I've got one of those home made cables that use a couple of
4.7K resistors to simulate one of the cables that APC sells
for this unit. I had this working correctly (several Linux
installs ago. Might have been Debian 1.? ;) on this system but
the current version of 'apcupsd' that comes with Debian (3.2.6)
has far more cable options than I can remember. It still includes
a readme (README.cable) that describes this cable, but does
not indicate (that I can figure out, anyhow) what cable type
should be chosen in the apcupsd.conf file. I've tried several
types, but the daemon does not recognize when I pull the plug
on the UPS. It'll still get me through the minor dips that are
common, but I would like something that will shut down the
    computer during an extended outage.

Any suggestions on the right cable type or how to better test
    this would be most welcomed.

    thanks,
    hank

Does anybody have any advice on connecting an Iomega HipZip/PocketZip
(or Clik! drive or whatever Iomega is calling it this week) to an Intel
Linux machine running RH6? FAQ or How-To? It's a USB device, and I
have exactly zero experience trying anything USB on linux.

While I'm on the subject, has anybody out there poked around inside a
HipZip mp3 player? This device seems to be running an embedded
derivative of Redhat called Dadio. (See http://www.iobjects.com for
marketing hype.) It's a flashable OS running on some sort of ARM chip
(Cirrus Logic?) so I'm curious about it. There's supposedly a SDK
coming from RedHat.

Happy Holidays...

the es1371 chipset has not a sequencer (as it has not a synth). You could
reproduce midi files with a midi to wav program, as kmidi or timidity++

Any know if it is possible to emulate a hardware sequencer for these kind a
sound cards?

Using the same release as you.
Create your mount point.
place an entry in fstab.
mount the device
Read the cdrom documents.

Todays fishing lession: How to find a file.

Any time you want to find a file you can use locate

If you leave the system up overnight a cron job will create
the locate database.

Anytime you need to update/create the location database, as root, updatedb

You can use locate to find files. Example: locate -i cdrom

You can reduce the results by pipeing it through grep.
locate -i cdrom | grep -i howto.html
/usr/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/CDROM-HOWTO.html

now place the result in netscape's location box and read away

Chris,
I been trying to contact LNyT via email w/o success.
Can you tell me how you setup your USB?
What is the correct entry for /etc/fstab, ie, file system type for zip
drive, etc.
I added "none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0" to /etc/fstab
I created /mnt/zip/

When I then try to mount zip, I get error:
[root@localhost /mnt]# mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device
       (maybe `insmod driver'?)

The mouse configuration in the various X86 configuration utilities seems
to be independent from the OS configuration. I'd re-run the X configuration
utility (from yast) and check the mouse settings there.

I've got a Turtle Beach Multisound Pinnacle card and am trying to
configure it in SuSE 7.0. The two basic sound modules will load
using modprobe and insmod. But when I try to load the multisound
module, messages result saying that the device is in-use.

I've used the isapnp utility to properly set up the card's io ports,
memory location and interrupt. Isapnp reports that everything is
okay. I supply the same information when trying to load the
multisound module.

Can anyone help or point me to a good source of information?
I've gone through the Multisound documentation with a fine-toothed
comb and don't see anything I'm doing wrong.

This sounds like a flakey hardware problem. I don't think that it is
Linux related and it may not even be the CPU's but rather a seperate
hardware issue.

The fact that PC freezes although all processe were already

With Suse 6.1 and Win95 all works fine proves that the bug

You should give an exact subject e.g. "running SCSI Adaptec 1505 "

Your problem:
I have got the same SCSI-Card and an scanner attached, too.
Have you got a pnp-card (Plug&Play) or non-pnp ? - The
non-pnp-card you can switch IRQ and DMA by jumper, the
pnp-card you have to initialise by Kernel-options
at lilo-start. See linux-pnp-tool (attention: isapnp.conf
that is automatically generated is buggy! Delete "CHECK"!).

Which options did you enable in your Kernel? pnp?
SCSI-generic support? ..... What exactly have you
done?

I find it _entirely_ unremarkable that people would have serious
problems with "just about anything" on RH7, and Oracle would be a
"serious problem" that I would downright _expect_.

Our LUG has heard of enough problems that we haven't ordered any of
the "cheap RH7 CDs" so that we don't cause people problems.

On The Other Hand, I did an Oracle install a while back on a Just
Plain RH6 system, and while it was quite fiddly, with the instructions
being of as limited usefulness as R/3 install notes used to be noted
for, it wasn't _that_ much of a problem. A Saturday morning and it
was installed and running...

It might well be that the only distribution that Oracle will "certify"
as working is RH6.2EE, and taht could be the only distribution on
which they would be willing to provide you commercial support. That's
another story...
