What I am going to do is not for commercial. The dial-ins I will be
providing are going to be by my friends as well as myself when I am not at
home. What could my provider, the cable company, complain about?
It's hard to fine a 56Kbps dial-in modem. All the 56Kbps modem that I
know of only have 33.6 Kbps uplink and when my friends do dial-in, they
will only get 33,6 Kbps, not 56 Kbps.

All of this got started because someone made a flippant remark about
winmodems not working under linux?? Bit of an overreaction on your part.
Of course, you may perceive that the rest of the world (or at least
those responding to your ranting) is against you. They call that
paranoia. You can seek treatment.
But to the point, linux doesn't differ much from other unixes - they're
not intended to be single user, consumer PC operating systems. They
take work to get up & running, some of that work involves reading the
manuals and other documentation, especially the hardware compatibility
lists (in which you may find that your modem doesn't work under linux).
If you don't like linux, don't use it. If you have to learn linux for
school course or project, your time would be better spent reading the
documentation than venting your spleen. linux ain't gonna change just
because you throw a temper tantrum or two (or more).
So what's it going to be: are you too stupid to stop using linux, too
stupid to figure out how to use linux, or too stupid to realize these
(and perhaps other options, like shutting up and getting to work) are
your choices?

recently i replaced an old motherboard (gigabyte ga586 atv, intel vx

I really think you need someone there physically looking at your
system. Perhaps you could post which city you are in/near, and
someone could tell you where a local LUG could help out. I suspect
you have an incomplete installation, and a few quick fixes would get
you in business -- but only someone with access to your system could
figure out what those fixes might be.
If "make" actually is missing, chances are the whole "gcc" compile
suite is as well, which means you are not going to get wvdial
compiled. Alternatively, make and gcc are there, but you can't see
them from root. If you were running as root, you typically have
a very minimal PATH (places the system looks for binaries). So root
sometimes has to spell out the whole path, e.g,:
/usr/bin/make
/usr/bin/make install
You can:
a) look in /usr/bin to see if "make" is there
b) run "locate make" (as yourself) to see where else it might be
c) check root's default path "echo $PATH" to see if make's full path
is covered
d) use the full path (remember to use "/", not "\")
To be honest, I'll have to give up at this point. If you really are
incapable of using the HOWTO's and cannot contact a local Linux user,
you would have to post massive amounts of information beore we could
help much more.

Hi,
I never had problems with corrupt files. Some problem I had is that
gramofile seems to write wrong information in the wav-header
converning the lenght of the file. cdrecord for example often says
that the file seems to be truncated and it will use the true length.
But all I recorded was always there....

I recently succumbed to the tempation of installing RedHat 7 ...
After some considerable partitioning issues, I THINK I finally
have everything running okay ...
With one exception -- when I first run startx, the screen is
shifted about 30 pixels to the right of where it is in Windows ME.
Now I can use xvidtune to get it shifted to where I want it, but
I can't seem to get it to stay in the right spot on reboot.
I have Fetched the number from xvidtune and put them where I think
they're supposed to be in /etc/X11/XF86Config but still no luck.
Any suggestions?

I have an Athlon Tbird 800MHz, 256Mb RAM, GeForce2 GTS (64MB DDR RAM). and
most standard computergame-like MPEG movies play just fine, but when it
comes to highquality DVD movies, it just can't catch up so it's relaxing to
watch a movie, I haven't tryed the Xv extension, whatever that is, but
still I think I need a MPEG2 card for playing DVD movies without
disturbings. Or maybe a quatro-Tbird 1GHz can do it as well.
I found some resources on
http://www.linuxvideo.org/user/res.html
and yes you are right about the hollywood chipset
thanks anyway!

hi there
just note the prober freq (the number on the most left) and resolution
mode from the output of xvidtune then look for them
in /etc/X11/XF86Config and substitute the line in this file which
begins with the mode and freq with the output of xvidtune
then restart X and everything will be ok

I'm thinking about buying a DVD decoder card. my dvd drive came with
my system, but had win98 specific decorder software. I'm wondering if
a hardware decoder will help play dvds with linux. The dvd howto
seemingly only addresses software decoding. Are there advantages to
getting a decoder card? does linux utilize a decoder card when playing
dvds? I would like to here from both sides:

I use kppp myself and the problem you are having is as Peter suggested the
modem not responding to the initialise command. Basically if your modem is
based on Lucent chips it won't work. Lucent have released drivers for
their chipset but the driver in my experience is buggy and does not work so
I would go with an external modem as you suggested yourself. Any external
modem which connects to your seriel port will work and is easy to set up.
I would go with a Diamond modem, US Robotics or Motorola. Once you install
the external modem just try to use kppp again but this time go to
setup/modem and select ttys0 as the device and dial again. Hopefully that
should work and you will then be online.
Have fun and I hope that helps.

Did you remove all other mode lines for the same resolution, to make
