<Snap off> if it is a winmodem, the fact that it
> works with wintendoze is irrelevant.

I'm sorry to get personal here. But have to say this.

It's about Linux. Have you ever tried to use this Operating System? yes..
Good Luck.
You can't get nothing done there.

First word come RE COMPLE. What is that?
Well they won't tell you but say to you RE COMPLEEEEEEEEEE.

It really means that In Linux you can't install program like we do in
windows, NT, or even in Mac.

And Linux is very SENSITIVE. How is that? Well all the words have to be
exactly big or small other wise it won't read it.

Now comes grand finally. You installed Linux some how in your computer after
all fdisk, lilo and other halaballooo.

Now you gotta configure your Mouse, Video Card, Modem and all what ever you
bought for PC windows, Mac or whatever,

Sure one won't mind doing all this things. BUT LINUX DOESN'T MAKE IT
EASYYYYYYYY.
There are noooo simple way to do it.

Too much info and all info seems garbage because there are too many sect of
linux and all of them hate each other. Finally if you get information from
some linux user about what ever you have, it won't worth it, ironically they
will blame you for having bad modem and IT'S NO RELEVEANT IF YOUR WINDOWS IS
FINE WITH MODEM/ETC, what count it's LINUX UN fix and UN stable program for
multimedia, devices.

My point of typing this is that don't insult Windows b/c linux look lot
stupid and lot UN organize. Microsoft Windows, Mac and OS/2 are easy. Linux
(sects) are not, they have to be "educated" about what I have in our
computer. It's an amateur operating system only powerful for networking
which is not done BY 100% POPULATION. Over 90% people do multimedia and
typing writing and surfing and want easy and comfort not painful program.

Sorry buddy, you linux loses in all front, by the way how come linux can't
use CPU 1000MHZ? Guess it's Intel and Amd fault too huh?

Please don't insult Microsoft or it will spit you back far worse then you
can imagine. Even Child can use windows me, Mac and OS/2 but can we say same
about linux??????? NOOOOO why ? b/c
Children need to learn as much as linux so 2 thing are not at same path.

Anyway.....
Respectfully
Tina

too much windows user but comfort is one thing i look for and it's not what
I'm geting.
Worst thing in microsoft is that, they are taking away my freedom :(. In
windows me I can't use autoexec.bat or config.sys B/C IT'S FOR FAST
LOADING.......
THEY SUCKS B/C I WANT TO CONTROL MY WINDOWS but I don't get that. and right
now I'm verrrrrry angry I spent 2 hours and got nothing done in linxu :(((((
I have no idea how to recompile this stuffff and Corel Linux is verrrrrry
stupid.. I had chance to buy redhate one but I got this one :( which is not
nice at allllll.

Yes, but only just, I bought it yesterday...

Installed on an Initio Ini9100UW alongside 1CD and 2HD's. My first
tests all ended with errors and after much faffing around I discovered
that I had a bad rewritable disk that I was using to test with. It was
rated as 2X but will only write at 1X. Switched to using the 10X CD-RW
disk that Plextor provide and it worked perfectly. Subsequently burnt
an 8X CD-R perfectly and that problematic CD-RW at 1X.

So far, easy to install, (though the default of jumpering it so that
termination is on might catch a few people), documentation good.
Price... ridiculously expensive! Over in the UK, UK£260 for the 1210Si
vs £165 for the ATAPI version.

I had to download the source for cdrecord 1.9-final and compile it to
get the "Burn Proof" capability recognised. SuSe 6.3 ships some
ancient release and the one I downloaded from the ftp site for 7.0 was
only just a little newer. The one fron rufus.w3.org that was signed by
RedHat wanted rpm 4 but got rm'ed instead ;-)

Then go look elsewhere. Freedom != comfort. You do it yourself to get
it the way you want it. If you aren't comfortable, then you take advantage
of your freedom to change it to suit you or you PAY someone to change it
for you. Those are your freedoms.

Bawling like a child isn't going to do it for you. Try learning how to
do it, then doing it, if that's what turns you on, but distros exist
precisely so you don't have to do that. When you buy a distro, you buy
their expertise and efort in putting together binaries for you. You
don't have to do it yourself.

Hi Jerry,

Virtually all motherboards that work with Windows work with Linux. It would
be much easier to concentrate on obtaining information about those
motherboards that currently have problems.

As at September 1999 virtually no motherboard was unsupported:

This is probably a very good thing to try to do, good luck.

I have a Tyan Tiger 133c, dual processor board that works, but not well,
I don't recommend it.
I have a Asus dual processor board that works, and works great.

In my setup, both these boards have the same amount of memory, same CPU
speed, same Linux kernel, same hard disks, but the Tyan board takes
2x-4x longer to do thing the exact same thing.

Next time I reboot, I'll tell you the exact make models, but that may be
months from now.

When I first started in Linux, I was totally confused too. There is
just too much to understand all at once. Yet, when you do grasp
what's going on, it is pretty straightforward. So the problem is to
get you past the initial frustration.

For that, the best bet is to find a Linux user who can sit down with
you and your system, and get it configured the way you want. A local
"Linux Users Group" (lug) would be a good bet. Our local chapter has
a "boot fest" beore each meeting. You bring your system, and the
whole group helps you get hooked up. Everything from checking
hardware, to inserting cards, to install, to configuration, to helpful
hints. If you can't find a LUG, *any* Linux user can probably help
with this.

At your current level of expertise, I don't think we can do much over
the newsgroups, without someone at your end physically working with
you. However, here is a shot:

To install, you (usually) need to be able to run as root. Do you
remember your root password? (from when you installed the system).
Generally, you stay away from root as much as possible. But to avoid
lots of confusion, I'll suggest that this time you do the whole make,
install, configure as root.

Next, you need to make a place to do compiling. Let's assume you have
enough room in /usr/local to work:

su - (change to root; it will ask for root password)
    cd /usr/local
mkdir src (make the "source" dir, if there isn't one already)
chmod a+rwx src (make it writeable by anyone (not just root))
mkdir wvdial (make a working dir)
    cd wvdial

Now, copy the wvdial...tar.gz file to here. I'll assume you have
verison 1.0.0, but use whatever numbers you actually have. And I'll
assume the wvdial file is at "wherever", but fill that in correctly too:
    cp /wherever/wvdial-1.0.0.tar.gz .
The "cp" (copy) command copies from somewhere to somewhere. In this
case, the "to" is the current dir, which is known as ".".

Now, unzip and untar. Here is a command which works on all version of
gzip and tar:
   gzip -cd wvdial-1.0.0.tar.gz | tar xvf -
In other words, run Gnu's zip program (gzip) in decompress mode (d),
to stdout (c), and pipe (|) that to the tar program (tape archive)
which then extracts (x) verbosely (v) from a file (f) which happens to
be stdin (-).

The result is a dir, so go into that:
   cd wvdial-1.0.0
Using your editor, look at the README file. You will find:
"To build and install WvDial, then:
        make
        make install
"

Now you are ready to actually use wvdialconf. From the README:.

"The first thing to do is have wvdialconf detect your modem and create your
initial configuration. 'su' to root and type the following:
        wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
"

Except, of course, you are already root, so just run the command.

NOTE:
I've got a web page on tools you might want to install,
and the general installation process.
  http://www.seanet.com/~hgg9140/comp/toolkit/index.html
  http://www.seanet.com/~hgg9140/comp/toolkit/doc/install_user.html

Don't bother reading it now, but wen you get more familiar with Linux,
that is an effective approach to installing lots of "tarballs" (the
files with ".tar.gz")
