With out more information, I would say that the IRQ is being used by
something else
have you tried sndconfig?
You may have to do a manual config of the sound card for it to work
properly.

There are a lot of reasons. I don't want to think about how to get
all the CPU caches to work together (there are usually three per
cache). You couldn't rely on registers, and so programs would have to
be recompiled to use only explicit memory references anyway. For
distributed parallel processing, you'd have to use a unified memory
pool (which is not that hard), but it would all be running over the
PCI bus.
Just to give you some figures: a CPU may run at 933MHz, but memory
runs at 133MHz and the PCI bus runs at 33MHz. Your speedy Pentium III
933 is going to run at 33MHz if you can't use registers or the cache
and have to rely on the PCI bus for memory. (And have to access
memory about every instruction.)

That can certainly be done, and is done. Each process or thread can
run on its own CPU, so (theoretically, but not practically) eight
processes can run with no slowdown on an 8-CPU box.

Not so much harder. Just write a multithreaded program.
Note what happens, by the way: multithreaded or multiprocessed
programs require you to write the IPC explicitly. Humans can do
that. Computers have a very hard time with it.

EPIC is, I think, written under the assumption that a compiler will be
able to give it big hints on what to do. The bonuses of EPIC will be
negated by a bad compiler.

Please help:
I'm trying to use my Adaptec 7850 (this is the chip name, not the board) with my
Yamaha 8x4x24, but when I boot the kernel hangs reporting twice a
timeout while accessing 0-0-0-0 which is the ID of the CDRW (the only
device present on the SCSI chain).
Terminations seem to be correct; I tried to disable both TCQ and "probe
all luns", but with no effect at all.
Any help much appreciated, and thanks in advance

For some of you, if you remember I said I had a SP1300/16.
Nope. its a SP300/16 (they called it a spl300r. Note the Lower case
'L" . After recompiling the Linux 2.0.38 kernel on my NFS/NIS client
box I got the card to be recognized by the NCR5380 driver with the
NCR53c400 extensions. ONLY problem is.. in 53c400 mode. it recognizes
the card is present. driver maps to address 338h (why that is is beyond
me). as the port address is 330h, irq 15, DMA 7.
Will not find the two SCSI hard drives (the built in bios sees them). In
NCR 5380 mode. it says (very trantor t130B like) (since the system at
this point is Crash and burn and I have no logging to a printer I
cannot give you the gory detailed error as the machine at this point
is a "ROCK!" This was compiled as part of the kernal not a module.
Something about a phase error and that the command may have
been sent. Termination is present on the cable at the ends (the
controler and a plug in terminator pluged into the Centronics 50 daisy
chained outlet on back of external box. termination power comes from
the computer itself. Cable is less than 3ft long and heavy duty
sheilding. I don't think thats the problem.
For the Linux hardware gurus who know SCSI at all. Why does
the NCR5380 with the NCR53c400 extensions map the address of the port
8 bytes higher than the docs that come with the card? When recompiling
(OH yeah, thats gonna be a pleasure) should I subtract 8 bytes from
the address that is modified in the
/usr/src/linux-2.0.38/drivers/scsi/Makefile (according to the
instructions for the Ncr5380 driver. I don't remember having this
config headache with my Trantor T130B card. That was YEARS ago.
This card also has REAL DMA. the NCR53c400 driver has only
psuedo DMA options. Should this make a difference for me during
testing?

I did see a few lines of cdrecord errors mentioned in the author's web site

DON'T POST BINARIES TO NON-BINARY GROUPS. My God, you even
_cross-posted_ a binary to _three_ non-binary groups.
Your article picked up about _700_ lines. Not a problem for me, as
I'm on a 100BTX to my news server, but for someone on a modem it
might take as long to download your one article as to download _the
rest of the articles in the group_.

Did you look at his files?
He has another configuration problem. The attachments have the wrong
MIME type.
They are (at least the first one was) plain text.
They should have the MIME type: "text/plain"
I would guess that he is using Netscape Messenger for his news reader.
If you 'attach' a plain text file, it is supposed to simply add it on to
the end of the message. But, apparently, it won't do that if it has the
wrong MIME type.

On the other hand, we really didn't need that much information.

I would hope that you have a 2.2.15 (or .16) Kernel installed as well.
Does it work with the stable Kernel?
