use all the functions (suspend to disk or RAM,...)
which it offers, but I couldn't find the solution for
cooling fan.
Each suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello
I have a Turtle Beach Daytona sound card (S3 sonicvibes chip) that works
fine in Windows & BeOS (for which I origially bought it).
With Linux the sound is like muted. If I turn the volume of my powered
speakers to the maximum, I can hear some sound (very low level though) with
the output level set to the max in the mixer, telling me that the module is
loaded OK.
What's the reason for this behaviour?
How can I set it straight?
Thanks for your help.
Best regards.

Call for ISDN and DSL can be forgotten as neither is available when I

You're a little ahead of your time. People are working to get color
management into the GIMP (using LCMS), and get popular monitor
calibration pucks to work with Linux, but it's a slow climb.
You can find out more about color management under Linux, as well as the
LCMS free color management system at www.coloraid.de. So far, scanner
calibration is farther along then printer cal or monitor cal, but it's
all still very primitive and crude.
You won't need to tweak the inside pots, the color cal will come from
the CMS program sending new curves to the video card's DAC. The only way
to do something meaningful with the pots is by using something like
Optical PreCal, and that's a real long way off for the Linux world.
Ciao!

There are some old Matrox cards with
