Well the long & short of my saga was to replace the card with a
Soundblaster Live! value which worked right out of the box.
The Creative PCI128 is with me no more.

Hi: I have the same card, and it wouldn't work under Mandrake 7.1
until I disabled the "Plug and Play OS" feature in the bios. After
that, sndconfig worked. Hope this helps.

Software is getting pickier about text formatting conventions due
to internationalization and multibyte characters.
I'm not sure how that's going to help you, though, unless you'd like
to install your own print filter manually.
Not to be an apologist for Red Hat, either. This is one area where
M$ seems to be ahead.

Using Red Hat 7.0, by any chance?
This arises from an erroneous entry in /usr/share/magic which causes
/usr/bin/file to classify any file of length at least 12 with a
linefeed (0x0a) at offset 8 and a nonzero byte at either offset 11 or
12 as an "fsav (linux) virus" file. (The numbers will vary).
> Then if I vi the file and add an empty line at the top & bottom, it

The empty line at the top shifts the linefeed at offset 8 to offset 9,
and the file gets classified as text.
The quickest fix would be to comment out (or correct--I think the third and
following lines should begin with ">>") the bad entry in
/usr/share/magic.

Alastair,
I'm using my CL50 connected via the serial port, COM 2. You might have to
resort to the hardware solution of digging around for the serial adapter plug
for your Agfa, and going that route. I'm running RedHat 7--it just came out
with USB support. Now lets give the various developers time to make mods so
that it can be used.
Good luck!

I ran into the same problems with my Linksys card. Install the RPM packages
for MAKE and GCC. This will work to a point. My stumbling block is on
module compilation in that it freezes and will not create the tulip.0
module.
Keep on trying.

It may be that you are working too hard.
Either use rpm, drakerpm or kpackage ( rpm is sort of a cross between
zip and InstallShield, the other two are GUI's that wrap rpm ).
Make sure linuxconf and gnome-linuxconf are installled ( you need
gnome-linuxconf, otherwise linuxconf comes up with a crappy text
based version ).
Once there just follow your nose to configure a network, and
you will be lead to a place to configure network cards. Choose the
tulip driver and it should work.

The software is written for scsi drives, which is more or less
standard in Unix; Linux uses scsi emulation to talk to the
ide cdrom as if it were a scsi.

I've got to agree. I bought a Linksys "Fast Ethernet Network In A Box" deal
on the basis that it worked with Linux. BULLSHIT!
I don't like jumping through hoops trying to get a stupid network card
working. I gave up after a while and just got a couple 3Com 3C905 cards. I
know some will go off on me because they don't like 3Com but hey - they
worked the first time, no hassle. (Oh, and it wasn't just RH7 I was trying
to get it working with. I had the same problem with other distros.)
Even the junky Realtek cards I have work fine the first time - why does
Linksys have to be such a pain??
