ok. it might mean the client is trying to do something else _before_
connecting to the mail/pop/imap/telnet server, and fails with that.

on the other hand - this contradicts what you asid, about tcpdump showing
that a tcp connection _is_ established - if its established, then you must
also see it with 'netstat -n'. try to think of an explanation, or else, of
what you've been doing wrong when checking things, or when reporting them.

what about this syslog issue? did you try checking it? it should come
before you continue working on the mail problem, as a working syslogd
could help identifying the other problem.
