Or just don't use a switcher and use a keyboard combination to switch
the mode.
For example, my XF86Config-4 says:
Option "XkbModel" "microsoftpro"
Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru,il"
Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
(that's for an US-Russian-Israeli configuration, rotating between the
modes with left/right Alt-Shift)

The right way is to read the xfree86.xml file
(/etc/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86.xml). It's a new file which replaces the
old xfree86.lst. See the <model> items. The <name> is what you should
use for the XkbModel option.
(yes, it's an XML file but its quite readable)
