  Are you sure you need /etc/gateways for your setup? I believe this
file is used when there are many routes to choose from, for routed or
similar route decisions. I would restore this file to its original form
and look for the problem elsewhere. 
  Can you ping the ADSL gateway? What is the output of ifconfig and
route?
