Yes, I know that - but I want to old behaviour where I could set my kdb layout 
to 'il' and then use alt-shift (like in windows) to type in english - can't 
spare a hand to go to the mouse everytime I want to type a single letter in 
english :-)

The solution Tzafrir offered is better - disable the KDE keyboard layout 
support, and modify XF86Config to use both 'us' and 'il'.

That's really weird - I never heard that, usually its either all the fonts are 
ok or none are shown properly. never heard about a half-half situation. maybe 
you need to check your installed fonts, they may be corrupted.
