  Consider using either ffmpeg or mencoder for capture and encoding of the
video. The problem with codecs is not open/closed source but patent issues.
I think you can put 3 hours of MPEG1 video on a VCD (download vcdimager) and
then you get the extra bonus of the CD being playable on most home DVD
players.

  As you are low on disk space, you will have to do the encoding in parts,
or in real-time (which is not recommended). Use mencoder to create an
uncompressed avi file and then compress it with another pass of mencoder.
