I am not sure about putting PC RAM in Alpha, but the 72Pin SIMMs of a 6
years old AlphaServer worked just fine in a PC. Same with the SIMMs of
a 7 years old Indy (but they were only 8MB, so I left them in the Indy).

BTW, I heard you might be lucky at Compaq itself - try to ask for an old
Alpha, and you might get one for a low price (or free?). I think you have
even higher chances to get a VAX, which doesn't run Linux very well, but
does run many other interesting OSes (including, without limitation,
VMS, for which you will get a license for free, and NetBSD, which is
freeware (in both senses)).
