I looked at anthing even faintly resemmbling a log file unde /var/log. It there 
somewhere else?

It's intermittent and (so far) NOT reproducible. One thing I have done is 
implement mulix' suggestion of running under strace. (Small mod to .xinitrc.)
But now that the doctor is here the patient feels good ... the system has been 
running without a hitch since last Thursday evening!

During this week, time permitting, I'll shift this business to another less
