Surprise is the right word for it: It is called "smoke-screen".
That enables them to claim they have "Unix version"....
Which Unix? Which Unix Version? What browser features are supported?
When you'll get End-Of-Life for that version? Will they support your
Unix vendor next version?
No need to answer. Microsoft will answer these types of questions one
by one, when it is best for them (and worst for you...)
This strategy enables them to shove their proprietary technology (e.g:
ActiveX, code-red :-) into the infrastructure of corporate
intra-nets:
"You should use our modern web-technology for the employees new
pizza ordering system. Don't worry, we support even those aging
legacy 'Unix' systems"
..... Later on....
"Ummmm, it doesn't work with Solaris-9 ? well we cannot be
expected to support every version of those old systems,
Especially while we dedicate ourselves to innovation.
But I can show you how fantastically it works with Windows-YP"
BTW: for those looking to have MS-IE for Linux. I wait for it
more than you, but for a different reason altogether.
MS would release such a product ONLY WHEN Linux start eating
a significant portion of their desktop market.....
(in this context, even 15-20% is significant).
