You have to let lilo know about the changes you made. By "rerun",
he means typing /sbin/lilo [enter] as root and watching lilo say

Added linux*
Added [other images]

Else, your changes to /etc/lilo.conf are unkown to lilo.

Does anyone have the monitor settings for the Philips 109S monitor for
Red Hat Linux 6.2? I have tried almost every conceivable permutation
with Xconfiguation but X will not run. It complains about the monitor
settings. I will pay cash to anyone in the Chicago area (I live
downtown) to have someone come over and help me with this because it's
driving me nuts!

I am using the exact same video cards with the
exact same issues with Red Hat 7.0 you've

Uhh, no. He means re-run lilo. I.e., /sbin/lilo at the command prompt.
This will re-write the boot sector with that nice new 'append=' parameter in
it. Otherwise all you've done is reboot with the same old stuff.

If you have XFree86 3.xx, try running XF86Setup. This has a choice of
generic monitor specs.

Chose 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz and see if it works. Turn it off quickly at the
test and try again.

If you have XFree86 4.0.x try running xf86config chose 5, 6, 0r 7 based
on the most basic info about your monitor. If not, chose 6 as above.

There is supposed to be a file with monitor info that comes with XFree86
4. I didn't get it. But, you can look for it at:

I've also had several problems with xcdroast, so I tried some of the alternate
"front-ends". For the easiest in useability I recommend "Koncd", and "Gnome
Toaster". If these two "front-ends" give you problems as well, then you may
want to look into your cd-writer.

If you don't have a Master/Slave cable, jumper the new drive for Slave.

Plug in the same ide cable as your current drive.

If for some reason your ribbon cable only has one connector, buy a cable
with two.

If you have UDMA 66, be sure to get the special UDMA 66 cable (80
conductor, half are grounds).

Connect it to power. If necessary, buy a "Y" cable with Molex connectors.

Normally your current HD will be "hda", if so, the new drive will be
"hdb".

Boot the system. The new disk should be recognized at boot up.

Mount the disk and format it with fdisk (vfat partition)

Make a vfat file system on it.

Edit "lilo.conf"

Run "/sbin/lilo"

Install MS Windows.

At "pcprogress.com", a 10.2 MB will cost about $100.00 and they will sell
you MS Windows for about $100.00 if you buy a disk from them.

However, the commandline utilties are still a good way to

Subject: Debian: Problems accessing parallel port
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 02:23:00 +0200

Hi,

I have quite some problems accessing the parallel port under my Debian
2.2 installation. I started out with the printing howto, which suggests
to make a basic test "echo"ing something to /dev/lp0. My bash however
reports "/dev/lp0: No such device" (or lp1, etc. respectively).

The parallel port is an onboard port, BIOS setup 378h, IRQ7. I used
modconf to make the system load "parport_pc" (and parport) on bootup,
which works without error messages (the printer even makes a reset, when
the driver is loaded).

"cat /proc/parport/0/hardware" reports:
base: 0x378
irq: 7
dma: none
modes: SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2

Am I missing something ? The howto also suggests to add
===
alias /dev/printers lp # only for devfs?
alias /dev/lp* lp # only for devfs?
===
to modules.conf - which I did to no use. So how do I access my
printer/parallel port under Debian ?

TIA !

A trivial example, I admit, but when I changed video cards, I rebooted just
to see how RH 6.2 would cope. It found the change, asked if I wanted the
appropriate drivers installed - and then asked about monitors, etc.

Couldn't have been easier!

I'm having a lot of trouble getting two SCSI host adapters to work in my
machine at the same time right now, and I'm sure it's something simple
to get going (after all, win98 could do it), and I was hoping someone
could help me.

I have two adapters, an Adaptec 2930CU and a Symbios 53c8xx, only the
adaptec one has a bios, plus it has all the hard drives. The driver for
the adaptec card is compiled into the kernel and the symbios number is
compiled as a module, the thing is when I try to load the module
sym53c8xx.o I get the error:
/sbin/modprobe /lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/sym53c8xx.o
/lib/modules/2.2.17/scsi/sym53c8xx.o: init_module: Device or resource

...I don't get it. I must be missing something basic. Anyway, any help
here would be awesome,

We recently upgraded one of our machines here to a Duron 700Mhz running on
a QDI mainboard, and haven't been able to get a few recent Linux distros to
install reasonably on it.
RH6.2 installs but chokes constantly whenever we exit the X-server
(XFree-3.3.6, running on an S3V Trio64), and Linux-Mandrake 7.1 won't even
install on the system.

I know that this is a fairly "recent" system and as such the hardware
support in the kernels distributed with the distros aren't necessarily up
to date. Wanted to find out from others on this list who are running
Durons what distro they're running so that I can try to get this machine up
and going again.
