That's why PowerPoint was invented (I can't think of a presentation which would require more than some text and a few illustrations, why on Earth should the next slide morph in and the lines of text fall from the sky into the frame? And it's not Microsoft's fault. These things existed in HyperCard 12 years ago).
Actually, I made presentations where a single slide could have as much as 12 mouse clicks changing the same slide (try to explain the process of a stack pointer during format string exploit, and you find you need to visualize stuff). These things actually have a use (and OpenOffice, for some strange reason, wouldn't let me do some of them).
I agree that flagrant use of effects is bad, but having the buffer appear on the stack using a wipe in the direction the buffer is filled, especially when some of the wipes are in opposite directions, is a very useful tool (even if not very visible).
