I think that the 4281 driver made it into 2.2.17, maybe even 2.2.16.
2.2.18 definitely has it.

Just because they automate the system doesn't mean it will slow it
down perceptablity. Using RPM, Red Hat is modular enough that you can
uninstall (or not install) almost any part you don't want and then
hack it to your liking (just like Slackware.)

ok, I've been trying forever to make open gl applications like games and
stuff work forever on my linux system. I have installed Red Hat version
7.0 which comes with Xfree86 version 4.0.1 and mesa 3.3 . and I am using
a diamond viper 550 AGP 16mg video card. X runs fine, but I can't do
anything with open gl. I have followed many tutorials, and I never get it
to work. I've installed the rpm's, and I have tried the tar.gz files and
etc. plus I've removed all the mesa files they say from Nvidia's and
others sites that may conflict. So I've installed the kernel drivers, and
the GLX drivers. now when I use the rpms, there is no change. when I
unzip and make the install files and run them, then I can't even get X to
come back up anymore. it just screws it all and the last error, (i wish I
wrote it down) is a problem loading GlX inetid or something like that.
I'm using the latest files from Nvidia's site 9-5. has anyone
successfully gotten open gl to work? if so please reply or e-mail so we
can correspond, I'll do anything!!! share files you may want who knows.
PLEASE HELP ME I'M GOING NUTS.

I was wondering if there is 3D support or if Linux fully supports the
ATI Rage Pro Turbo card(s)?
I can get 32 bit color and everything, but X Screen Saver lags really
bad on GL screensavers (I think), such as the rubrick's cube. Is this
normal? Is there something I need to install/configure? Any help would
be appreciated, thanks.

you can download it form there ftp site....just type A7V in their

Let me know if it works.....I tried it, it know recognises my disk but after

the system hangs. Probably caused by my second ATA disc a seagate..

I found how to register the ATA/66 controller in 33 mode. I managed to
install the OS to the HTP366 disk. After that though it wouldn't boot, tried
to move it to ide1 but no boot there either. I'm gonna continue today with
this and I am optimistic that it will work.

it would be easier to answer if we knew the name of the ata100
controller you're dealing with. as for the sb live, the kernel has
support for it. it's called emu10k. if it's not working already,
maybe you have to rebuild your kernel.

I am running RH7.0 on a PPro 200 / 256MB RAM, and will probably add another
soon (OpenBSD). Everything runs fine - all of the hardware is circa May
1997 (Adaptec 2940UW, S3 Virge PCI, Ensoniq AudioPCI).
This box is running Samba for my home network (PDC, print, file) as well as
DNS, etc. etc. for the home network. No problems whatsoever. I don't run an
intranet HTTP server - no need - but have plenty of power to do so
(SETI@Home normally gets 95-100% of the CPU, even when there are outgoing
network connections). Samba and a tape drive is great for automatic
backups of important files.
Only problem I've ever had is with an off brand motherboard. (EISA wouldn't
work, problems recognising SIMMs, etc.) Might want to stick to the Intel
motherboards for socket 8.
Cheers,
James

Subject: Problems configuring XFree with SiS 630 chip
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 10:58:39 +0100
Hi all,
I've problems configuring XFree for my laptop.
I've an IPC Laptop with an SiS 630 graphic chip. To install Linux I used
Suse7.0 and I tried to configure X with sax and xf86config.
But whatever tried, any mode 640x480 to 1024x768 or any config tool, the
resulting display misses lines at the bottom of my LCD screen. For
800x600
or 1024x768 also at the right of the display large amounts of pixels are
missing. For 640x480 it seems to be only few lines missing, but for the
larger modes about half the display is missing both at the bottom and at
the right.
Using xfine to change the height or the width doesn't change anything.
Is there anyone who can help?
Best regards

Old? It's modern.

Why should you care? If it doesn't, just set "mem=255M" as a boot
parameter.

No, it's way overspec'ed. A classic P100 would be fine.

a) A newsreader doesn't "act" on cancel messages. A newsreader reads
messages from a newsserver or its spool. If the server doesn't
honor the cancelation, or if it never reached the server, the reader
program will properly show you all messages, as their Message-IDs
will be different.
b) As this server (which I own) honors cancels, the error is on
your side.
c) At least, my newsreader doesn't create lines with more than 75 chars.

Subject: Dawi 2975 U + IBM 36GB =parityerror?
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 12:51:08 +0100
Hello from Germany
SCSI:
I use an IBM DDYS-T36950 (36 GB, WideScsi/Ultra SCSI/Ultra160
(I don't now the exact name of the interface)) with an DawiControl
DC-2975 U.
(ok, ist a little crasy, I know:-))
1. try:
Bootdisk IDE with Linux
Dawi(ID:7) - 50pol. cable(50 cm long) - disk with adaptor 50 to 68pol. -
active terminator 50pol at the end from the cable.
Linux 7.0 says parity-error, I can't use the disk.
hmpf.
controler is shown as ncr53c8xx , I tried some parameters with modprobe.
modprobe ncr53c8xx wide:0 diff:0 and so one, no difference.
The IBM have a jumper "force se-mode", no difference.
2. try
Win98 installed (bootdisk IBM ID:0, no IDE), ok works.
unknown error 10 with dawi.driver from disk, but no errors.
3. try.
Boot IDE
Adaptec AHA 2904 (sic) - 1 GB old disk - 36GB IBM - dualspeed old cdrom
with "on board passive terminator"
works fine with linux, short test with bonnie looks good.
I also tried some different cables.
Some Ideas ?
Thanks in advance, Peter

Subject: Installing a PCtel HSP56 MicroModem
Hi,
I want to install a PCtel HSP56 MicroModem and i have a driver found under
http://www.grapevine.net/~gromitkc/pctel/hsp56-linux-1.tar.gz
I installed it how it is described in the Readme and the driver is telling me
at the boot-process that he found my modem at IRQ 5 and Port 0xec00.
And the device-file is /dev/ttyS15.
But what is coming next? With SuSE Linux 7 (Yast2) the modem can't be
installt, and a direct call isn't working.
Can someone help me with a tip?
Ciao,
Frank

Subject: UPS and tape drive for Linux
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 17:39:04 +0100
Hi,
I'm looking for an UPS and backup tape system for a single Linux server.
The UPS must work Linux applications in order to shut the system down if
necessary. The tape drive should work with some backup utility. It is a
small server so we are looking for cheap devices.
Any comments on this devices running with Debian potato would be
apreciated.
Thanks.
