I'm very new to linux, so I may be totally wrong here, but I know I had to
use SCSI emulation to use a CDRW on my Suse 7.1 box.

It seems that a newer version of mpg123 works properly. Oops. :) I
didn't know there was anything wrong with the one I had, because it
worked fine with my old card.. (i.e. on my old box.)

Subject: "Busmaster 1, dirty" errors with my (slow) IP Masq (SNAT) firewall...
Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 01:44:18 GMT
Here's the long story: For a long time, I've been having problems with slow
connections between my internal network and the internet (connected to @Home
currently). I decided to try and fix the problem, so I looked around for info
about my problem. I read that RedHat has a problem with their kernels for IP
Masq. (I use Mandrake.) So, when I noticed that the 2.4 kernel was official
(at 2.4.3), I upgraded the kernel.
Damn, that was a @*!$ing mistake! It would be nice when the kernel is in a
stable release -AND- the tools were actually current for it! IPTables, the new
/proc/sys/net system, and the lack of "netstat -M" were highly annoying, as well
as the fact that the "-j MASQUERADE" command they keep advertising on Rusty's
NAT HOWTO didn't do jack sh*t! (I finally had to do "-j SNAT", and I have no
idea why the MASQUERADE doesn't work.)
Anyway, 10 hours later, my problem isn't fixed. But now, I get error messages
on my LOCAL CONSOLE (very annoying) that sez:
Flags: bus-master 1, dirty 8000(0) current 8000(0)
Transmit list 00000000 vs. c216a200.
Followed by a list of 0-15 registers. I have two network cards:
00:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RT8139 (rev 10)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RT8139
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
I/O ports at e400 [size=256]
Memory at e5001000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Vital Product Data
00:10.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone] (rev
64)
Subsystem: 3Com Corporation: Unknown device 9055
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
I/O ports at e800 [size=128]
Memory at e5000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128]
Expansion ROM at e4000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1
As you can see, there are no IRQ conflicts, so what's the problem? It only
happens when my computer (internal computer running Linux/X) is trying to access
something on the Internet, and only sometimes, like when it's trying to get a
FTP directory, or on a few times when it's accessing the web. I imagine this is
the cause of the slow problems with my VPN-to-Internet access. (The firewall
can download normally as a fast speed.) But, I don't know how to fix this.
Anybody have any answers?
(PS.: Please reply by both e-mail and newsgroup. I don't subscribe to any
newsgroups, but I'd like this information in the public records.)

There is a Red Hat 7.0 driver. Adaptec is working hard at continuing to
train technical support. Many have been through training. I have faith
that experience will greatly enhance their ability to provide support under
Linux.
The next development phase of http://linux.adaptec.com should be happening
soon along with some facelifts, the new and improved 2.x driver, and
additional SCSI/NIC drivers and patches on the website.

See which kernel you use. With the kernel 2.4 I think the problem is resolved
(I said I THINK),but usually Linux does not like
Winmodems or internal modems at all.
Better use the cheapest external modem you can find.
What was it again what i used?ComWise?Korean made.Worked fine with linux

A bunch of the ISA types work fine too. Oddly, the SIIG SCSI cards work but
for hard drives only. The only reason a SIIG SCSI card would work with a hard
drive is becuse the computer can read the hard drive with no OS booted yet.
But the printer fitting cards work just fine.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 3 Apr 2001 23:49:57 -0600
I have a 200 MHz pentium that I had dual booting with Red Hat and Win 98
for over a year. I decided to buy another PC for Linux and made my 200
a Win 98 only box. I have tried installing 98 several times and get DLL
errors when I try to open Explorer (which is basically the whole OS in
Windows). I then tried to install Win 95 and I get errors with Explorer
but with a different DLL. These errors occur after a clean install of
98/95 some I'm betting it's something hardware related. I ran a
diagnostic tool and it did not find any errors. Both 98 and 95 report
my full amount of memory (64 Megs). My wife says she took the RAM out a
few days ago to see if some RAM from another machine could be added to
the 200.
I'm guessing it's a memory issue since I get DLL errors with Explorer.
I also removed two of the SIMMS and the DLL problems went away, at least
with Win 95.
Could she have fried the computer doing this? Our manual says not to
mix Fast Page memory w/ EDO. What would happen if she did?
I can I tell the difference between EDO and Fast Page memory? I have
two SIMMS labeled as EDO, but two more that came w/ the computer that
are not labeled.
Note: I also used a Slackware live boot CD-ROM and after it booted, it
reported 64 Megs.

Solaris CDs are a bit different than "normal" CD-ROMs. As you stated, they
contain UFS images and an ISO image with special boot flags.
Check out the man page for mkisofs, specifically the -B option (which deals
with making Sparc Bootable CD-ROMs). You might also need the -sparc-label
option for making a boot label.
They also use RockRidge extensions, but NOT Joliet.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head. I'll look up the rest
(we do a lot of these at my office).

I've seen this "warble" (I'd say wobble) in one 2nd floor corner of our
office and it seems to vary with monitor brand and vertical sync frequency
- the video card used doesn't seem to matter. This is a small office
building and the main power cable is routed along the outside top of that
corner of the wall before it goes down to the ground and into the basement.
The effect is worst when the A/C is running - IOW large draw on the main
power - and you can see it worsen as an A/C compressor kicks in.
I'm not sure if the effect is caused by the the pulsing field around the
main power cable affecting the monitor circuits directly or if it's carried
into the monitor through its power or signal cables but there doesn't seem
to be a cure and the "quality" of the monitor doesn't seem to make a
difference. I found that a 17" Mitsubishi monitor was badly affected but
in the same position a 17" Viewsonic show no effects at all... and yet
another 17" Viewsonic (same model) nearby is moderately disturbed.
Sometimes you just have to admit: "this is out of my control".:-)

Remember some people have bad eyes and don't want to admit just how bad
they are. I have people who'll run 800x600 with a 19" because they can
read it; I also have people who'll run 1152x864 at 60Hz (monitor won't do
better) rather than 1024x768 at 75 or 85Hz on a 17" because they can
squeeze more stuff on the screen. I've showed them "how much better" it
looks at higher vertical frequency but they don't get it.<shrug>

PS/2 mouse connected. When I try to use the mouse from within linux
(e.g. using gpm or X11), the mouse and the keyboard are locked,
not even the num lock key does respond anymore. Remote login

3.cd /usr/src/linux/ then "make mrproper"
4.make oldconfig
( I have produced 2 config.h files for /usr/src/linux and
/usr/src/linux/pcmcai-cs-3.1.19 before updating kernel
by the following two command:
/usr/src/linue => make menuconfig => produce config.h
/usr/src/linux/pcmcai-cs-3.1.19=>make config =>produce config.h
)
5. make dep
6. make clean
7. make bzImage
8. cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
9. vi /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/boot/vmlinuz.2.2.16-22 change to boot=/boot/bzImage
10. lilo -v -v -v , then sync;sync;sync
11. reboot
12.
Loading linux.............
Uncompressing Linux.........OK,boot the kernel.
(Then the system just hang on )
A.Does anyone know why ?
B.Do I have to execute "make config" instead of "step 4:make oldconfig"?
C.My friend told me that I have to execute "make config" to answer 100-200
questions of Linux OS correctly. If I don't answer some questions
correctly
, it is easy for linux not booting. Is it true??
