Well, thanks for everybody who replied. The command
"loadlin vmlinux.vml root=/dev/hdc5 mem=256M" did the trick.
The problem was that after I loaded it with this scheme, it hanged my
computer for a while. After I rebooted, I discovered that I have lots of
corrupt configuration files, so I had to re-install Linux.
When I boot from the diskette, Linux reports that I have 255M of RAM rather
than 256M. So maybe the extra Meg caused it some troubles.
In any case, now I'll try to run it with mem=240M, and see if everything is
OK. 16M of RAM will not make such a difference. (Even though I used to run
Linux with that amount of RAM)
