Install the kernel source package, and look in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi... :-)

AMI makes RAID controllers that works under linux, the array setup is
not as user-friendly as adaptecs, but it installs as boot drive right
out of the box with a RH6.2 distro. Adaptecs new series of RAID
controllers is said to be linux compatible, but I haven't tested them
myself. The same goes for Mylex, they should be working, maybe even at
install time, but I have not tested them myself.

The Xeon is natively a 4-way CPU, i.e. it can communicate directly with
three other CPU's. There are clever chipsets however who overcome this
limitation in some for me unknown way, and thus can handle a maximum of
8 CPU's on the same motherboard. I haven't seen any technical solutions
for more than 8 CPU's.

However, to complicate things further, not all Xeons are 4-way capable,
since it involves quite a lot of testing to make shure it is. In order
to improve time-to-market, intel have several Xeon models that are only
two-way, making you wonder even more why you should use this extremely
expensive CPU, instead of clustering a number of P-III boxes together at
the same price. :-)

Yes, it is actually the USB module, which determines the driver, and this
one speaks both of these protocols.

Yes, these settings were correct, plus the linux usb-guide states that they
are only relevant for graphing tablets...

No, I was referring to the protocols.

I have actually found an article referring to this problem in the XWindows
mailing archive, it seems that this problem is specific to the _second_
mouse, no matter which one it is. So this would be an X problem, and I will
try comp.os.linux.x to find some help...

Subject: Redhat 5.2 system
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 18:37:45 GMT

I am urgently looking for someone in the SF Bay area that can configure,
test and sell me a single user P-III system for me running Red Hat 5.2.
I need this system to evaluate some older 3D software. I've already
tried the VARs. They are of no help because of the older Linux version
(no longer supported). I'm getting desperate.

The requirements are:

P-III 500 to 700 MHz
256M Ram
SCSI-II
100 Base-T Ethernet
15-20 GB HD (7200 rpm)
ELSA GLORIA video card (this might be hard - if not available,
substitute a really good card for 3D Graphics applications that is
supported.
Mouse & Keyboard
No Video Monitor required

Anyone who can help please contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I upgraded my RH7.0 kernel to 2.4.0 I am able to boot my system with
new kernel. I followed following procedure:

make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz.new

and copy the new image to /etc/lilo.conf

My problem is that it's not able to load some of the modules. What is
the procudure for loading the modules during kernel compilation or
after that?

I'm running 2.4.0 (and before it several test kernels) on a Gigabyte GA-7ZM
(KT133) mobo. It only supports UDMA 66, but the only hassle I had was
getting the onboard sound working. I've now sorted that, and it is all
working fine. I seem to remember reading that there was a problem
installing Linux-Mandrake on ATA-100 boards - since LM is RedHat based, I
assume the problem applies to other distros as well. There was a fix posted
on the Mandrake Users website (http://mandrakeuser.org) - or was it the
main Linux Mandrake site (www.linux-mandrake.com) ? I seem to recall it
specifically mentioned Asus boards, but I didn't look too closely as it
didn't apply to me......!

Hope the pointers are of some help.

Subject: Apollo SiS6326 Video Card
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 19:26:27 GMT

I have the above video card installed on a Linux box. I installed it as the
very old cirrius logic card would simply not work. I have tried setting this
up using Xconfigurator though the specific card does not appear on the list I
have selected various SiS6326 cards all with the same result.

In the test screen all the lettering is simply black. This is also the case
if I agree to the settings and run X. All other graphics are OK, appart from
the odd desktop icon which is white. The mouse works fine.

Any ideas?

The PC is an old K5 100 that was my wifes before we upgraded everything
recently. It has 3 HDs (total 2.3 GB) one Intel Network Card and SB
compatible sound card with 16MB ram. I want to use it as a printserver and
occaisionally run some data analysis software on it that runs under Linux.

If I cant get this to work I will have to consider running it as basic NT 4.0
box (cough choke spit) as we need the print server function...

Can someone save me this!

Sim.

I would like to thank to all whom had responded to my post regardless you
had provided me the necessity information for what I am looking for or not.
It looked to me that most of you had suggested that I should consider a
null serial cable connection between the computer. Believe it or not, I
have had looked into this option before my first post to no avial because
the serial ports of both computer are already pre-occupied with serial
devices. The only available resources I have on both computers are the
modems. Because I am not looking for a high speed connection and am also
trying to save some money (for not buying a hub/switch, an ethernet card,
and two telephone lines), I am thinking if it is possible for me to make
these two computer physically connected using PPP by means of the modems.
I will be very happy if I can get a 14.4 Kbps connection between the
computer. As mentioned in one of the response, I should be able to get a
33.6 Kbps connection which is even better and beyond my expectation. So,
if I had to reiterate my needs for this situation, will it be possible to
connect two computers using PPP by means of the only available hardware
resource: modems?

Are you saying if I need to connect two computers using a PPP connection
through their modems, then it is doable as what you mentioned on the above
paragraph? If so, then you have just answered my questions. BTW, do you
know of any docs that may be able to help me out to perform just said?

I wished so. However, both the computers have already exhausted their
serial and parallel ports for some other devices. Of course, I can spend
more money to add more serial ports or a hub + an ethernet card or even two
telephone lines. However, I am trying to save some money and am hoping the
existence of modems on both computers will suffice for my need with a low
end connection. In this matter, I am hoping to get a 14.4 Kbps, only,
although a higher connection is more than welcome.

It's not. The previous Dynalink card was supported as an ASUSCOM card, the
card you're talking about (which I recently bought and installed on RH6.2)
seems to be supported as a "Winbond W6692 based card" (from my 6.2 config).

Check this out, let me know if you have more problems.

It's in the linux source-tree that you can get almost everywhere.

As for bang for the dollar, if you want that, you wouldn't want U2W raid.
If you have to mind the dollars, I'd suggest getting a 3ware ide-raid card
and some 75 Gb ibm ide drives. As for the most bang:

I see another kind usenetter has given some suggestions for raid-cards.
I'd like to add ICP-Vortex to those. I've read tests that suggested that
they have the best performance and the best monitoring tools. They have
their own website @ www.icp-vortex.com, and are also used in the
hardware that SuSE sells @ www.suse.com

Good luck,
Jurriaan

Subject: Troubles with olicom ISA/IV ethernet card
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 21:24:26 +0100

Hi, greetings to all the ng.

I'm having troubles using an Olicom ISA/IV ethernet card. I configured
the card, using the eepro module, and it seems working, the only wrong
thing seems to be the following message that appears on the console
after the command "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 up". The answer is:

eth0: set Rx mode to 1 address

repeated 3 times.

At this point I try to ping the computer with 192.168.1.1 IP address,
but the response is: host ureachable.

If I run tcpdump on the computer with 192.168.1.1 IP address, I can see
that it receives the arp who-has request from 192.168.1.4, and it's
response, but the response doesn't seems to be received.

Hardware seems to be ok, 'cause the connections works properly if I boot
from win on the computer equipped with the olicom ethernet card.

Suggestions are welcome, but, just to avoid you waste your precious
time, the routing table is configured correctly (a route to the
192.168.1.0 network is set up, and I added a static route for each
computer to the other one), and no firewall system is running.

I think the key is in that message "eth0: set Rx mode to 1 address", but
I don't know it's meaning...

Thanks in advance.

kalb

How closely is Mandrake based on RedHat?

If they are remaining in step, then RH and Mandrake should be out about
the same time.

Course any user of either system can compile their own kernel.....it
isn't hard (for an experienced and curious PC user.....or an
inepxerienced, careful one with good reading comprehension skills).
