I installed Linux 5.2 using my Sony CDU-711 (IDE) and the autoboot
command. Autoboot found the CDROM with no problem and the install went
correctly. Now, when I boot Linux it does not show up as anything (i.e.
hba, hdb, hdc, or hdd) and when I try to run the mount command for the
IDE device where it should be located I get an error. Do Sony drives
need special command lines at boot? I wouldn't imagine so being that it
worked fine during installation during autoboot.

I am scouting around for a small dc pump for a liquid-cooled cpu project.
The water jacket and radiator are trivial to build... but most fishtank
pumps are too big and don't like to have their speed varied.. 8-/

Any sources? My linux box begs for this useless add-on!

Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Just be aware of the risk.

Since you're on a tight budget, don't even think about SCSI. It really
drives up the cost, and UDMA hard drives can perform competitively to
low-end SCSI.

Don't know about scanners, but ATAPI CD writers work well with SCSI
emulation under Linux.

Well it depends on what you want to do. Generally SMP won't help for
office desktop use, but if you will have multiple independent processes
each needing significant CPU, it can help a lot. Of course you have to
balance this against the cost of a more modern (faster) single CPU.

I don't know about Slackware, but with the fdisk supplied with Redhat
5.2 you have to go into its 'expert' menu and change to the exact number
of LBA cylinders, which in your case ought to be something like 2080.
Then return to the fdisk main menu to partition the drive.

If you don't know the exact number of LBA cylinders, download the free
DOS program PARTINFO.EXE from the QualComm website (publishers
of the Partition Magic program).

   Whatever the reason for your desire to insure there is no
electricity on the board then you probably will want to drain the
capacitors on the board also or at least vigure the drain time
and hold your line off for this time.

I'm using RedHat 5.1 and Slackware 3.5. Both will install on my Pac.
Bell 486/100. I'm trying to install on a Pentium (Intel) 166 with
Award BIOS w/ PnP Extension.

My problem is the following:

With Slackware:
Everything seems to be going good with the bootdisk. When prompted for
the rootdisk I get the following:

VFS: Insert root floppy ....
RAMDISK: Minix filesystem found at block 0
RAMDISK: Loading 1440 blocks into ramdisk... floppy 0; timeout handler
died; do fd request
done.
Java Binary support...
VFS: Mounted root (minix filesystem)

It just hangs there.

Now, with RedHat I get:

Welcome to RedHat Linux
I hit enter and it starts loading, then;
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at Block 0
EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended
bdflush() activated ... sleeping again
bdflush() activated ... sleeping again
bdflush() activated ... sleeping again

And hangs here too.

I've tried booting off the CD for Redhat (autoboot) and have made new
boot and root disks.

I've checked the NG's for similar problems but haven't found any. I
did get one email saying it's been seen on Compaq PC's but never got
back to me on a solution.

If you are new to Linux, it may be well worth your while to purchase a
copy of something like RedHat that includes technical support.

Redhat maintains a very good hardware compatibility list at:

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/intel/rh52-hardware-intel.html

This is not to say that other hardware is not supported by Linux
(quite a bit is, in fact) but the staff at Redhat will actually help
you get anything on that list working.

According to the list of Red Hat, hardly any of my components are compatible ...

I've ordered the SuSE 6.0 distribution.

I don't know if this list of Red Hat is really up to date, because I know that the
Diamond Viper 550 is supported (at least by SuSE), and it isn't mentioned.

I have one sitting in my drawer right now. It is a win modem (meaning it has
no brains). Windows is the true modem when you use that one. Always get a
modem that is external, or at least one that has jumpers on it to enable you
to select com ports, etc.
