Windows will reassign irq's. As with all pci cards, this irq is not
fixed. It may be of benefit if in your bios setup during boot, you set
operating system NOT plug-n-play aware (it won't hurt to set this, it
might not help though).

Go to http://opensource.creative.com, follow the instructions for the
latest cvs. You will need to have your kernel source installed and
configured for your current system before you compile it. The docs in
the cvs mention all you will need.

You might find an interest in ldpci and setpci. But avoid that until you
have followed the docs in the most recent cvs snapshot.

ldpci and setpci, which should be "lspci" and "setpci" ("ld" is

The i840 indeed is a problem. The IO-APIC can send an invalid irq vector
217, into never-never land. You will probably need to run the board with
kernel option "noapic". This means the board will not be as responsive
as normal dual cpu, since hardware irq's can only be serviced by the
first cpu this way.
During the install, when you get a chance to give kernel options, use
"noapic". It would be nice if Intel would show an interest in helping
with this problem, it makes high end Intel servers into dogs in Linux.

LILO release 21.6 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.
Version 21.6 is an upgrade for users of the Reiser File System, and adds
new diagnostic capabilities. Internal changes allow booting kernels with
larger real-mode setup codes (2.4.0 and later). This version is fully
backward compatible with version 21.5, which added the customizable boot
menu interface, and versions back to 21.2, which allowed booting beyond
the 1024 cylinder limit on disks >8Gb.
Source code is available for download from:
ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
Or from the main distribution site:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo (please use)
See the distribution file 'CHANGES' for details of the differences between
21.6 and prior releases.
--John Coffman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
P.S. As of the time of this announcement, the main distribution site at

You may also be able to use a module to run the SCSI card. With Caldera
eServer and a Initio card all I had to do was activate the module for it -
no reboot, no kernal build. I then created file systems on my disks
attached to that card.

Linux Gurus:
Thank you very kindly for your suggestions. I have tried the active
partition item and it did not work.
I failed to tell you that when I installed LILO (at the installation
of the Caldera Linux), I installed it to the natvie linux partition
/dev/hda3. I was not sure that would work, but it was an option in
the Caldera Installation and it all worked fine for several weeks.
When viewing the disk with the MSDOS FDISK, it showed that the active
partition was the first partition (/dev/hda1). After changing it to
partition 3 (/dev/hda3) and rebooting, the error message about
"Missing operating system" was still there. Then going back into
FDISK (MSDOS) changed the active partition back to 1 (/dev/hda1).
After rebooting this, it boots back into Win98.
I am thinking that when Win98 did this thing to the disk, it some how
corrupted something on the linux partition (/dev/hda3) such that it
is necessary to run fsck. The reason I think this may be the case,
is after booting with the emergency disk created after the fact
(described in Caldera's FAQ), I get an odd error that says something
like "Kernel Panic:VFS:unable to mount root fs on 03:03". This
suggests to me that it is having difficulty reading the linux partition
and it needs to run fsck. Another item that suggests this is that
while in Win98, trying to read the linux partition with the tool
explore2fs.exe reports a read error.
Do you have other suggestions about how I might recover the Linux data.
While it was nice to boot back to Win98, I really need the linux stuff.
I guess next time I will install GRUB instead of LILO.
Thanks for your help.

First - I recommend NEVER using DOS fdisk on a hard drive which
is something other than a DOS only hard drive (in fact - I think
one should use Linux fdisk to partition DOS hard drives!). If
one lets DOS fdisk write to a hard drive which has Linux and DOS,
it will make the Linux partition non-bootable.
It looks like this is what happened, and the "Linux Rescue Disk"
is NOT particular to the installed Linux system. Is it? Or is
it an image that boots into the Caldera installer??

Has anyone tried interfacing to Backpack PD/CD optical drives ?
I'm hoping that there is some work on this format which is a long term
storage solution even if the format is not popular in the U.S.
Hope someone can point the way to an easy port of equivalent drivers
from Backpack.

You don't *have* to do the windows thing. It is not that hard. The only
'numbers' you should need, are username and password.
>Any recent experience?
Not really, but what you need is PPPoE client. Look at
http://feenix.eyep.net/ldp/adsl/
go to the configuration section and check out Roaring Penguin and
PPPoEd. Either should do fine. Just follow instructions for either.
Bellsouth doesn't care if you use Linux, but they definitely won't help.
Well, unless you get a tech who runs it at home.

RedHat 6.2, Dell, P3 600Mhz.
This is a qlogic ISP1040B
Very suprised to see it roach on drives greater than 4 GB.
A 9 GB. drive was not recognized at all, while a 73 GB. drive caused the
driver to send a message to the boot log about (as I recall) a "bad
extended reply" and then it reset the bus. The jaz drive and 4 GB.
drives are recognized on the card just fine.
This is a basic RedHat 6.2 install. Any comments are appreciated.
