I thought that Mandrake and RedHat set things up so that the user who
logs in on the console (or into X via xdm or kdm on the console) gets
temporary ownership of many device files like /dev/fd0. If so, that
would explain why the kde desktop can access it. But it wouldn't
explain why you have trouble accessing it from the console.

Hi, Does anyone have any success with using a flat panel monitor with Linux? If so, I
would appreciate if you could post the details.

Iam currently running Linux Mandrake 7.2, but would be moving to 8.0 soon. I have a
Matrox Millennium G400 (Dual head) AGP card. Iam thinking of buying a flat panel
monitor, but want to make sure I can use it under Linux.

Thanks, nram

ok i dont know if this will work but you can try it. use modemtool to make
your modem /dev/modem then connect using /dev/modem I did this last
time I used a modem(been a long time). hit alt-F2 in kde and type modemtool
.

Stuart
PS i think mandrake has modemtool i know redhat does GOOD LUCK!!

Hi!

System: Abit KT7A-RAID, Athlon TB 900, 256 MB ram, Linux 2.2.17 and
2.4.2, Mandrake 7.2.

Problem: I'm testing the lm-sensors package under Mandrake 7.2, with
both the kernels (recompiled from scratch) and I've noticed that the
temperatures agree with both the Bios and the Win98 Utility.
The problem is the following: when the computer isn't working, under
Win98 the CPU temp. goes slowly to 32C, while when I play a nice game it
grows to 45C.
Under Linux, whatever I do (with both the kernels and with a load of
zero% (no running program)), the CPU temp goes to 45C and stops there!
I've tried to insert the apm support with the idle calls abilied in the
kernel, but the CPU temp is always that of a system working at 100%.
With kernel 2.4.2 the process "kapm-idled" (pid=3) uses 60% CPU.

Is this a know bug? Is this a bug at all? Any solution to put the CPU
in a real idle state?

 Thanks!

 Lino

What do you mean boot kernel? The one you install with? This is the one
installed by the installer for me:

[hal@feenix hal]$ uname -a
Linux feenix 2.4.2-2smp #1 SMP Sun Apr 8 20:21:34 EDT 2001 i686 unknown

It's on the CD. Have you tried that? If that does not work, then there
is a problem ;) If it does work, your hand make config is fubar.

At least some of the QVision cards were rebadged Matrox Millennium

To get back to the original request, such bridgeboards
were common on old Sun 3 or earlier equipment, and also
similar boards for tape drives and ???? ( non-scsi- non FM)
drives ( lost the name ). So you might look in old Sun
boneyards.

You need to learn to quote correctly. The way you've quoted this looks like

the first.

And you magically know when nobody is looking at it, how? You have to go
around to each terminal and find out.

And what if the terminal is never reset? What if you need the change to
take effect immediately (suppose you add some information that must be
included in all work orders)? What if the change requires modifying the
tables of the database so that the old application is no longer compatible,
or the old application could corrupt the new data?

My point is simply that HTML based programs do have advantages.

I aalso don't understand the apm code - and don't like it. It looks to
me as though it might run in a busy loop when the bios returns a
success code to every idle call, but doesn't really idle.

Get a working bios and talk to the apm code author about it.

BTW, how did you adjust the lm-sensors algoritm to your cpu? That
45C you report might perfectly well be 32C.

Well, frankly, without calibration, how can you tell? Put a
thermomenter inside and see what it says.

Do you have CONFIG_NOHIGHMEM set to 4GB? I think that with >1GB RAM
then you need it. It's the High Memory support option under Processor
