Hi all,
I have a card with this chipset...here's what I've found so far....
I'm running RedHat Linux 7.0.
At the Nvidia web site you can download XFree86-4.0.1 and GLX and kernel
drivers that will support this chipset....theoretically. I have NOT been
able to get past installations problems....
When I download the RPMs the NVdriver cannot be used because the systems
says it was compiled on a different version of the OS than mine -- mine is
apparently 2.2.16-22 and the rpm was apparently compiled on 2.2.16-21. I
then downloaded the tar file and attempted the 'make'.....however, there is
an error somewhere and the nv.c program will not compile.
I'm new to linux and make so I am going to have to try to debug the makefile
from the top and learn what all of upper case variable thingies are to try
figure how to enter the cc command manually and hopefully observe what the
problem is.
Meanwhile...I entered a problem report on Nvidia's website last night...
they don't 'officially' support this stuff, so I don't know if I'll hear
from anybody, but if I do, or if I fix the problem, I'll post.
Anybody know if there's a way to 'fool' the system into using the rpm even
though it was compiled under another version of the OS????

Is there a hardware monitor for linux that can print out temperatures
and fan speeds from the LM78 chip on my motherboard. Something similar
to Motherboard Monitor for Windows would be nice.
Thanks,

Allright guys. This worked for me (Dual 700 with a BX/GX chipset and a
Hercules MX AGP retail)
Here's the scoop:
This is not for the uninitiated, but no better time like the present to
get into some real UNIX admin stuff. :) If you get seriously lost,
check out the (Kernel, RPM and XF86) HOWTO's for more into.
This is from a posting done by a guy by the name of Mark Hillary on the
nvidia NG. (your fvorite deity) Bless his soul!
*) You need to install XF 4.0.1. If you did not pick it during the
install, then remove 3.3.6 and install 4.0.1. You can try doing an
upgrade using rpm.
*) You need to compile the AGPGart kernel module (should have been
already done by the RH7 distro). Try to load it (as root):
modprobe agpgart
Then type lsmod and make sure it is on the list. If you get any errors
loading it, or it is not on the list after the lsmod, you need to
compile the module into the kernel. You will need the kernel sources
for that. They should be on your distro CD.
*) You need to get the NVIDIA_kernel driver source (you're better off
than with the precompiled). compile the driver (which will try to to
install it) Also get the GLX driver and to the same.
*) run xf86config and pick the NVIDIA Geforce driver(type 311 during
the card selection). Make sure you know your type of mouse, keyboard,
and you know your monitor's vertical and horizontal ranges. IF YOU
INPUT THE WRONG INFO FOR YOUR MONITOR, YOU CAN BURN IT. Once completed.
You need to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config:
Search the file for glx. if it has a # sign at the beginning, remove
it.
Search the file for nv and change it to nvidia.
Save your changes. :)
*) try running the X server and see if it starts. You can try just
testing it by typing
X -probeonly
If it can start, you will notice the screen flicker a few times
before it returns to the command line. that means the driver can
actually display the resolutions that you gave it during the
xf86config. I think the config will try all the basic resolutions from
640x480 to 1280x1024. Once you know "life is peachy", start X with
startx. If it starts at 640x480, press ALT-CTRL-<keypad +> to increase
the resolution. Do the same with - instead of + to decrease.
Once you find out what res you want, edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config again
and this time search for "Modes". It probably looks like this:
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
All you have to do is put the resolution you'd like the X server to
start first. For example, edit ot to look like this for 1024x768
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600" "1280x1024"
If you do not know the actual resolution you liked, go back into X (or
stay there while editing the file) and type:
xdpyinfo
at the command line. You might need to scroll back, but the resolution
will be displayed somewhere around the first few output lines. Once you
make the changes, exit X and restart it.
I hope that helps all the people struggling with GF2MX cards. Again,
10^24 thanks to Mark Hillary for the original post. :)
Best Regards,
Zeus

