Hi all,
i'm a total newbie in Linux, but I installed the Mandrake 7.1 version on my
E50.
The problem is that I want to use it to connect to the net.
It doesn't recognise ly modem ( a Compaq V90 classic internal modem)
What can I do? Delete Linux, or is there a driver, and how do I install it?
Thks for any answer (please, directly on my mail adress, I don't have a
regular connection at home).
Thks
Yann.

Everyone,
Just recently finished putting together a pretty decent Mandrake Linux
box except for the video card. Was curious to see what people might
recommend. I currently have been pricing the ATI Rage Fury Pro, ATI Xpert
2000, ATI Radeon, and the nVidai TNT2. Looking for a card that will perform
well and cost the minimal amount of money. Would like a decent card that
would have the extra horse power if I decide to get into gaming with the
Linux. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I would say that the de facto standard these days is a nVidia GeForce 2 (MX,

I just upgraded to RH 7.0 from 6.0 (and also migrated to a new server),

I've had pretty good luck with the Hauppage WinTV card on several Linux
Distros and several kernel configurations from 2.2.x on up to 2.4.3.
For me on a MMX233, an AMD K-6 2/550 and the current AMD K-7 on a GA7ZX
board, has been to compile the kernel with v4l support as module to give
me the videodev.o and the bttv.o and also enable the i2c all as modules.
Since I use Alsa sound, I only enable sound as module for soundcore.o
and the module for the tvaudio, I guess it is. It's the last one in the
sound section before going into other lowlevel sound drivers.
Enable pnp and isapnp in the kernel compile only as modules, and make
sure you are running up to date modutils.(This may be just a matter of
personal taste, but I've found I have better luck to enable pnp os in my
bios, but retain manual control over certain irq and dma, but I dual
boot with Win98 and milage may vary either way. I'm not sure I
understand all I seem to know in this area. ;-))
The following in /etc/modules.conf:
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options i2c-core i2c_debug=1
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
options bttv card=2 radio=1
options msp3400 once=1
options tuner type=2 debug=1
Making sure the scripts with xawtv or kwintv to make the necessary dev
entries have been run and then using the v4l-conf that packs with
kwintv, or the script that packs with xawtv, you should have TV and
sound and then you can script or fine tune to suit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't have v4l configured in the kernel (or as a
module), I don't think. I did try REMing out the references to the /dev/video
and /dev/bttv devices in /etc/sane.d/vfl.conf. Now I don't get references to
failures of the char-major-81 failing to load. However, the fundamental
problem remains. The following is typical of the /var/log/messages I get
after the scanner is accessed. (Note that the scanner does begin to cycle
when accessed: it lowers the slide in place and sounds like it begins to
scan, so it seems that the scanner is recognized as being there.)
The obvious thing is an immediate timout (first line). Then the card (host 0)
and entire bus reset (lines 2 and 3). Then a data overrun is detected from
the scanner (scsi0:0:3:0). The last lines indicate that the bus is trying to
access the CDROM writer (scsi0 0 1 0) and failing due to a timeout. (There
was a data cdrom in the drive at the time).
Clearly the SCSI chain goes nuts!
Output to /var/log/messages when I use GIMP to acquire a preview from the
35t+ scanner (from the preview window of GIMP):

I have verified again that the scanner works fine under Windows NT on the
same machine, so there is no doubt that this is a software glitch, probably
resulting from various kernel upgrades I have done recently. Sigh...

Will this go?
My motherboard is an Intel LX (Dell OEM), and I'd like to upgrade the

the LX is only a 1x AGP board, and the Millennium G450 will be 2x AGP

Can 2x cards go in 1x slots?

dd won't do it -- it's pure raw image, which is dependent on (among other things)
disk size. There's a dump script I have around here that would work, but what I
have always done is reinstall to the new system (which is fast) and then just copy
over the localizations. This method has the beneficial side-effect of making sure
that my localization set is up to date.

I don't use SMART, to be honest, I keep meaning to, but haven't had the
time. You could try:

I do know that you need to monitor the values from when the hard disk is
new to get the most out of the results, though.

Yes it will go into the slot.
I do remember however, there being some kind of a power shortage with LX
boards with regards to modern video requirements.
I **know** somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
As I recall, the older boards supply X number of watts of power and the new
requirement is higher. That certainly won't keep you from trying it though.
It will probably work.

FWIW, I could not get an AGP G400 to work in my 233Mhz Pentium-II that uses an
LX motherboard (which as you say, only supports 1x AGP slots). So I would
imagine the answer is no. I have a PCI G200 in the system now. If you really
want to go up to the G450, you might wait for later in the month, when the PCI
G450 will be available, and then see if it is compatible with Linux.

I would suspect that your disks are not adequately cooled, with the second
guess being your power supply might be maxed out. I am not an expert in
cooling, but some of the links I have noticed over the years are available in:

Is anybody running >1 floppy controller via Linux

If so, how?
I have hundreds of floppy disks I need to read and archive to CD.
I figure that using 2 controllers would allow having 2 drives
running simultaneously, or are my suspicions correct that despite having
primary/secondary addresses, they can't share the DMA and IRQ
so only one's reading/writing at a time?
What of the floppy-tape interface cards?
I have a few SCSI interfaced iomega flopticals,
but I'd rather not risk those drives on possibly damaged floppies.
A more far out solution: use regular floppy drives via a SCSI-floppy
"bridge card", if anyone's gotten that running.
I wish I had the time to handle such driver work myself right now.

Note, the one of low-end Radeons (Radeon VE) is not yet supported by an
official driver, though I've seen patches posted to the X group. The VESA
driver works ok. In terms of the nVidia cards, there is a binary only driver
for the card, which works for many people, but whether or not it is available
on a distribution you will have to check (and obviously if running non-freely
available source offends you, then you probably want to look elsewhere). Last
year, I ran into problems that emacs seemed to trigger a bug in the driver on a
TNT based card, and reported it, and never got a response back. Quite frankly,
the Matrox cards have the best 2D look of any card I've used, the other cards
come out looking slightly blurry. In terms of gaming, I've heard of problems
with the ATI cards with DRI, but I believe people are working on them. You
probably want to go with something newer than the Rage Fury Pro and Xpert 2000,
since those are getting rather long in the tooth (as judged by video card
standards).

This power supply thing has always puzzled me. The HD's claim to run
on 5/12vdc .56/.27 amps which (w=va) = ~2.8 watts. Cooling fans (here)
are 12v x .08 amps or .96 watts. Why do we need 250 - 300 watt power
supplies? How much does the mobo and isa/pci stuff suck up?
Mostly rhetorical - thinking out loud - but if anyone knows, by all
means...
