Can anyone help me on setting up modem on my Redhat 7.0 with 2.2.16 kernel.
I know for external modem connected to serial com ports is configured to
dev/ttyS0 but my modem is an internal modem (PCI) and the modem auto-detection
cannot find it.
I've tried 'ln -s /dev/modem /dev/ttyS0' (and other port number) but had no luck
either. Is there other ways I can configure it?

Hi folks, I have a Presario 1700 with Linux RH 7.0 on it and everything
is working just fine besides the network (and modem) connection.
After some reseach I found out that my ethernet nic is a CONEXANT. I
browsed through many sites looking for some suitable kernel module as a
driver. No clue...
I have tried many drivers just randomly without success.
Finally (and sadly) I came to the decision that I need to invest in a
PCMCIA, plug it in and get hooked up to the net. Now I find myself
drowned in an ocean of information and don't know what to buy exactly. I
would like to have a combo Ethernet/Modem with the less painul
installation, not exactlya a plug and play thing, but something that has
been tested and is guaranteed by experience to work.
Any suggestions?
Please CC me the reply as I rarely have the chance to browse through the
newsgroups.
Greetings, Omar Lakkis

What *exactly* modem brand & model do you have?
Tell us the output of "cat /proc/pci" is and "setserial -ag /dev/ttyS*". Look at
the HOW-TO for modems (http://www.linux.nf) and configure the setserial command
accordingly.
If this doesn't work, you may have more complicated problems like the modem sharing
an IRQ on the PCI bus with another peripheral. If this is the case you may need to
upgrade the linux serial driver or kernel.

Sure! Now that somebody's "listening", no worries about bandwidth.
I tried my best formatting the output and hope it remains readable,
even though it's nothing like what Textpad produces!

Still not very readable (the output file should just be inserted as it
is, then it will be readable in fixed font), but I guess I have the
information needed. It seems as only the second entry in the extended
partition table cylinder 2424 is invalid. To delete this entry you can
do (pip1.bat):
editpart 1 2424 2 - 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4865 255 63 26
To avoid errors, I recommend that you download the batch file from:

I was wondering about compatibility with CD-RW drives. Do they are just use
a generic standard, kinda like IDE, so they're all compatible with Linux? I
am wondering specifically about the AOpen 12x10x32x and the LG 12x8x32x
drives, and whether or not they are compatible with Linux.

You can put them where you like. The makefile is yours to edit (I put
them in the alsa subdir, of course :-).

combo's are notoriously unreliable and I can't recommend any (though I
daresay there are some good ones). I always go buy a plain ne2000
compatible (usually labelled "SOHO") for $30 when I'm in the states.
The reason is that the connectors are the first things to go on these,
and all the ne2000-compatibles have the same plugs. Anything else is
the devil to replace when it goes. Ne2000's are slow, let the kernel do
all the work, but are solid as a rock. No muss, no fuss.
For modems, I don't seee the need nowadays. Just plug into the nearest
network!
That said, any serial modem card (not a winmodem) will work. Get a slow
and true. The problems are with combos, when only the modem part will
work, or only the ethernet part, etc.

The little reddish thing I have in the laptop from work (think it's
a Xircom, 56K and 10/100 NIC) gets along splendidly with Red Hat 7,
and also got along just fine with an earlier version of Red Hat
that I used previously. The only down side to me is that it takes
up both slots (my next laptop WILL have an integrated 10/100 port,
dangit!) and thus has to be swapped out when I want to shove in the
CompactFlash adapter to load pictures from the digital camera. Oh well.

Hi
I'm back, sooner than I thought.
I'm having a major problem with my TV-card. All was fine under Linux 2.4.1
but this morning I upgraded to 2.4.4, and well, I downgraded back just 10
minutes after.
I just can't watch xawtv full screen anymore, in 2.4.4. I fire up xawtv,
everything is fine, card still detected and all (no error messages at
boot), I press 'f' for full screen, and all goes wrong. About 1/4 of the
screen shows tv, the rest is black. Not good.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Piet

Yeah I know that 5V isn't ideal, but at the time I build my computer I
didn't had the time nor components to make a creative wiring
circuit... and the fan I had started without problems at 5V (and still
does), it actually starts spinning around 3.5V

Well where's the fun in that :-) I'm now considering building a
circuit that allows me to control the fan speed through a
parallel/serial/game port.

Yes, youre right. There is a project called Network Audio System, which
aims at doing the same thing for sound as X does for graphics. I dont have
any experience with it, so I cant give you any advice. Just search for it
with google and give it a try.

3Com 3C589's had a lifetime free replacement service on the dangly bit
at one point. You had to fill in a form and send the old one back and
a couple of weeks later you got a new one back in the post. I don't
know if you can still find the form on their web site though...
