If U don't need 3D, then U don't need 32mb. You can easily run a desktop of
1024x786 on 8mb or less in 65K colors.....

I have a Trenton SLE single board computer with an onboard QLogic ISP10160
SCSI. I can't get the driver to load. I am running Redhat 6.2 and
2.2.18/RTLinux.
I tried the RedHat 6.2 CDROM and it claims there are no devices although
the BIOS detected them with no problem. The drives are actually SCSI-3(
Baracuda, Quantum Fireball) and SCSI-2 (DAT Tape with 50/68 adapter).
If I use a Trenton DP2 SBC which uses an Adaptec AIC-7880 SCSI everything
is fine.

I use SMC 1211TX (or something similar) and they use the RealTek 8139
drivers, and work great.. You might need to specify an "append" line in
the lilo configuration (or type it into the LILO: prompt when booting).
So you'd either add the line as such, or at the LILO prompt type "linux
ether=0,0,eth0" or such.
The kernel boot messages will definately show the card if it's there..
Make sure there is an available irq.
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.1

root = /dev/hda3

Why's that an obstacle? You only have to do it for the duration of the
install! Afterwards, install promises drivers in the kernel (compile)
change the drive "letter" in /etc/fstab and reboot .. you'll lahev top
give lilo and explicit root=/dev/hdeblah clue as to where to go, but
once you're in, edit lilo.conf, and run lilo, and it'll all be set up
for the next time.

Okay, to add some information to my previous post..
I think that USB itself is okay.. Plugging and unplugging the Smart
Media adaptor dumps a lot of stuff into the logs about vendor codes,
etc.. I'm not sure that hotplug recognises the vendor/id though..
My USB keyboard works now, /etc/rc.d/init.d/hotplug status shows lots of
USB stats, including:
USB up; bus count is 1
T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2
P: Vendor=0000 ProdID=0000 Rev= 0.00

P: Vendor=045e ProdID=000b Rev= 1.04
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=hid
Not sure which lines go with which, but anywho.. I think it must be the
actual SCSI emulation tying to the USB.. (the scsi-emulation has been
in use for over a year with my IDE CD burner and is working fine now,
and normal direct SCSI is working fine with my CD ROM.)
I hope someone can help! Again, Dane-Elec gave me the email address of
their driver guy who will share his code, so if this reader isn't
supported currently it shouldn't be heard to impliment.
Thanks!

Hi Folks,
just wanted to share the solution of my problem with you all :)
Actually, after trying to find out if the problem was reproductible, I
found out that whenever I had a high harddisk-Load on the SCSI-Subsystem,
and I initiated a high-network-Traffic, the System Hung. Trying to find out
what it was - I didn't succeed, but after getting the new ne2k-pci driver
from Donald-Beckers Site, recompiling that one, adn using that one isntead
of the plain- Mandrake-7.2 2.2.17-21mdk kernel solved the Problem. I can
now copy Gigs of files around the Harddisk subsystems while downloading
loads of files through the net - and the System is stable.
So - if you have such a problem with an ASUS A7V133 and similar setup - try
changing the Network-card drivers.

Why do you need a 32MB card if you don't want 3D acceleration? Very strange.
Even for a 21'-Monitor a 8MB card is more than enough.
I've got a Diamond Stealth S540 (32MB), superior 2D quality but moderate 3D
acceleration compared to this new bell and whistles Geforce stuff and it was
very cheap (70USD).
Maybe you can grab one from ebay. Don't buy cheap Geforce or TNT2 cards,
because of their very bad 2D quality.

hear the test sound (it lists the sound as a midi), and in playing "DOS"

I am new to Linux and I have an IDE HP Colorado 8gb Tape Drive that I

I see that during the boot up Linux sees the tape drive. Also, HardDrake
recognizes the

I can use the tar command: tar -cvf /dev/ht0 /etc and it will write to

When I try to read the tape with:tar -tvf /dev/ht0
I get this tar: /dev/ht0: Cannot read: Input/output error
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
I am running Mandrake 7.2 on an AMD k6-2/350 with 192mb. The tape drive
is the second device

What do I have to do to troubleshoot this?

You mean "while logged in as a normal user, I can't play sounds, but
if I log in as root, I can play sounds"? If this is the case, it's a
permissions problem. Fix it like so:
mymachine# chmod 666 /dev/mixer /dev/dsp*
Some distros don't let just anyone read/write to the audio device
for security reasons. Did you install Mandrake in paranoid mode?

Why is your card in promisuous mode?? This is not a normal state of

Normal, Twisted Pair (BaseT wiring).

Remote Procedure Call, usually used by nfs (Network File Services) to
export / import volumes / directories between unix boxes. Did you have
any nfs mounts that you disconnected the ethernet cable from and never
unmounted the volume before you did that?
If you are not using nfs, then you have a serious problem, someone has
nfs running on your machine (or someother RPC service, nfs is not the
only one, just the most common rpc service).

What do you mean by "while in LM"??? Is that a game, window manager, or
what???

Yes, be more specific when describing this problem, for example HOW did
you ""test" the configuration". Are you assuming that we were looking
over your shoulder at the time you were trying to get the sound working
and have only to utter what your mistake was???
Be clear, be concise. Otherwise your posting just gets ignored as

Check to see if the card exists in the /proc/ioports, if not, then
rebuild the kernel and make the Sis900 network driver part of the kernel
<*> instead of a module <M>. Install that kernel (remember to also
'make modules ; make modules_install ; depmod -a'), then after
rebooting, run netconfig (or Suse equivilant) to configure the network
interface. You have to configure the interface (IP address, etc) to
make it show up in ifconfig.