Subject: Attention NYC Shoppers & Visitors - Beware of Rip-off SY Stores!!! ......
etFLh71lZ
Date: 6 Dec 2000 23:37:09 GMT
SY stores have been around for about 50 years or so and have only one
objective - TO RIP YOU OFF!
-
They are a constant source of frustration for the NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs, which has been trying to close them down for as long as
I can remember. SY's are the most ruthless merchants in New York. I should
know, I once worked as a stock clerk for one of them.
-
The term "SY" refers to the ethnicity of the shopkeepers. They come from a
small and isolated region of Syria, where for centuries a cult of swindlers
has flourished. Approximately 60 years ago, they started to emigrate to the
U.S. and setup shop along Broadway at Times Square and later moved to some of
the less desirable locations along 5th Avenue.
-
Not surprisingly, SY stores are usually found in areas frequented by tourists.
-
You can always spot an SY store by the odd assortment of merchandise.
Radios, cameras and other assorted electronics on one side of the shop and
on the other; jade, ivory carvings, tablecloths, porcelain figurines,
oriental carpets, etc.
-
SY stores are singular in their objective... To extract as much money from
the customer as possible, *buy virtually any means at all*. There is no set
price in an SY store. The salesman keeps 1/3 to 1/2 of the profit on everything
he sells (which is a strong incentive to overcharge) and overcharge he will!
It is not unusual for these merchants to charge upwards of 500 - 1000% profit
on an item, while leading you to believe that you're actually getting a bargain
(which is the cornerstone of their craft).
-
These merchants are masters of deception and one should not try to match wits
with them. This is their lifelong profession... they've been doing it for
generations and most Americans are simply out of their league when it come to
trickery, deceit and high-pressure sales tactics.
-
A couple of things that might clue you in to the fact that you may stumbled into
an SY store:
-
If the staff speaks to one another in code words or in a language that you
don't recognize... if the words "Lot" or "C-Line" are used frequently in
reference to a specific item... if the price tag is marked with a price that
is demonstrably higher then it's being offered to you for, then chances are
your in an SY store.
-
JUST LEAVE! It will be the best decision you made this holiday season and
both you and your checkbook (as well as your pride) will be all the better
for it.
-
Merry Christmas!

What is "Slave DMA" Is there a driver for the scsi-at card I

No problems here with 1GHz Tbird and KT7-RAID. RAID is out of the question

Additional info ....
logging out and logging on as either user or root will still give me
the access right error message
restarting the x server and logging back in as root still gives the
error message
looking at the files in /mnt/
I see a little lock on 'cdrom', 'cdrom2' and floppy - all of these
seem to be locked and give the same error message.
A complete restart will give me access to the drives again.

I need to format a hard drive that has linux on it to re-use it for win98.
When I use a win98 boot disk the format command won't recognise the drive
structure. The format command fails. I tried the Quantum "Zero Fill"

zerofill won't run.
How do I format this drive so I can use it with Win98??
Please help!!! My wifes laptop went out for repair and she needs this

As discussed on the attached links, it appears the modem portions of the AMR
devices are software controlled, rather than hardware controlled, making it
dubious as to whether it will function on the Linux kernal. Also, as stated
on the link, you give up about 13% of the processors resources. I'll bet
Linux will eventually support these devices, but I think I'll stick with
hardware modems in the PCI or ISA slot, particularly in light of the fact
the the AMR slot occupies the same position electronically as the 5th PCI
slot on the A7V, meaning if you use the AMR slot for the modem or sound, you
very likely lose a PCI slot in the process, unless the AMR and the device in
the 5th slot are willing to "share.".

Hi,
What about using fdisk to remove all the partitions that you have?
First use linux fdisk if that's possible, o/w use dos fdisk to wipe
out any partitions that it may see. Then try to format after that.
There are two kinds of format that windows format program offers I
think, one is quick format and another if full format. Do both of
them fail?
Another idea might be to do dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdX (X is a, b, c
or something depending upon which device it is linux or if it is SCSI
then /dev/sdX??), which will write zeroes all over the disk! Then use
format program.

Pankaj is correct. The Windows version of DOS can't see a drive formatted in
ext2 (the Linux file system). However Linux fdisk will reformat it into
either DOS, vfat, fat32, or many other formats that DOS will recognize.
Another solution (that's real easy for Windows users): If you have a
working Windows operating system on another drive, say in your slave
position, or on the second IDE channel, and you have Norton utilities, you
can simply boot Windows, run Norton, and answer affirmitively when Norton
tells you it sees probelms on you inux drive, would you like them corrected?
If you say yes, Norton will refornmat the drive as a fat file system.
