I think a much better format would have been to recruite people from Israel with intimate knowledge of running open source projects. Me for Wine, Muli for the kernel, Nadav for hspell, Shlomi for freecel solver, etc. Agree with those people that they will be tutors for the students for the summer course duration. Let the students fit into this outfit, and join the development effort under the same conditions a real life bazar developer works. Specify a given task from the project's ToDo list to perform, and that's what they are going to be graded on. As usual - anything goes. They are allowed to ask for help, solicit solutions, everything a real FOSS programmer does. At the end of the semester, either the teacher himself joins searches the mailing list archives for the project and grade them, or he asks the Israeli rep. to grade the student (or both).
As a fallback for students who don't want to join an existing project, the current scheme may be chosen. The "objectives", "goals", and "design" stages, however, will be waved for those students who choose to join an existing project.
Alexander - what say you? Do you think you could let a few interested parties (such as myself, as I'm sure Nadav) come to the first meeting of the session and present our projects, try to recruit helpers? Do you think the teacher will go for such a scheme?
I'm willing to come over for a one on one talk with him, work out the fine details.
If practical, this sounds to me like a much better format than the original one. An added advantage is getting the students to meet people actually seriously involved in FS/OS development/community.
