Hi Tyron,
First, when you post can you reduce the number cross-postings you do. A
small number is fine, but there is no need to blanket every where.
> I'm new to Linux and I need to know how to install a driver for my network

> any install instructions on SMC's web site. They just link directly to the
> driver file:
If you take a look at the bottom of the file you will find the following:
*
* Local variables:
*compile-command:"gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c
rtl8139.c `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`"
*SMP-compile-command: "gcc -D__SMP__ -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-pro
totypes -O6 -c rtl8139.c `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo
-DMODVERSIONS`"
*
Effectively, you need to ensure that you have installed the kernel source onto
your system and then you need to compile the module by issuing the command
line:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c rtl8139.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
This will generate a rtl8139.o file. To test to make sure that the driver
works, you should be able to load the module by using the command: "insmod
rtl8139". If all goes well, you should then be able to put it into a
directory like /lib/modules/<kernel number>/net.
You would then need to edit your /etc/modules.conf file and add a line like:
alias eth0 rtl8139
However, the file that SMC is pointing you to seems to be old. You might like
to take a look at Donald Beckers web site: http://www.scyld.com/network which
has a later version of the RTL8139 driver on it.
You will need to check out his site to see how you go about installing his
drivers.
See ya
Dean Thompson

Subject: lm_sensors & pcchips M810LMR ?
Date: Mon, 28 May 2001 09:14:36 +0100
I was wondering if anyone has managed to get lm_sensors to work with a
pcchips M810LMR motherboard ?
I'm using RedHat 7.1 and lm_sensors 2.2.5.
sensors-detect suggests its an sis5595 but when I try to load the
sis5595 module it gives me,
.
Do you want to probe now? (YES/no):
Probing for PCI bus adapters...
Use driver `i2c-sis5595' for device 00:01.0: Silicon Integrated
Systems SIS5595
Probe succesfully concluded.
We will now try to load each adapter module in turn.
Load `i2c-sis5595' (say NO if built into your kernel)? (YES/no):
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/sensors/sis5595.o: init_module: No
such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/sensors/sis5595.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/sensors/sis5595.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/sensors/sis5595.o: insmod
i2c-sis5595 failed
Loading failed ()... skipping.
Any ideas ?
Cheers,
Adam.

I'd definitely go for the GF2MX, but you'll have to install the
(proprietary) drivers from nVidia to get it up and running with 3D accel.
See ftp://ftp1.detonator.nvidia.com/pub/drivers/english/XFree86_40/1.0-
1251/
These will give good framerates with openGL under Linux.
However, do read the HOWTO:

I haven't tried it myself, but I did notice when installing Mandrake 8
that it comes with a service called oki4drv, which according to the man
page will work with the Okipage 4w.
I couldn't find any details of where to get it, but I would thing
www.rpmfind.net , freshmeat.net or google.com would be good places to
search.
Hope this helps,

I'm successfully using a Visor with MD8, it sounds like the first thing
you need to do is either set the port that jpilot or gpilotd uses to be
/dev/ttyUSB1 (or create a link : ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/visor (or
/dev/pilot)). I've had success with both jpilot and gpilotd (the
pilot-applet under Gnome) but failed to get kpilot working. Jpilot is an
all in one solution so may be your best bet.
Hope that helps,
Alex

I ran into the same issue when I upgraded from 6.2 to RH 7.0. The
Sourceforge site that maintains the Aureal drivers had a thread about the
issue. The solution was to install the 7.0 kernel source from the install
CD-ROM. RH does not load the source by default and the module needs some
of the source to compile correctly.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Mustek 1200 CU does not work (USB)
Date: Mon, 28 May 2001 16:02:46 +0200
Hi!
After I had verified in the net that it should work, I purchased a
Mustek 1200CU Plus and installed it according to the hints in the net
(SANE backend from Mustek).
But if I enter
scanimage -L
I get
entering sane_get_devices.
as output and the following entry in /var/log/messages:
May 22 21:02:39 ruben kernel: scanner.c: open_scanner(0): Unable to
access minor data
Regarding to this message, I got the hint to set "MPS Version Control
for OS" to "1.1" in the BIOS.
Unfortunately, my AMI BIOS does not have such an option.
Any ideas what to do?!

Hi everybody,
I've bought a Logitech iFeel Mouse USB (not a MouseMan).
I've only found FAQs for the MouseMan model and couldn't manage to make my

Does anyone has already managed to configure this mouse ?

Hello,
We'll implement around 30 Linux boxes in our company and I'd like if a small
software to make raw diskcopy exists ? I tried with dd, which works fine, but
too slowly (around 3 hours and a half to copy a 9 Gb IDE drive). All PCs are
shipped with ULTRA-ATA 66 disk drives. Did I do something wrong with dd or
is it really that slow ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hmm, OK. What if I got it from an FTP install?
Either way, uhm, er, how exactly does one install the source? I have had
very bad luck trying to install packages post installation....
Thanks for any advice. =)

Subject: Sizzeling sound from power supply
Date: 28 May 2001 15:01:32 GMT
Hi,
i'm using a Compaq Presario 5536 (700 Mhz P3)
and I have experienced a strange problem:
When running the machine under Suse 7.1 I
get a strange sizzeling sound from the
power supply almost if there is something about
to be fried inside. There is however no
smell and the machine still runs stable for
hours. Running the same piece of hardware
under Windows there is no such sound - even
when changing screen resolutions and trying out
different software packages.
So my question: Does Suse 7.1 put the power
supply under higher stress than windows ???
Is this behaviour caused by the power
management features of Linux ? Is this
a known problem ?
Thanks in advance

Need some advice from experienced people.
I have an icky 486DX-66 with 16MB RAM and 2GB HD 640x480 laptop.
I have RedHat 5.0, RH 6.2, and RH 7.1 and Mandrake 6.0.
What would be a better package for this thing? Latest and greatest, like
with Windows, is not always a good idea. So I'm leaning toward RH 6.2. But
if I can't get Xwindows to run anyway, the is there any problem with using
RH 7.1?
Speaking of Xwindows, think any desktop will work? I know Gnome and KDE are
right out (darn it), but what about one of the lesser memory intensive
desktops?
Thanks for any advice!!
